Conjectural histories of woman do not differ from those of man on this issue. In fact, the congruence between the two histories is nearly complete at every point. Where they vary is in the degree of attention and detail which the relation between the sexes receives, and most importantly, in the extent of the approval or disapproval conferred by their authors on the progress of civilization. This book by Heidi Bostic constitutes a capital contribution to the ongoing rehabilitation of eighteenth-century French women writers. Through her particularly felicitous title, The Fiction of Enlightenment. Women of Reason in the French Eighteenth Century, Bostic posits the two premises of her study. First, the conventional definition of Enlightenment is, in fact, a fiction because it routinely excludes the contributions made by French "women of reason," intellectual women. Second, the works of fiction by these women writers actually offer additional insight into the Enlightenment and enhance our understanding of it. Analyzing mostly lesser-known texts and letters by the three leading women authors writing in French during the eighteenth century, Françoise de Graffigny, Marie Jeanne Riccoboni, and Isabelle de Charrière, Bostic argues persuasively that these authors claim reason for women and demonstrate in their works that women make crucial contributions to Enlightenment. Their writing thus illustrates how Enlightenment in its traditional definition is a fiction in need of revision. And although recent scholarship has recuperated these women's voices to some extent by publishing modern editions of their texts and analyzing them, Bostic issues a call for greater focus on these authors' "emergent feminist epistemologies" (215) specifically, so that their importance for contemporary feminist theory may be properly documented and assessed. Bostic makes her argument in four chapters-preceded by an introduction and followed by a conclusion-of which brief sections were previously published. The first chapter, entitled "Women, Enlightenment, and the Salic Law of Reason," addresses such issues as how women and reason were viewed in the eighteenth century, the nature of Enlightenment, and its relationship with literature. The remaining three chapters each cover a woman writer, organized in chronological order by their date of birth, beginning with Graffigny and proceeding to Riccoboni and then to Charrière. Their texts jointly span most of the eighteenth century. Although initially skeptical of Bostic's approach of using a single motif to interpret each author's diverse texts, this reviewer, in fact, found her discussion pertinent and enlightening. It begins by introducing this quarrel, here called the querelle des collèges, that involved more than 120 actors, just 3 of whom are known to be women. After presenting the quarrel texts written by Adelaïde d’Espinassy; Joséphine de Monbart; and Anne d’Aubourg de La Bove, comtesse de Miremont; the article explores why and how these women engaged in such a highly publicized,male-dominated quarrel. They intervened, the article shows, to redirect public interest in reforming boys’ schools toward reforming girls’ education. And they employed creative strategies to minimize the risk they ran, as women, by quarreling. By embedding their texts in other, existing disputes concerning women, and by engaging creatively with agonistic discursive practices usually reserved for men, these women destabilized this masculine dispute. It includes the letters and epistles of Margaret Cavendish, Anne Conway, Damaris Cudworth Masham, and Elizabeth Berkeley Burnet. These women were the correspondents of some of the best-known intellectuals of the period, including Constantijn Huygens, Walter Charleton, Henry More, Joseph Glanvill, John Locke, Jean Le Clerc, and Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz. Their epistolary exchanges range over a wide variety of philosophical subjects, from religion, moral theology, and ethics to epistemology, metaphysics, and natural philosophy. The volume includes a main introduction by the editor, which explains the significance of the letters and epistles with respect to early modern scholarship and the study of women philosophers. It is argued that this selection of texts demonstrates the intensely collaborative and gender-inclusive nature of philosophical discussion in this period. To help situate each woman’s thought in its historical-intellectual context, the volume also includes original introductory essays for each principal figure, showing how her correspondences contributed to the formation of her own views as well as those of her better-known male contemporaries. The text also provides detailed scholarly annotations, explaining obscure philosophical ideas and archaic words and phrases in the letters and epistles. Although she lived two centuries earlier, Louise d'Épinay's life (1726-1783) offers one of the clearest examples of what de Beauvoir meant. Madame d'Épinay's writings represent a woman in the process of defining herself-as an individual, an author, a parent and a teacher. In her Conversations d'Émilie (1774), a pedagogical work in the form of conversations between Émilie and her mother, the author uses dialogue as the means of teaching Émilie to exercise her faculties of reason and judgment. In doing so, she not only conveys basic principles of Enlightenment thought but also gives "voice" to herself and her child.
