The poetic tradition emerged from the progressive appropriation and reinvention of earlier work, as individual skalds struggled to maintain the conventions of a highly circumscribed oral form, while at the same time passing down to posterity material that might differentiate them from their predecessors, contemporaries and successors. Here I examine how the competitive aspect of skaldic verse-making is expressed in poems attributed to two of the best known court poets of the earlier eleventh century, at the court of Óláfr Haraldsson of Norway, focussing on the indebtedness of Óttarr svarti in his Höfuðlausn to the Víkingarvísar of his kinsman Sigvatr Þórðarson. Patterns of echoes and parallel usages between the works of these court colleagues indicate that the hirðskáld actively engaged with the compositions of their contemporaries, advertising their ability to match or surpass them by referencing their work and developing new formulations from old.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Recreating Tradition: Sigvatr Þórðarson’s Víkingarvísur and Óttarr svarti’s Höfuðlausn","attachmentId":1992434,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/421052/Recreating_Tradition_Sigvatr_%C3%9E%C3%B3r%C3%B0arson_s_V%C3%ADkingarv%C3%ADsur_and_%C3%93ttarr_svarti_s_H%C3%B6fu%C3%B0lausn","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/421052/Recreating_Tradition_Sigvatr_%C3%9E%C3%B3r%C3%B0arson_s_V%C3%ADkingarv%C3%ADsur_and_%C3%93ttarr_svarti_s_H%C3%B6fu%C3%B0lausn"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="1" data-entity-id="38006652" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/38006652/Quaestiones_Medii_aevi_novae_2017_In_a_Quest_for_a_fame_and_recognItIon_on_the_role_of_%C3%BAtanfer%C3%B0_motIf_In_medIeval_IcelandIc_sagas_of_WarrIor_Poets">Quaestiones Medii aevi novae (2017) In a Quest for a fame and recognItIon - on the role of útanferð motIf In medIeval IcelandIc sagas of WarrIor-Poets</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="37476916" href="https://silesian.academia.edu/JakubMorawiec">Jakub Morawiec</a></div><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Quaestiones Medii aevi novae (2017) In a Quest for a fame and recognItIon - on the role of útanferð motIf In medIeval IcelandIc sagas of WarrIor-Poets","attachmentId":58026470,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/38006652/Quaestiones_Medii_aevi_novae_2017_In_a_Quest_for_a_fame_and_recognItIon_on_the_role_of_%C3%BAtanfer%C3%B0_motIf_In_medIeval_IcelandIc_sagas_of_WarrIor_Poets","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/38006652/Quaestiones_Medii_aevi_novae_2017_In_a_Quest_for_a_fame_and_recognItIon_on_the_role_of_%C3%BAtanfer%C3%B0_motIf_In_medIeval_IcelandIc_sagas_of_WarrIor_Poets"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="2" data-entity-id="22934666" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/22934666/Medieval_Self_Fashioning_R%C7%ABgnvaldr_Kali_Kolsson_and_Orkneyinga_saga_Scandinavica_54_2_2015_6_39">'Medieval Self-Fashioning: Rǫgnvaldr Kali Kolsson and Orkneyinga saga'. It argues that the character of Rǫgnvaldr Kali Kolsson, Earl of Orkney, is shown to fashion himself in the model of previous Scandinavian rulers as a means of asserting his right to govern, and that the relationship between poetry and prose is key to this process. Through the composition and recitation of verse, the character of Rǫgnvaldr asserts the power to craft his own story and thus to fashion his own identity and that of his subjects. In particular, the article demonstrates that Rǫgnvaldr's expedition to Jerusalem is central to the construction of the earl's story and of his self. It concludes by suggesting that such a depiction of self-fashioning may have been particularly resonant in medieval Iceland, itself a site of hybrid and shifting identities following Norwegian colonisation.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"'Medieval Self-Fashioning: Rǫgnvaldr Kali Kolsson and Orkneyinga saga'. This kind of rhetoric also challenges the concepts of subject and object, or more specifically personhood and objecthood. The article explores the social utility of object rhetoric for structuring collective memory in medieval Iceland by studying the named weapons of Laxdæla saga. The first section examines several texts’ depiction of the sword Skǫfnungr to illustrate how it possesses both personhood and objecthood simultaneously. The second section situates Skǫfnungr as one of five named weapons in Laxdæla saga. This results in an impoverished appreciation of both the detail of the episode in which Skallagrímr Kveldúlfsson tests a richly decorated battle axe given to him by the king of Norway and the treatment and symbolism of axes throughout the saga. This episode, complemented by subsequent axe references, reflects and reinforces the founding narrative of the settlement of Iceland and the strained relationship between Iceland and hegemonistic Norway in the thirteenth century, the likely date of the saga’s composition.