En janvier 2015, une grande campagne de fouille s'est déroulée dans la région de Kaniasso (Côte d'Ivoire), princi-palement sur les sites proches du village de Doumbala. Les travaux sont menés en collaboration avec les universités d'Abidjan et de Ouagadougou. En bordure du village moderne de Doumbala s'étend une importante zone d'ac-tivité métallurgique comptant une cinquantaine d'amas de scorie. Plusieurs fourneaux sont en très bon état et l'activité est très récente (18–19 e s. AD). Sur le plan de l'archi-tecture, les fourneaux récents de Doumbala sont différents de ceux de Siola, mais ils fonctionnent d'une manière similaire et l'organisation des ateliers présente de très nombreux points communs. Il s'agit donc d'une variante locale de la tradition KAN 3. A quelques centaines de mètres au Sud, une seconde zone, Doumbala Kokoroni, compte aussi une cinquantaine de fourneaux mais associés avec des quantités nette-ment moindres de déchets. Les fourneaux appartiennent à deux traditions techniques différentes qui sont aussi des variantes locales des deux traditions anciennes mises en évidence à Siola (KAN 1 et 2). Les vestiges sont datés entre le 14 e et le 17 e s. AD. Le changement de technologie se place entre 1450 et 1550 AD. Les recherches se développent au Burkina Faso, en particulier dans la province du Bam et autour du site de Yamané. Sur ce site, une nouvelle tradition technique, YNSB, peut être décrite. 1. Le projet «Origine et développement de la métallurgie du fer au Burkina et en Côte d'Ivoire»: 1.1 Introduction La production traditionnelle du fer était encore pratiquée dans de nombreuses régions d'Afrique de l'Ouest au moment de l'arrivée des colons européens. Les premiers ad-ministrateurs ont pu observer cette activité et plusieurs excellents comptes rendus don-nent des descriptions précises. Au cours du 20 e siècle, les recherches sur ce thème ont été nombreuses, à la fois sur le plan ethnographique pour documenter les pratiques contemporaines et dans le registre de l'archéologie avec l'identification des vestiges d'anciens sites de production. On signale des vestiges de production du fer dans l'ensemble de l'Afrique de l'Ouest, depuis l'embouchure du Sénégal jusqu'aux rives du Lac Tchad. La bande sa-hélienne est particulièrement riche, mais les zones forestières du Sud ne sont pas com-plètement vides. A côté d'une production disséminée, pouvant correspondre aux be-soins des populations locales, on constate l'existence d'au moins une vingtaine de grands districts où la production a été massive, avec des amoncellements de scories atteignant des centaines de milliers de tonnes. Ces ensembles témoignent d'une ac-tivité intensive clairement destinée à produire des surplus et donc alimenter un réseau d'échange à longue distance. Ce phénomène de production de masse reflète un pro-fond changement dans l'organisation économique des sociétés concernées. Pour com-prendre les modalités de cette transformation, il importe donc de reconstituer en dé-tail l'évolution de la production du fer à l'échelle régionale. En janvier 2015, une grande campagne de fouille s'est déroulée dans la région de Kaniasso (Côte d'Ivoire), princi-palement sur les sites proches du village de Doumbala. Les travaux sont menés en collaboration avec les universités d'Abidjan et de Ouagadougou. En bordure du village moderne de Doumbala s'étend une importante zone d'ac-tivité métallurgique comptant une cinquantaine d'amas de scorie. Plusieurs fourneaux sont en très bon état et l'activité est très récente (18–19 e s. AD). Sur le plan de l'archi-tecture, les fourneaux récents de Doumbala sont différents de ceux de Siola, mais ils fonctionnent d'une manière similaire et l'organisation des ateliers présente de très nombreux points communs. Il s'agit donc d'une variante locale de la tradition KAN 3. A quelques centaines de mètres au Sud, une seconde zone, Doumbala Kokoroni, compte aussi une cinquantaine de fourneaux mais associés avec des quantités nette-ment moindres de déchets. Les fourneaux appartiennent à deux traditions techniques différentes qui sont aussi des variantes locales des deux traditions anciennes mises en évidence à Siola (KAN 1 et 2). Les vestiges sont datés entre le 14 e et le 17 e s. AD. Le changement de technologie se place entre 1450 et 1550 AD. Les recherches se développent au Burkina Faso, en particulier dans la province du Bam et autour du site de Yamané. Sur ce site, une nouvelle tradition technique, YNSB, peut être décrite. 1. Le projet «Origine et développement de la métallurgie du fer au Burkina et en Côte d'Ivoire»: 1.1 Introduction La production traditionnelle du fer était encore pratiquée dans de nombreuses régions d'Afrique de l'Ouest au moment de l'arrivée des colons européens. Les premiers ad-ministrateurs ont pu observer cette activité et plusieurs excellents comptes rendus don-nent des descriptions précises. Au cours du 20 e siècle, les recherches sur ce thème ont été nombreuses, à la fois sur le plan ethnographique pour documenter les pratiques contemporaines et dans le registre de l'archéologie avec l'identification des vestiges d'anciens sites de production. On signale des vestiges de production du fer dans l'ensemble de l'Afrique de l'Ouest, depuis l'embouchure du Sénégal jusqu'aux rives du Lac Tchad. La bande sa-hélienne est particulièrement riche, mais les zones forestières du Sud ne sont pas com-plètement vides. A côté d'une production disséminée, pouvant correspondre aux be-soins des populations locales, on constate l'existence d'au moins une vingtaine de grands districts où la production a été massive, avec des amoncellements de scories atteignant des centaines de milliers de tonnes. Ces ensembles témoignent d'une ac-tivité intensive clairement destinée à produire des surplus et donc alimenter un réseau d'échange à longue distance. Ce phénomène de production de masse reflète un pro-fond changement dans l'organisation économique des sociétés concernées. Pour com-prendre les modalités de cette transformation, il importe donc de reconstituer en dé-tail l'évolution de la production du fer à l'échelle régionale.
