Based on secondary data, the study is intended to draw the scenario of RMG industry in Bangladesh, especially the growth, contribution, and challenges. It is the largest exporting industry in Bangladesh that has experienced tremendous growth during the last 25 years. Among the people of Bangladesh, about 4 million workers are directly employed in RMG sector. Therefore, the contribution of RMG in total export is increasing day by day. At present, 83.9% of national export in Bangladesh is contributed by RMG export although it was 3.89% in 1983-1984. In fiscal year (FY) 2017-2018, the percentage of ready-made garments (RMG) contribution to gross domestic product (GDP) is 12.26% but it was only 2.74% in FY 1990-1991. So, it indicates that RMG sector is the main contributor of Bangladesh\u0026amp;#39;s economy, especially in the export of the country. This sector also faces a lot of challenges, like unskilled workers, insufficient infrastructure, raw materials, energy crisis, safety issue, political crisis, and coverage of accord and alliance. RMG industry has been functioning in Bangladesh since long as a catalyst for sustainable development and growth of the country. It is the largest exporting industry in Bangladesh that has experienced tremendous growth during the last 25 years. It provided more than five million direct jobs, 16 percent of GDP, and more than 81 percent of foreign exchange earnings in FY2013 -2014. The Knitwear industry is adding up to 75% value, which opens up enormous potential for foreign and domestic investors to spend in the areas of spinning, weaving, sewing, packaging, and accessories manufacturing. Despite the stupendous growth of the RMG industry, and its bright prospects, challenges are still there. In order to address the challenges, a number of collaborative and coordinated steps should be initiated. Along with establishing sound infrastructure, skill manpower, improved productivity, enhanced market access, market diversification, access to finance at competitive interest rate, and establishment of secured special industrial zones are crying need for the industry. Along with its potentiality the sector is also experiencing new challenges which can be the future determinants of its sustainability. The present study has made on descriptive research, is conducted to identify different dimension of challenges in readymade garment industry in Bangladesh and a feasible solution to cope up the challenges. To accomplish result research technique has relied based on information from secondary sources. From the inception of RMG in 1978 Bangladesh has seen a tremendous growth of the number of factories in consistent with the amount of export. In year 1983-84 there were only 134 RMG units where only 40000 workers were working in this sector but in 2013-2014 the number of RMG units increases around 6000 with the employment of around 4.2 million workers among them almost 80% are female. Secondary data based this study intended to draw the overall scenario and the growth trend of this industry, mainly to empirically analyze the contribution of ready-made garments industry on the economic development of Bangladesh. The results obtained from the Fully Modified Ordinary Least Squares (FMOLS) model reveal that, ready-made garments export significantly increases gross domestic product growth of Bangladesh. Results of Granger causality test affirmed the appearance of bidirectional causal association between gross domestic product growth and ready-made garments export. Though tremendous growth is achieved in last few decades, but some severe problems are prevailing in this sector those are highly responsible for the declining trend of the contribution of ready-made garments export to Bangladesh's gross domestic product for last five years. Therefore, it is highly recommended to take initiatives for attracting foreign direct investments, making investment friendly monetary and fiscal policies, minimizing dependency on foreign countries for technical and financial support and most importantly for ensuring the safety of workplace. Textiles & Clothing account for about 85% of total export earnings of Bangladesh. Out of which 76% comes from the apparel sector which covers the major products of knit & woven shirts, blouses, trousers, skirts, shorts, sweaters, sportswear's & many more casual & fashion items. The sector currently employs approximately 1.5 million workers, mostly females from underprivileged social classes. The pivotal factor in apparel industry is the workforce i.e. the operators, helpers, cutting masters, finishers etc. Bangladesh is endowed with abundant & cheap workforce that is easily trainable & convertible into semiskilled & skilled workforce. Existence of such category is one of the advantages that Bangladesh will be enjoying over a considerable period in the context of international trade on clothing. To cope up with global challenge we must adopt with factors of technological advancement with proper working environment in textile & apparel sector of the country.