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"An Ill-Tempered Axe for an Ill-Tempered Smith: The Gift of King Eiríkr blóðøx to Skallagrímr Kveldúlfsson in Egils saga Skallagrímssonar","attachmentId":113760145,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/118042608/An_Ill_Tempered_Axe_for_an_Ill_Tempered_Smith_The_Gift_of_King_Eir%C3%ADkr_bl%C3%B3%C3%B0%C3%B8x_to_Skallagr%C3%ADmr_Kveld%C3%BAlfsson_in_Egils_saga_Skallagr%C3%ADmssonar","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/118042608/An_Ill_Tempered_Axe_for_an_Ill_Tempered_Smith_The_Gift_of_King_Eir%C3%ADkr_bl%C3%B3%C3%B0%C3%B8x_to_Skallagr%C3%ADmr_Kveld%C3%BAlfsson_in_Egils_saga_Skallagr%C3%ADmssonar"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="6" data-entity-id="42323534" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/42323534/%C3%86thelred_II_the_Unready_and_the_Role_of_Kingship_in_Gunnlaugs_saga_Ormstungu">Æthelred II ‘the Unready’ and the Role of Kingship in Gunnlaugs saga Ormstungu</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="52541315" href="https://flinders.academia.edu/MatthewFirth">Matthew Firth</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--metadata ds2-5-body-xs">The Court Historian, 2020</p><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">Episodes of travel to foreign courts are a feature of Íslendingasögur — Icelandic family sagas. It is a trope particularly ubiquitous of the skáldasögur — poets’ sagas — where a skáld’s reputation as warrior and hero is augmented through interactions with historical figures of the Scandinavian world. The resultant depictions of various cultures and societies are one of the interesting features of the corpus. The late thirteenth-century Gunnlaugs saga provides a notably rich exemplar of the motif of the travelling skáld. The hero, Gunnlaug Illugason, travels widely, visiting the royal courts of England, Viking Dublin and Sweden, alongside various non-royal courts including that of Norway. Of particular interest is the portrayal of Æthelred II (978–1016) and the English court, which is not only at odds with the depictions of other courts within the narrative, but with the historical tradition of Æthelred’s fraught kingship. This article examines the differing portrayals of kingship within Gunnlaugs saga, questioning how Icelanders perceived English rulers in contrast to their Scandinavian counterparts, and whether Æthelred’s characterisation as a good king is authorial invention, or remnant cultural memory of his kingship.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Æthelred II ‘the Unready’ and the Role of Kingship in Gunnlaugs saga Ormstungu","attachmentId":67309168,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/42323534/%C3%86thelred_II_the_Unready_and_the_Role_of_Kingship_in_Gunnlaugs_saga_Ormstungu","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/42323534/%C3%86thelred_II_the_Unready_and_the_Role_of_Kingship_in_Gunnlaugs_saga_Ormstungu"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="7" data-entity-id="44800960" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/44800960/Objects_and_Agency_in_the_Medieval_North_The_Case_of_Old_Norse_Magic_Swords">Objects and Agency in the Medieval North: The Case of Old Norse Magic Swords</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="12700759" href="https://hi.academia.edu/MariuszMayburd">Mariusz Mayburd</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--metadata ds2-5-body-xs">Średniowiecze Polskie i Powszechne 12 (16), 2020</p><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">Literary depictions of magic swords in Old Norse sagas highlight the active role of objects in shaping and renegotiating human personal boundaries, identities, and self-experiences. A literary analysis of Morkinskinna’s Sneglu-Halla þáttr shows that the protagonist’s portrayal is a deliberate if somewhat exaggerated construction of how Icelanders abroad should behave, as well as which memories of the 11th century the 13th century Icelanders wished to preserve. Sneglu-Halli’s provocative behavior is seen as a positive character trait that, if pursued moderately, helps establish the uniqueness of the Icelander at court. This behavior is juxtaposed with the famous skald Þjóðólfr Arnórsson, whose undoubted success at court is downplayed in the þáttr due to his running away from his meager Icelandic beginnings. Cultural Memory studies are the key to understanding this artistic manipulation, since the way we remember the past establishes our perception of the present.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Scolding the Skald: The Construction of Cultural Memory in Morkinskinna’s Sneglu-Halla þáttr","attachmentId":65539564,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/34581603/Scolding_the_Skald_The_Construction_of_Cultural_Memory_in_Morkinskinna_s_Sneglu_Halla_%C3%BE%C3%A1ttr","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/34581603/Scolding_the_Skald_The_Construction_of_Cultural_Memory_in_Morkinskinna_s_Sneglu_Halla_%C3%BE%C3%A1ttr"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div></div></div><div class="ds-sticky-ctas--wrapper js-loswp-sticky-ctas hidden"><div class="ds-sticky-ctas--grid-container"><div class="ds-sticky-ctas--container"><button class="ds2-5-button js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"continue-reading-button--sticky-ctas","attachmentId":60798721,"attachmentType":"doc","workUrl":null}">See full PDF</button><button class="ds2-5-button ds2-5-button--secondary js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"download-pdf-button--sticky-ctas","attachmentId":60798721,"attachmentType":"doc","workUrl":null}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 20px" translate="no">download</span>Download PDF</button></div></div></div><div class="ds-below-fold--grid-container"><div class="ds-work--container js-loswp-embedded-document"><div class="attachment_preview" data-attachment="Attachment_60798721" style="display: none"><div class="js-scribd-document-container"><div class="scribd--document-loading js-scribd-document-loader" style="display: block;"><img alt="Loading..." src="//a.academia-assets.com/images/loaders/paper-load.gif" /><p>Loading Preview</p></div></div><div style="text-align: center;"><div class="scribd--no-preview-alert js-preview-unavailable"><p>Sorry, preview is currently unavailable.
