James, Arthur Machen and Robert Aickman- by redefining and expanding the definition of the term to move beyond sexuality. It is not the authors themselves that are queer, it argues, but the representations of the ghostly figures and the identities of their protagonists that are queer through non-normativity and comparison with contemporary examples. Using work by Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick on ‘queerness’ in combination with Mark Fisher’s theory of the weird and the eerie, it will show how queer identities are both constitutive and fracturing within the texts, as well as exploring how this is connected with both the presences and absences found within them. It will first explore the context and history of ghosts and ghostly literature throughout the nineteenth century, as well as offering a survey of the linguistic and theoretical history of the term ‘queer’ and queer theory in general, before using this outline to analyse James, Machen and Aickman in turn. The argument will focus on moving beyond extant criticism on the authors, particularly psychoanalytical analyses, to show how authorial intent and personal biography is not always an essential component of literary criticism. A key component of the argument will be to show how fractured identities- of ghosts that manifest in unfamiliar ways, humans that move between states of being and tensions between past and present, society and nature- work to displace and threaten constitutive identities, introducing weirdness of eeriness into normative spaces. Situated in the rural-folkloric environment, we suspect that this film allows, through the use of a legend and in the face of the socio-cultural changes that occurred in the mid-fifties, to give metaphorical form to social fear and anxiety regarding control over women’s bodies and their reproductive capacity, and represent/exorcise, in a punctual figuration, singleness. It looks at brutality, falsehood, deception, irrationality, and above all, matriarchal sexual subjugation, and oppression through the patriarchal power and domination between individuals of the 19th century Scandinavian Bourgeois society. Special attention is given to the missives addressed to the female spirits: the so-called misplaced stele of Merityfy, the Berlin bowl 22573, Papyrus Leiden I 371, and Ostracon Louvre 698. The investigation has highlighted the existence of a ritual to appease wrathful female ghosts. The malevolent attitude of these spirits is explained in the light of their premature death, perhaps during childbirth. Another trigger is identified as the fear of being replaced in their social role of “mistress of the house” by another woman (for example, because the husband was planning to remarry). Drawing on recent work in queer theory, I argue that both children and ghosts are queered by the illegibility of their motives and desires and by their temporal dislocation. That is, both the child and the dead person who lingers as a ghost are inscrutable to present observers, available as objects of knowledge only through retrospection. It is stressed that ghosts and haunting, i.e. the activity associated with ghosts, are widely used metaphors in the female Gothic, which is a sub-genre of the Gothic that addresses the themes of gender oppression and domestic entrapment, which are emblematic of women’s experience under patriarchy. This article argues that both What Lies Beneath and The Hidden Face depict the haunting of a woman by another woman who is either dead, or alive albeit dead to the world, in such a way as to articulate feminist concerns and draw attention to gender oppression. It is asserted that while the former film makes use of the ghost of a murdered woman to address female victimization and male violence against women, the latter film deals with the “ghosting,” or erasure, of women within patriarchal, phallocentric power structures that negate her existence.
