Purpose: The purpose of this study is to explain the effect of virtual reality on cognitive function in elderly people with dementia based on empirical studies in the last five years. Old age is viewed both as a stage in the life span of individual and also a segment of the population of the society. Cognitive impairment is often seen in geriatric patients, which can be disabling. The aim of the study was to assess the effectiveness of virtual reality therapy upon cognition among old age people residing at selected old age homes in Chennai. Study was conducted using pre experimental, one group pretest posttest research design. The participants of the present study were selected using purposive sampling technique. Data were collected using demographic variable proforma, clinical variable proforma, and mini mental status examination scale. The collected data were statistically analyzed and the results revealed that cognition scores in old age people in posttest was higher (M=18.9, SD=2.032) than the pretest (M = 15.3, SD = 2.092). This difference was found to be statistically significant at p < .001. The study findings revealed that virtual reality therapy is effective in improving cognition among old age people. Nurses can be instrumental in administering virtual reality therapy to improve the cognition by which psychological wellbeing and coping of the old age persons can also be improved. Research into possible applications of virtual reality in such interventions has begun only recently. The aim of present study was to evaluate the effects of 8 sessions of VR-based cognitive training using the GRADYS game in healthy older adults (n = 72; aged 60-88) and older adults living with mild dementia (n = 27; aged 60-89). Results: Older adults with mild dementia demonstrated worse baseline cognitive performance than participants without dementia. Both groups showed progress in training, which was greater in healthy older adults. There were also significant differences in cognitive functioning before and after the training. However, positive changes were revealed almost exclusively in the group of older adults without dementia. Based on the findings, we can recommend the GRADYS game for cognitive enhancement and as a possible countermeasure for cognitive decline experienced in normal cognitive ageing. Our results provide also support for the usefulness of VR technology in cognitive interventions in older adults. METHODS: A single site (Henley Place at London, Ontario) case series with a convenience sample (24 older adult residents with moderate to severe dementia). Intervention was 30 minutes of VR experience with Broomx©, five days a week for two weeks. Disease, 2021</p><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">Background: People with advanced dementia often exhibit responsive behaviors such as apathy, depression, agitation, aggression, and psychosis. Non-pharmacological approaches (e.g., listening to music, watching television, doing arts and crafts) are now considered as a first-line strategy to manage responsive behaviors in clinical practice due to the potential risks associated with the antipsychotic medications. To date, no evaluations of immersive non-head mounted virtual reality (VR) experience as a non-pharmacologic approach for people with advanced dementia living in nursing homes have been reported. Objective: To evaluate the feasibility (acceptance and safety) of VR experience. Methods: A single site case series (nonrandomized and unblinded) with a convenience sample (N = 24; age = 85.8 ± 8.6 years; Cognitive Performance Scale score = 3.4 ± 0.6) measuring depression and agitation before and after the intervention.
