The name Adah means "ornament" or "adornment," reflecting perhaps the cultural or familial significance attributed to these women.

1. Adah, Wife of Lamech: The first mention of Adah is found in the genealogical records of Genesis. Adah was one of the two wives of Lamech, a descendant of Cain. In Genesis 4:19-20 , it is recorded: "And Lamech took two wives, one named Adah and the other Zillah. Adah gave birth to Jabal; he was the father of those who dwell in tents and raise livestock." Adah's son Jabal is noted for his role as the progenitor of those who live a nomadic lifestyle, dwelling in tents and tending to livestock, indicating the early development of pastoral life. Her other son, Jubal, is mentioned in Genesis 4:21 as "the father of all who play the harp and flute," suggesting a contribution to the cultural and musical heritage of humanity.

2. Adah, Wife of Esau: The second Adah is mentioned in the context of Esau's family. In Genesis 36:2 , it states: "Esau took his wives from the daughters of Canaan: Adah daughter of Elon the Hittite, and Oholibamah daughter of Anah and granddaughter of Zibeon the Hivite." Adah was one of Esau's Canaanite wives, and she bore him a son named Eliphaz. Through Eliphaz, Adah became the grandmother of Amalek, the ancestor of the Amalekites, a people who would later become adversaries of Israel. The marriage of Esau to Canaanite women, including Adah, is often viewed within the biblical narrative as a departure from the covenantal lineage, contrasting with the marriages of Jacob, Esau's brother, who married within the family of Abraham.

The accounts of both women named Adah highlight the genealogical and cultural developments in the early biblical history. Adah, as a name, is associated with the beginnings of pastoral and musical traditions through her sons with Lamech, and with the complex interrelations between the descendants of Esau and the surrounding peoples through her marriage to Esau. These narratives contribute to the broader themes of lineage, culture, and covenant found throughout the Scriptures.
Hitchcock's Bible Names Dictionary
Adah
an assembly
Smith's Bible Dictionary
Adah
(ornament, beauty).

The first of the two wives of Lamech, by whom were borne to him Jabal and Jubal.
