The Jewish leaders, unable to execute capital punishment under Roman rule, handed Jesus over to Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor. This act signifies the rejection of Jesus by His own people and the involvement of the Gentiles in His crucifixion, highlighting the universal scope of His mission and sacrifice.
to be mocked
Mocking was a common form of humiliation for those condemned to death, especially in Roman culture. Jesus was ridiculed by Roman soldiers, who placed a crown of thorns on His head and a robe on His shoulders, sarcastically hailing Him as "King of the Jews." This fulfilled Old Testament prophecies, such as Isaiah 53:3, which speaks of the Messiah being despised and rejected.
and flogged
Flogging, or scourging, was a brutal Roman punishment involving a whip with multiple leather thongs, often embedded with metal or bone. This punishment was intended to weaken the victim before crucifixion. Jesus' flogging fulfills the prophecy in Isaiah 53:5, which states, "by His stripes we are healed," emphasizing the physical suffering He endured for humanity's redemption.
and crucified
Crucifixion was a Roman method of execution reserved for the most serious offenders, symbolizing extreme shame and suffering. Jesus' crucifixion was prophesied in Psalm 22:16, which describes the piercing of hands and feet. This method of death underscores the gravity of sin and the extent of Jesus' sacrifice, as He bore the curse of the law (Galatians 3:13) to bring salvation to all.
And on the third day
The reference to the third day is significant in Jewish tradition, often associated with divine intervention and new beginnings. Jesus' resurrection on the third day fulfills His own predictions (Matthew 16:21) and aligns with the sign of Jonah (Matthew 12:40), symbolizing victory over death and the inauguration of a new covenant.
He will be raised to life.
The resurrection is the cornerstone of Christian faith, affirming Jesus' divinity and the truth of His teachings. It fulfills Old Testament prophecies, such as Psalm 16:10, which speaks of God not allowing His Holy One to see decay. The resurrection assures believers of eternal life and the ultimate triumph over sin and death, as articulated in 1 Corinthians 15:20-22.
Persons / Places / Events
1. Jesus Christ
The central figure of this passage, who is foretelling His own suffering, death, and resurrection.

2. The Gentiles
Refers to the Roman authorities who would carry out the crucifixion, representing non-Jewish people.

3. Mocking, Flogging, and Crucifixion
The events that Jesus predicts will happen to Him, highlighting the suffering He will endure.

4. The Third Day
The time frame in which Jesus prophesies His resurrection, signifying victory over death.

5. Disciples
The audience to whom Jesus is speaking, who are being prepared for the events to come.
Teaching Points
Understanding Prophecy
Jesus' prediction of His death and resurrection demonstrates the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies, affirming the reliability of Scripture.

The Cost of Redemption
Reflect on the immense suffering Jesus willingly endured for our salvation, emphasizing the depth of His love and the seriousness of sin.

Victory Over Death
Jesus' resurrection on the third day is a cornerstone of Christian faith, offering hope and assurance of eternal life for believers.

Preparation for Trials
Just as Jesus prepared His disciples for His impending suffering, we too must be prepared for trials, trusting in God's ultimate plan and victory.

The Role of the Gentiles
The involvement of the Gentiles in Jesus' crucifixion highlights the universal scope of the Gospel, breaking down barriers between Jews and Gentiles.
Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers
(19) And the third day he shall rise again.--This, as before, came as a sequel of the prediction that seemed so terrible. The Master looked beyond the suffering to the victory over death, but the disciples could not enter into the meaning of the words that spoke of it. St. Luke, indeed (as if he had gathered from some of those who heard them what had been their state of feeling at the time), reports that "they understood none of these things, and this saying was hid from them, neither understood they the things that were spoken" (Luke 18:34). All was to them as a dark and dim dream, a cloud upon their Master's soul which time, they imagined, would disperse.

Pulpit Commentary
Verse 19. - The Gentiles. Pilate and the Romans (Matthew 27:2). The fact of his death he had impressed upon his apostles, but the mode had. not been mentioned; such an unexpected, awful, and ignomiuious close was incredible. and needed special preparation ere it could be received as true. Intimations, indeed, of such a death had been given darkly, when his disciples were told that they must take up the cross and follow him, or when he spoke of being "lifted up" like the serpent in the wilderness (John 3:14); but his words were not understood; they fell upon ears prejudiced to a certain erroneous conviction, which events alone could eradicate. He shall rise again (see on Matthew 16:21). It seems to us almost incredible that, after all that Christ said here and elsewhere, his resurrection should have come upon his followers as a surprise which they could not believe without tangible proof. But when we read of their dulness and unbelief; we are constrained to admire the candour and sincerity of narrators, who record such facts to their discredit without evasion or apology.
