<span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> Pilate<MG4091> asked<MG2065> Him, saying<MG3004>, &#8220;<i>So</i> You are the King<MG935> of the Jews<MG2453>?&#8221; And He answered<MG611> him and said<MG5346>, &#8220;<i>It is as</i> you say<MG3004>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>But Pilate<MG4091> said<MG3004> to the chief<MG749> priests<MG749> and the crowds<MG3793>, &#8220;I find<MG2147> no<MG3762> grounds<MG159a> for<MG159a> charges<MG159a> in <i>the case of</i> this<MG3778> man<MG444>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>But they kept on insisting<MG2001>, saying<MG3004>, &#8220;He is stirring<MG383> up<MG383> the people<MG2992>, teaching<MG1321> all<MG3650> over<MG2596> Judea<MG2449>, starting<MG757> from Galilee<MG1056>, as<MG2193> far<MG2193> as<MG2193> this<MG5602> place<MG5602>!&#8221; <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> when Pilate<MG4091> heard<MG191> <i>this,</i> he asked<MG1905> whether<MG1487> the man<MG444> was a Galilean<MG1057>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>And when he learned<MG1921> that He belonged<MG1510, 1537> to Herod&#8217;s<MG2264> jurisdiction<MG1849>, he sent<MG375a> Him to Herod<MG2264>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>since he also<MG2532> was in Jerusalem<MG2414> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>at this<MG3778> time<MG2250>. <p class="hdg">Jesus before Herod</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> Herod<MG2264> was overjoyed<MG3029, 5463> when he saw<MG3708> Jesus<MG2424>; for he had<MG1510> wanted<MG2309> to see<MG3708> Him for a long<MG2425> time<MG5550>, because<MG1223> he had been hearing<MG191> about<MG4012> Him and was hoping<MG1679> to see<MG3708> some<MG5100> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>sign<MG4592> performed<MG1096> by Him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>And he questioned<MG1905> Him <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>at some<MG2425> length<MG3056, 2425>; but He offered<MG611> him no<MG3762> answer<MG611> at<MG3762> all<MG3762>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>Now the chief<MG749> priests<MG749> and the scribes<MG1122> stood<MG2476> <i>there,</i> vehemently<MG2159> charging<MG2723> Him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>And Herod<MG2264>, together<MG4862> with his soldiers<MG4753>, treated<MG1848> Him with<MG1848> contempt<MG1848> and mocked<MG1702> Him, dressing<MG4016> Him in a brightly<MG2986> shining<MG2986> robe<MG2066>, and sent<MG375a> Him back<MG375a> to Pilate<MG4091>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>And <i>so</i> Herod<MG2264> and Pilate<MG4091> became<MG1096> friends<MG5384> with one<MG240> another<MG240> that very<MG846> day<MG2250>; for previously<MG4391>, they had been<MG4391, 1510> enemies<MG2189b> toward<MG4314> each<MG848> other<MG848>. <p class="hdg">Pilate Seeks Jesus&#8217; Release</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> Pilate<MG4091> summoned<MG4779> to himself the chief<MG749> priests<MG749>, the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>rulers<MG758>, and the people<MG2992>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>and he said<MG3004> to them, &#8220;You brought<MG4374> this<MG3778> man<MG444> to me on<MG5613> the<MG5613> ground<MG5613> that<MG5613> he is inciting<MG654> the people<MG2992> to revolt<MG654>; and behold<MG2400>, after examining<MG350> <i>Him</i> before<MG1799> you, I have found<MG2147> no<MG3762> basis<MG159a> at<MG3762> all<MG3762> in <i>the case of</i> this<MG3778> man<MG444> for the charges<MG2723> which<MG3739> you are bringing<MG2723> against<MG2596> Him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>No<MG235>, nor<MG3761> has Herod<MG2264>, for he sent<MG375a> Him back<MG375a> to us; and behold<MG2400>, nothing<MG3762> deserving<MG514> death<MG2288> has been<MG1510> done<MG4238> by Him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>Therefore<MG3767> I will <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>punish<MG3811> Him and release<MG630> Him.&#8221; 17[<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>Now<MG1161> he was obligated<MG2192, 318> to release<MG630> to them at the feast<MG1859> one<MG1520> <i>prisoner.</i>] <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>But they cried<MG349> out<MG349> all<MG3826> together<MG3826>, saying<MG3004>, &#8220;Away<MG142> with this<MG3778> man<MG3778>, and release<MG630> to us Barabbas<MG912>!