And he stood<MH5975> by the conduit<MH8585a> of the upper<MH5945a> pool<MH1295> on the road<MH4546> to the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>fuller’s<MH3526> field<MH7704>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/36-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>Then Eliakim<MH471> the son<MH1121> of Hilkiah<MH2518>, who<MH834> was over<MH5921> the household<MH1004>, and Shebna<MH7644> the scribe<MH5613b>, and Joah<MH3098> the son<MH1121> of Asaph<MH623>, the secretary<MH4206c>, went<MH3318> out<MH3318> to him. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/36-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>And Rabshakeh<MH7262> said<MH559> to them, “Say<MH559> now<MH4994> to Hezekiah<MH2396>, ‘This<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> the great<MH1419> king<MH4428>, the king<MH4428> of Assyria<MH804b> says<MH559>: “What<MH4100> is this<MH2088> confidence<MH986> that you have<MH982>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/36-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>I say<MH559>, ‘Your plan<MH6098> and strength<MH1369> for the war<MH4421> are only<MH389> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>empty<MH8193> words<MH1697>.’ Now<MH6258> on whom<MH4310> have you relied<MH982>, that you have revolted<MH4775> against me? <span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/36-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>Behold<MH2009>, you have relied<MH982> on the staff<MH4938b> of this<MH2088> broken<MH7533> reed<MH7070>, on Egypt<MH4714>, on which<MH834> if a man<MH376> leans<MH5564>, it will go<MH935> into his <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>hand<MH3709> and pierce<MH5344a> it. So<MH3651> is Pharaoh<MH6547> king<MH4428> of Egypt<MH4714> to all<MH3605> who rely<MH982> on him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/36-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>But if<MH3588> you say<MH559> to me, ‘We trust<MH982> in the LORD<MH3068> our God<MH430>,’ is it not He whose<MH834> high<MH1116> places<MH1116> and whose altars<MH4196> Hezekiah<MH2396> has taken<MH5493> away<MH5493> and has said<MH559> to Judah<MH3063> and to Jerusalem<MH3389>, ‘You shall worship<MH2331c> before<MH6440> this<MH2088> altar<MH4196>’? <span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/36-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Now<MH6258> then, come<MH4994> make<MH6148> a<MH6148> wager<MH6148> with my master<MH113> the king<MH4428> of Assyria<MH804b>: I will give<MH5414> you two thousand<MH505> horses<MH5483b>, if<MH518> you are<MH3201> able<MH3201> on your part to put<MH5414> riders<MH7392> on them! <span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/36-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>How<MH349> then can you <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>drive<MH7725, 6440> back<MH7725> <i>even</i> one<MH259> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>official<MH6346> of the least<MH6996a> of my master’s<MH113> servants<MH5650> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>rely<MH982> on Egypt<MH4714> for chariots<MH7393> and horsemen<MH6571b>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/36-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>And have I now<MH6258> come<MH5927> up<MH5927> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>without<MH1107> the LORD’S<MH3068> approval against<MH5921> this<MH2088> land<MH776> to destroy<MH7843> it? The LORD<MH3068> said<MH559> to me, ‘Go<MH5927> up<MH5927> against<MH413> this<MH2088> land<MH776> and destroy<MH7843> it.’”’” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/36-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Then Eliakim<MH471>, Shebna<MH7644>, and Joah<MH3098> said<MH559> to Rabshakeh<MH7262>, “Please<MH4994> speak<MH1696> to your servants<MH5650> in Aramaic<MH762>, for we <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>understand<MH8085> <i>it;</i> and do not speak<MH1696> to us in <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>Judean<MH3066> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>so that the people<MH5971a> who<MH834> are on the wall<MH2346> hear<MH241> <i>you.</i>” <span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/36-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>But Rabshakeh<MH7262> said<MH559>, “Has my master<MH113> sent<MH7971> me <i>only</i> to your master<MH113> and to you to speak<MH1696> these<MH428> words<MH1697>, <i>and</i> not to the men<MH376> who sit<MH3427> on the wall<MH2346>, <i>doomed</i> to eat<MH398> their own dung<MH2716> and drink<MH8354> their own urine<MH7890> with you?” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/36-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Then Rabshakeh<MH7262> stood<MH5975> and called<MH7121> out<MH7121> with a loud<MH1419> voice<MH6963> in Judean<MH3066> and said<MH559>, “Hear<MH8085> the words<MH1697> of the great<MH1419> king<MH4428>, the king<MH4428> of Assyria<MH804b>! <span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/36-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>This<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> the king<MH4428> says<MH559>: ‘Do not let Hezekiah<MH2396> deceive<MH5378> you, for he will not be<MH3201> able<MH3201> to save<MH5337> you; <span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/36-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>and do not let Hezekiah<MH2396> lead you to rely<MH982> on the LORD<MH3068>, saying<MH559>, “The LORD<MH3068> will certainly<MH5337> save<MH5337> us. This<MH2088> city<MH5892b> will not be handed<MH5414, 3027> over<MH5414> to the king<MH4428> of Assyria<MH804b>!” <span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/36-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>Do not listen<MH8085> to Hezekiah<MH2396>,’ for this<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> the king<MH4428> of Assyria<MH804b> says<MH559>: ‘<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>Surrender<MH6213a, 1293> to me and come<MH3318> out<MH3318> to me, and eat<MH398>, each<MH376> one<MH376>, of his vine<MH1612> and each<MH376> of his fig<MH8384> tree<MH8384>, and each<MH376> drink<MH8354> of the waters<MH4325> of his own cistern<MH953a>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/36-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>until<MH5704> I come<MH935> and take<MH3947> you away to a land<MH776> like your own land<MH776>, a land<MH776> of grain<MH1715> and new<MH8492> wine<MH8492>, a land<MH776> of bread<MH3899> and vineyards<MH3754>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/36-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span><i>Beware</i> that Hezekiah<MH2396> does not mislead<MH5496> you, saying<MH559>, “The LORD<MH3068> will save<MH5337> us.” Has any<MH376> one<MH376> of the gods<MH430> of the nations<MH1471> saved<MH5337> his land<MH776> from the hand<MH3027> of the king<MH4428> of Assyria<MH804b>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/36-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>Where<MH346> are the gods<MH430> of Hamath<MH2574> and Arpad<MH774>? Where<MH346> are the gods<MH430> of Sepharvaim<MH5617>?
