We argue that the MJC's positioning may be characterised as premised on a 'loyalist-accommodationist' relation to power, in which the comforts and religious freedoms of a religious minority are seen as best ensured by accommodation with the party in power, the African National Congress (ANC). This strategy is closely linked to the interests of the middle-class elite, from which the elite among the 'ulama' is largely recruited. We demonstrate that this loyalist-accommodationist stance has survived the ideological and discursive shifts within the ANC over the course of the post-apartheid era, and attempt to explain why a politics of direct challenge to political power from the MJC is unlikely in the 'new South Africa', in spite of the 'ulama's' ambivalence with regard to societal secularisation. 1 On 25 June 2008 Mawlana Ighsaan Hendricks, the President of the largest and most influential 'ulama' organisation (organisation of Muslim religious leaders) in South Africa's Western Cape province, the Muslim Judicial Council (MJC), asserted after a meeting with the African National Congress's (ANC) President, Jacob Zuma, that 'MJC members would welcome Zuma as president of our country'. 2 In so doing, the leader of a religious body that had more or less consistently defined itself as apolitical and concerned largely with religious matters throughout the period of apartheid, seemed to indicate that the MJC would tie its flag to the ANC mast – even if its own members and Muslim constituencies in the Western Cape remained sharply divided over such a stance. At a public seminar in Athlone in Cape Town, organised by the Islamic Peace University of South Africa (IPSA) on 21 September 2008, Hendricks explained that the meeting with Zuma gave the MJC the opportunity to raise crucial matters concerning the political direction of the country, to introduce him to Islam, and to explain the history and the contributions of Muslims in South Africa. Hendricks confirmed that in spite of its statement of support for Zuma, the MJC as such did not have a position of support for any political party. The MJC had stopped short of openly endorsing the ANC prior to the first democratic elections in 1994 – but now its President seemed to endorse the party's controversial new presidential candidate in the aftermath of the ANC's Polokwane Conference 1 We base this article on material drawn from South African media and academic literature, as well as from long-standing personal engagement in empirical research on Cape Muslims.
@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"Person
Aslam among Muslim religious leaders in the Western Cape of South Africa, organised in the Muslim Judicial Council (MJC), have positioned themselves with regard to political power in the post-apartheid era.
["work"]; window.loswp.workCoauthors = [1072318,3413240]; window.loswp.locale = "en"; window.loswp.countryCode = "SG"; window.loswp.cwvAbTestBucket = ""; window.loswp.designVariant = "ds_vanilla"; window.loswp.fullPageMobileSutdModalVariant = "control"; window.loswp.useOptimizedScribd4genScript = false; window.loswp.appleClientId = 'edu.academia.applesignon';

<button class="ds-work-cover--clickable js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal=
">
download
Download Free PDF

Download Free PDF

Ambiguous Accommodation: Cape Muslims and Post-Apartheid Politics

Aslam FataarSindre Bangstad

This article explores how the elite among Muslim religious leaders in the Western Cape of South Africa, organised in the Muslim Judicial Council (MJC), have positioned themselves with regard to political power in the post-apartheid era. During the late 1980s and early 1990s, the interreligious movement played a significant role in the anti-apartheid struggle via the South African Chapter of the World Conference of Religions for Peace. Since the onset of a non-racial and democratic dispensation in 1994, the interreligious movement forms an integral part of South Africa's burgeoning civil society, attempting to hold the post-apartheid government accountable for its political and moral mandate. This article explores the development of South Africa's interreligious movement with special reference to the role of the Muslim community. It argues that, relative to its small size, the local Muslim community has played a disproportionate role in shaping the history and trajectory of the South African interreligious solidarity movement during the anti-apartheid struggle (1948-1994) and in the contemporary democratic period (1994-2023).

downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

<button class="ds2-5-button js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal=
">See full PDF<button class="ds2-5-button ds2-5-button--secondary js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal=
">downloadDownload PDF

Loading Preview

Sorry, preview is currently unavailable.