&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>(<i>He was</i> one<MG3748> who<MG3748> had been thrown<MG906> into prison<MG5438> for a revolt<MG4714b> that took<MG1096> place<MG1096> in the city<MG4172>, and for murder<MG5408>.) <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>But Pilate<MG4091>, wanting<MG2309> to release<MG630> Jesus<MG2424>, addressed<MG4377> them again<MG3825>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>but they kept on crying<MG2019> out<MG2019>, saying<MG3004>, &#8220;Crucify<MG4717>, crucify<MG4717> Him!&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>And he said<MG3004> to them a third<MG5154> time<MG5154>, &#8220;Why<MG1063>, what<MG5101> has this<MG3778> man<MG3778> done<MG4160> wrong<MG2556>? I have found<MG2147> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>in His case no<MG3762> grounds<MG159a> for <i>a sentence of</i> death<MG2288>; therefore<MG3767> I will <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>punish<MG3811> Him and release<MG630> Him.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>But they were insistent<MG1945>, with loud<MG3173> voices<MG5456>, demanding<MG154> that He be crucified<MG4717>. And their voices<MG5456> <i>began</i> to prevail<MG2729>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>And <i>so</i> Pilate<MG4091> decided<MG1948> to have their demand<MG155> carried<MG1096> out<MG1096>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>And he released<MG630> the man<MG3588> for whom<MG3739> they were asking<MG154>, who had been thrown<MG906> into prison<MG5438> for a revolt<MG4714b> and murder<MG5408>; but he handed<MG3860> Jesus<MG2424> over<MG3860> to their will<MG2307>. <p class="hdg">Simon Carries the Cross</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>And when<MG5613> they led<MG520> Him away<MG520>, they seized<MG1949> a man<MG5100>, Simon<MG4613> of<MG2956> Cyrene<MG2956>, as he was coming<MG2064> in from the country<MG68>, and placed<MG2007> on<MG2007> him the cross<MG4716> to carry<MG5342> behind<MG3693> Jesus<MG2424>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> following<MG190> Him was a large<MG4183> crowd<MG4128> of the people<MG2992>, and of women<MG1135> who<MG3739> were <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>mourning<MG2875> and grieving<MG2354> for Him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>But Jesus<MG2424> turned<MG4762> to them and said<MG3004>, &#8220;Daughters<MG2364> of Jerusalem<MG2419>, stop<MG3361> weeping<MG2799> for Me, but weep<MG2799> for yourselves<MG1438> and for your children<MG5043>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>For behold<MG2400>, days<MG2250> are coming<MG2064> when<MG1722, 3739> they will say<MG3004>, &#8216;Blessed<MG3107> are those<MG3588> who cannot<MG4723> bear<MG4723>, and the wombs<MG2836> that have not given<MG1080> birth<MG1080>, and the breasts<MG3149> that have not nursed<MG5142>.&#8217; <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>Then<MG5119> they will begin<MG757> TO SAY<MG3004> TO THE MOUNTAINS<MG3735>, &#8216;FALL<MG4098> ON US,&#8217; AND TO THE HILLS<MG1015>, &#8216;COVER<MG2572> US.&#8217; <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>For if<MG1487> they do<MG4160> these<MG3778> things<MG3778> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>when<MG1722> the tree<MG3586> is green<MG5200>, what<MG5101> will happen<MG1096> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>when<MG1722> it is dry<MG3584>?&#8221; <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> two<MG1417> others<MG2087>, who were criminals<MG2557>, were also<MG2532> being led<MG71> away<MG71> to be put<MG337> to<MG337> death<MG337> with Him. <p class="hdg">The Crucifixion</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>And when<MG3753> they came<MG2064> to the place<MG5117> called<MG2564> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>The Skull<MG2898>, there<MG1563> they crucified<MG4717> Him and the criminals<MG2557>, one<MG3739> on the right<MG1188> and the other<MG3739> on the left<MG710>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>[<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>But Jesus<MG2424> was saying<MG3004>, &#8220;Father<MG3962>, forgive<MG863> them; for they do not know<MG3609a> what<MG5101> they are doing<MG4160>.&#8221;] And they cast<MG906> lots<MG2819>, dividing<MG1266> His garments<MG2440> among<MG1266> themselves. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>And the people<MG2992> stood<MG2476> by, watching<MG2334>. And even<MG2532> the rulers<MG758> were sneering<MG1592> at Him, saying<MG3004>, &#8220;He saved<MG4982> others<MG243>; let Him save<MG4982> Himself<MG1438> if<MG1487> this<MG3778> is the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>Christ<MG5547> of God<MG2316>, His Chosen<MG1588> One<MG1588>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>The soldiers<MG4757> also<MG2532> ridiculed<MG1702> Him, coming<MG4334> up<MG4334> to Him, offering<MG4374> Him sour<MG3690> wine<MG3690>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>and saying<MG3004>, &#8220;If<MG1487> You are the King<MG935> of the Jews<MG2453>, save<MG4982> Yourself<MG4572>!