The Scriptures provide numerous examples and teachings that highlight the tendency of the wicked to justify their wrongdoing, thereby compounding their guilt before God.

Human Nature and Excuses

From the earliest accounts in Genesis, humanity's inclination to excuse sin is evident. When confronted by God after eating the forbidden fruit, Adam blames Eve, and Eve blames the serpent (Genesis 3:12-13). This pattern of shifting blame illustrates a fundamental aspect of human nature: the reluctance to take responsibility for one's actions.

Rationalization of Sin

The wicked often rationalize their behavior, attempting to make sin appear less egregious. Proverbs 21:2 states, "All a man’s ways seem right to him, but the LORD weighs the heart." This verse underscores the self-deception inherent in the wicked, who convince themselves of the righteousness of their actions, even when they are contrary to God's commands.

False Justifications

The wicked may also employ false justifications to excuse their sin. In Isaiah 5:20, the prophet warns, "Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who turn darkness into light and light into darkness, who replace bitter with sweet and sweet with bitter." This deliberate distortion of moral values is a hallmark of the wicked, who seek to legitimize their sinful behavior by redefining what is good and evil.

Ignoring Divine Warnings

Another form of excuse is the willful ignorance of divine warnings. In Jeremiah 7:24, it is written, "Yet they did not listen or incline their ear, but followed the stubborn inclinations of their own evil hearts. They went backward and not forward." The wicked often ignore God's warnings and continue in their sinful ways, excusing their actions by refusing to acknowledge the truth.

Consequences of Excusing Sin

The Bible makes it clear that excusing sin does not absolve the wicked of their guilt. In Romans 1:20, Paul writes, "For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—His eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from His workmanship, so that men are without excuse." This passage emphasizes that the evidence of God's nature leaves humanity without excuse for their sinfulness.

The Call to Repentance

Despite the tendency of the wicked to excuse their sin, the Bible consistently calls for repentance and a turning away from wickedness. In Acts 3:19, Peter exhorts, "Repent, then, and turn back, so that your sins may be wiped away." The call to repentance is a central theme, urging individuals to acknowledge their sin, abandon their excuses, and seek forgiveness through faith in Jesus Christ.

In summary, the Scriptures reveal that the wicked often seek to excuse their sin through blame-shifting, rationalization, false justifications, and ignoring divine warnings. However, these excuses do not mitigate their guilt before God, who calls all to repentance and faith.
Torrey's Topical Textbook
Genesis 3:12,13
And the man said, The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.
Torrey's Topical Textbook
1 Samuel 15:13-15
And Samuel came to Saul: and Saul said to him, Blessed be you of the LORD: I have performed the commandment of the LORD.
Torrey's Topical Textbook

Library

Whether all Dissimulation is a Sin?
... the title of Ps.33, "I will bless the Lord at all times." There is no need to excuse
Jehu's dissimulation from sin or lie, because he was a wicked man, since ...
/.../aquinas/summa theologica/whether all dissimulation is a.htm
And Some Indeed, who are Used to Excuse their Own Sins...
... corrupt; and they say that they then sin when the ... But what wicked contamination and
corruption do they not deserve ... there are also they who in excuse of their ...
//christianbookshelf.org/augustine/on continence/section 14 and some indeed.htm
The Heinous Sin of Profane Cursing and Swearing
... It was some excuse for the drunkenness of Noah, and the ... profaned and scoffed at by
unrighteous and wicked men ... not be imputed to sincere persons for sin, so long ...
/.../whitefield/selected sermons of george whitefield/the heinous sin of profane.htm
Illness and Patience of the Saint.
