They give us a glimpse into earliest Christian worship and Christian understandings of the recent advent of the Messiah. As a matter of genre, they are easily discussed as liturgical texts, poetry, or musical lyrics. This examination reveals that the Odes are filled with themes of apocalyptic literature, far beyond the extent hitherto recognized. These apocalyptic themes situate the Odes in earliest Christian literature, revealing ties to the Johannine corpus, particularly to the Revelation, to “Two Ways” catechetical literature, and to merkabah mysticism. In the Odes, there is revealed a need for a wider understanding of apocalyptic literature. A second group equates religious experience with encounters of the Holy Spirit. Thirdly, historical Jesus studies investigates historical dimensions of the religious experience described in the Gospels. However, data show that this natural progression is sometimes frustrated; and therefore, a basic premise of this thesis is that God does not leave his disciples to their own devices but encourages transformation and provides the means for its development. What is more, this work emphasizes that Christian disciples are, in the new birth, spiritually inclined to God’s call and provision for transformation.The direction of this work is rooted in the two greatest commandments to love God and to love man (Matthew 22:36-39). It is in obedience to Jesus’ commission to make disciples (Matthew 28:19)—equipping them for the work of ministry, building the church, and finishing well the race set before them—to which this present work is directed. Spiritual transformation is the God-intended development of Christians for kingdom living in love. In support, this work examines the evidences for Christian spiritual transformation and kingdom living. The research and observations of this study reveal a great need within the church for life-renewal through spiritual transformation, therefore, the need and emphasis of this thesis. The present work argues that Christian spiritual transformation involves knowing oneself honestly, openly, and truthfully before the living God. And therefore, it argues that practices aimed at spiritual transformation facilitate intimacy and obedience to God through a spiritual walk. Spiritual transformation is discussed as a development of the whole person. Although this research employs a historico-grammatical hermeneutic (interpretation), related experiential outcomes are heavily weighted. Finally, this work argues for a life that is best lived in touching the lives of others and the world in general, by and with the loving power of God, and what that might look like (1 Corinthians 2:13; 14:37; 2 Corinthians 3:18; Galatians 5:25; Ephesians 2:22). Exploration of the role of Christian prophets in mediating and creating Jesus tradition flourished in the early 1980’s following the work of Bultmann, Käsemann, Neugebauer, Boring and Aune. A new interest in Jewish and Christian prophecy has followed the exploration of apocalyptic as a separate genre from eschatology, and the rediscovery of mystical ascent traditions in the work of Rowland, John J. Collins, VanderKam and Schäfer. Neither of these research trajectories has satisfactorily explained the oral performative aspects of such prophetic tradition, nor how it relates to apocalyptic in literary form. Recently a number of scholars began to read the Gospel in terms of its Spirituality and specifically its mystical nature. This trend reflects the increasing attention being paid to Biblical Spirituality and contemporary Hermeneutics that stressed that a Biblical text is not only informative in nature, but also transformative. Specialists like Sandra Schneiders have already read parts of John’s Gospel convincingly in this way, whilst Kees Waaijman published major work on the mystical interpretation of Biblical texts. These new and now established insights, as well as the research on Biblical mysticism by other leading scholars like Meeks and Dunn have not yet been applied to John 15. The groundbreaking work by Kanagaraj and DeConick are alos further explored. The text of John 15 contains mystical imagery and contents which contribute decisively to the understanding of the mystical nature of John’s Gospel. Scholars have primarily tended to resolve the issue by establishing its independence from or dependence upon the Synoptic Gospels. Recently, however, there have been signs that new methods may be opening up new vistas with respect to the dating issue. To name but a few, the diverse scholarship of Nicholas Perrin, April DeConick, and Risto Uro has been devoted to establishing new and creative methods precisely with respect to this problem. This essay seeks to use an alternative methodology whereby we examine a particular logion, in this case logion 53 on circumcision, and attempt to plot its particular teaching on an early Christian trajectory. After briefly surveying a few alternative methods for dating the Gospel of Thomas, we examine logion 53 within the Gospel of Thomas and suggest that its teaching on circumcision fits well within the larger Thomasine context, and then compare it with other early Christian texts on circumcision. However, it remains an evolutionary, multi-stage model and it is historically problematic. He overstates the case for Jewish opposition to Christ-devotion, minimises the ethical particularity of earliest Christianity and the model suffers some serious internal tensions. His claim that religious experiences gave the decisive impetus to Christ-devotion does not reckon adequately with the implications of social-science study, is not supported by the primary texts and conflicts with the important evidence that visionary and mystical practices were frowned upon in some early Christian quarters. Hurtado presents his work as theologically disinterested.