&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> there was also<MG2532> an inscription<MG1923> above<MG1909> Him, &#8220;THIS<MG3778> IS THE KING<MG935> OF THE JEWS<MG2453>.&#8221; <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-39.htm"><b>39</b></a></span>One<MG1520> of the criminals<MG2557> who were hanged<MG2910> <i>there</i> was <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>hurling<MG987> abuse<MG987> at Him, saying<MG3004>, &#8220;Are You not the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[r]</a></span>Christ<MG5547>? Save<MG4982> Yourself<MG4572> and us!&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-40.htm"><b>40</b></a></span>But the other<MG2087> responded<MG611>, and rebuking<MG2008> him, said<MG5346>, &#8220;Do you not even<MG3761> fear<MG5399> God<MG2316>, since<MG3754> you are under<MG1722> the same<MG846> sentence<MG2917> of<MG2917> condemnation<MG2917>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-41.htm"><b>41</b></a></span>And we indeed<MG3303a> <i>are suffering</i> justly<MG1346>, for we are receiving<MG618> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[s]</a></span>what<MG3739> we deserve<MG514> for our crimes<MG3739, 4238>; but this<MG3778> man<MG3778> has done<MG4238> nothing<MG3762> wrong<MG824>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-42.htm"><b>42</b></a></span>And he was saying<MG3004>, &#8220;Jesus<MG2424>, remember<MG3403> me when<MG3752> You come<MG2064> into Your kingdom<MG932>!&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-43.htm"><b>43</b></a></span>And He said<MG3004> to him, &#8220;Truly<MG281> I say<MG3004> to you, today<MG4594> you will be with Me in Paradise<MG3857>.&#8221; <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-44.htm"><b>44</b></a></span>It was now<MG2235> about<MG5616> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[t]</a></span>the sixth<MG1623> hour<MG5610>, and darkness<MG4655> came<MG1096> over<MG1909> the entire<MG3650> land<MG1093> until<MG2193> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[u]</a></span>the ninth<MG1729a> hour<MG5610>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-45.htm"><b>45</b></a></span><span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[v]</a></span>because the sun<MG2246> stopped<MG1587> shining<MG1587>; and the veil<MG2665> of the temple<MG3485> was torn<MG4977> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[w]</a></span>in two<MG3319>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-46.htm"><b>46</b></a></span>And Jesus<MG2424>, crying<MG5455> out<MG5455> with a loud<MG3173> voice<MG5456>, said<MG3004>, &#8220;Father<MG3962>, INTO YOUR HANDS<MG5495> I ENTRUST<MG3908> MY SPIRIT<MG4151>.&#8221; And having said<MG3004> this<MG3778>, He <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[x]</a></span>died<MG1606>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-47.htm"><b>47</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> when the centurion<MG1543> saw<MG3708> what had happened<MG1096>, he <i>began</i> praising<MG1392> God<MG2316>, saying<MG3004>, &#8220;This<MG3778> man<MG444> was in fact<MG3689> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[y]</a></span>innocent<MG1342>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-48.htm"><b>48</b></a></span>And all<MG3956> the crowds<MG3793> who came<MG4836> together<MG4836> for this<MG3778> spectacle<MG2335>, after watching<MG2334> what had happened<MG1096>, <i>began</i> to return<MG5290> <i>home,</i> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[z]</a></span>beating<MG5180> their chests<MG4738>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-49.htm"><b>49</b></a></span>And all<MG3956> His acquaintances<MG1110> and the women<MG1135> who accompanied<MG4870> Him from Galilee<MG1056> were standing<MG2476> at a distance<MG3113>, seeing<MG3708> these<MG3778> things<MG3778>. <p class="hdg">Jesus Is Buried</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-50.htm"><b>50</b></a></span>And a man<MG435> named<MG3686> Joseph<MG2501>, who was a member<MG1010> of<MG1010> the<MG1010> Council<MG1010>, a good<MG18> and righteous<MG1342> man<MG435> <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-51.htm"><b>51</b></a></span>(he had not consented<MG4784> to their plan<MG1012> and action<MG4234>), <i>a man</i> from Arimathea<MG707>, a city<MG4172> of the Jews<MG2453>, who<MG3739> was waiting<MG4327> for the kingdom<MG932> of God<MG2316>&#8212;
