In ancient times, road markers were essential for travelers to find their way, especially in unfamiliar or desolate areas. Spiritually, this can be seen as a call to remember God's laws and promises, which serve as guides for life. The road markers symbolize the need for clear direction and purpose in returning to God.
Put up the signposts
Signposts provide direction and reassurance. In the context of Israel's return from exile, this implies a need for clear guidance and reminders of the path back to their homeland and to God. Biblically, signposts can also represent prophetic messages or divine instructions that point the way to spiritual restoration and renewal.
Keep the highway in mind
The highway represents a direct and prepared path. In biblical times, highways were often built for royal processions or significant journeys. Spiritually, this can be interpreted as keeping one's focus on the path of righteousness and the journey back to a covenant relationship with God. It emphasizes the importance of intentionality and mindfulness in one's spiritual walk.
The road you have traveled
This phrase calls for reflection on past experiences and the journey taken. It suggests learning from history and past mistakes, recognizing the faithfulness of God throughout one's life. For Israel, it was a reminder of their journey through the wilderness and their history of covenant with God, urging them to remember and return to their roots.
Return, O Virgin Israel
The term "Virgin Israel" is significant, symbolizing purity and a renewed state. Despite Israel's past unfaithfulness, God calls them to return as a restored and cleansed people. This reflects God's grace and willingness to forgive and renew His people. It also foreshadows the ultimate redemption and purification through Jesus Christ, who restores believers to a state of spiritual purity.
Return to these cities of yours
This is a call to reclaim their inheritance and identity. The cities represent the promised land and the fulfillment of God's promises to Israel. Historically, it signifies the return from Babylonian exile and the restoration of the nation. Spiritually, it can be seen as a call to return to one's spiritual heritage and the blessings of living in accordance with God's will.
Persons / Places / Events
1. Jeremiah
A major prophet in the Old Testament, known for his messages of warning and hope to the people of Judah.

2. Virgin of Israel
A poetic term referring to the nation of Israel, emphasizing purity and a call to return to God.

3. Roadmarks and Signposts
Metaphorical symbols representing guidance and direction for the Israelites to return to their homeland and God.

4. Highway
Symbolizes the path of return and repentance, both physically to the land and spiritually to God.

5. Cities of Israel
Represents the places of heritage and promise that the Israelites are called to return to.
Teaching Points
Guidance and Direction
Just as Israel was instructed to set up roadmarks, believers today are called to seek God's guidance and establish spiritual disciplines that keep them on the right path.

Call to Repentance
The call to "return" is a reminder of the importance of repentance and turning back to God when we stray.

Spiritual Heritage
Remembering the "cities" or spiritual heritage we have in Christ can encourage us to remain faithful and return to our spiritual roots.

Intentional Living
Keeping the "highway in mind" suggests living with intentionality and purpose, focusing on our journey with God.

Hope and Restoration
The promise of return signifies hope and restoration, reminding us that no matter how far we wander, God always welcomes us back.
Lists and Questions
Top 10 Lessons from Jeremiah 31

Jeremiah 19:2 -- Where is the archaeological or historical evidence that child sacrifice actually took place in the Valley of Hinnom as described here?

Isaiah 57:5: Is there credible archaeological evidence that child sacrifice was widespread among Israelites, or is this an exaggerated polemic?

Leviticus 18:21 forbids child sacrifice to Molek; is there historical or archaeological evidence confirming this practice at that time?

How credible is the depiction of widespread child sacrifice in Ezekiel 16:20-21, given limited archaeological evidence for such practices in Jerusalem?
Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers
(21) Set thee up way marks . . .--It will be noted that the figure is changed, and that instead of "Ephraim, the dear son," we have Israel, the "back-sliding daughter." She is directed to mark out the road for the returning exiles. The command is obviously the. torical in form; the general sense is that the Israelites are to call to mind the road so familiar to their forefathers, though only known to themselves by tradition. The word rendered "waymarks" occurs again in 2 Kings 33:17 and Ezekiel 39:15. It apparently means a stone pillar, which might be used either as a waymark or a sepulchral monument. A passage in the Psalms (Psalm 84:6) will occur to every one, in which a psalmist, longing at a distance for the services of the temple, pronounces blessed the man "in whose heart are the highways [to Zion];" here, it is true, "heart" has the double meaning of "mind" and "affections," but "highway" has almost exactly the same sense as in the passage before us. To these thy cities.
