go down there and buy for us there, and we will live and we will not die.” <A name="4"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/42-3.htm#aramaic"><b>3</b></a></span>And ten brothers of Yoseph went down to buy grain from Egypt. <A name="5"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/42-4.htm#aramaic"><b>4</b></a></span>And Yaquuv did not send Benyamin, the brother of Yoseph, with his brothers, because he said, “Lest calamity will come to him.” <A name="6"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/42-5.htm#aramaic"><b>5</b></a></span>And the sons of Israel came to buy with those who were going, because the famine was severe in the land of Canaan.<p> <A name="7"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/42-6.htm#aramaic"><b>6</b></a></span>And Yoseph was authorized over the land, and he sold to all the people of the land and the brothers of Yoseph came and bowed down to him on their faces on the ground. <A name="8"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/42-7.htm#aramaic"><b>7</b></a></span>And Yoseph saw his brothers and he recognized them, and he acted deceitfully toward them and he spoke with them harshly and said to them, “From where are you?” And they said, “From the land of Canaan; we come to buy grain.”<p> <A name="9"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/42-8.htm#aramaic"><b>8</b></a></span>And Yoseph recognized his brothers and they did not recognize him. <A name="10"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/42-9.htm#aramaic"><b>9</b></a></span>And Yoseph remembered the dream that he dreamt of them and said to them, “You are spies and you have come to notice the report of the land.” <A name="11"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/42-10.htm#aramaic"><b>10</b></a></span>And they said, “No, our Lord, your Servants have come to buy grain. <A name="12"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/42-11.htm#aramaic"><b>11</b></a></span>All of us are sons of one man, and we are righteous, and your Servants are not spies.” <A name="13"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/42-12.htm#aramaic"><b>12</b></a></span>Yoseph said to them, “It is not so; you have come to show the report of the land.” <A name="14"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/42-13.htm#aramaic"><b>13</b></a></span>And they said to him, “We are twelve brothers; your Servants are the sons of one man in the land of Canaan, and behold, the youngest is with our father today, and one is not.” <A name="15"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/42-14.htm#aramaic"><b>14</b></a></span>Yoseph said to them, “It is what I said to you; you are spies! <A name="16"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/42-15.htm#aramaic"><b>15</b></a></span>In this you will be proven; by the life of Pharaoh, you shall not go out from here unless your little brother comes here. <A name="17"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/42-16.htm#aramaic"><b>16</b></a></span>Send one of you to bring your brother and you will all be bound and your words will be tested, if you have spoken the truth, otherwise, by the life of Pharaoh, you are spies!” <A name="18"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/42-17.htm#aramaic"><b>17</b></a></span>And he cast them into the prison house three days.<p> <A name="19"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/42-18.htm#aramaic"><b>18</b></a></span>And Yoseph said to them on the third day, “Do this and live; I worship God: <A name="20"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/42-19.htm#aramaic"><b>19</b></a></span>If you are just, your one brother will be bound in your prison house, and you go bring out grain to the hungry that are in your house: <A name="21"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/42-20.htm#aramaic"><b>20</b></a></span>And bring your little brother to me, and your words will be believed, and you shall not die”, and they did so. <A name="22"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/42-21.htm#aramaic"><b>21</b></a></span>And they said, each man to his brothers, “Truly we are condemned concerning our brother, for we did see the anxiety of his soul when he was making supplication to us and we did not listen to him, because of this, this distress has come upon us.” <A name="23"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/42-22.htm#aramaic"><b>22</b></a></span>And Rubil answered and said to them, “Did I not say to you, ‘Do not sin against the boy’, and you did not listen? Even now, behold, his blood is required. <A name="24"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/42-23.htm#aramaic"><b>23</b></a></span>And they were not aware that Yoseph heard, because an interpreter was standing among them. <A name="25"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/42-24.htm#aramaic"><b>24</b></a></span>And he turned from their presence and wept, and returned to them and he spoke with them, and he took Shemon from them and bound him in their sight.<p> <A name="26"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/42-25.htm#aramaic"><b>25</b></a></span>And Yoseph commanded and they filled their vessels with grain, and to return their money to each man in his sack, and to give them provisions for the road, and they did so for them.<p> <A name="27"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/42-26.htm#aramaic"><b>26</b></a></span>And they took their food on their donkeys and they went from there. <A name="28"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/42-27.htm#aramaic"><b>27</b></a></span>And one of them opened his sack to throw hay for his donkey, at the lodging house, and he saw his money laid in the mouth of his pack. <A name="29"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/42-28.htm#aramaic"><b>28</b></a></span>And he said to his brother, “My money is returned and behold, it is in the mouth of my pack”, and their heart was moved, and each man marveled with his brother and they said, “What is this that God has done to us?”<p> <A name="30"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/42-29.htm#aramaic"><b>29</b></a></span>And they came to Yaquuv their father, to the land of Canaan and told him everything that had occurred to them, and they said to him. <A name="31"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/42-30.htm#aramaic"><b>30</b></a></span>“The man, the Lord of the land, spoke with us severely and he considered us as spies of the land. <A name="32"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/42-31.htm#aramaic"><b>31</b></a></span>And we were saying to him, “We are just and we are not spies: <A name="33"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/42-32.htm#aramaic"><b>32</b></a></span>We are twelve brothers, sons of our father, and one is not, and the youngest is with our father today in the land of Canaan. <A name="34"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/42-33.htm#aramaic"><b>33</b></a></span>And the man, the Lord of the land, said to us, ‘In this I shall know that you are righteous: leave your one brother with me and take the grain for the hungry that are in your house and go: <A name="35"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/42-34.htm#aramaic"><b>34</b></a></span>And bring your little brother to me, and I shall know that you are not spies, but you are good, and I shall give your brother to you and you will do business in the land.’”<p> <A name="36"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/42-35.htm#aramaic"><b>35</b></a></span>And it was that when they emptied their sacks, behold, the moneybag of the man’s money was in the mouth of his pack, and they saw the moneybags of their money, they and their father, and they were afraid. <A name="37"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/42-36.htm#aramaic"><b>36</b></a></span>Yaquuv their father said to them, “You have bereaved me; Yoseph is not, and Shemon is not, and you will take Benyamin; all these things are the end of me!” <A name="38"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/genesis/42-37.htm#aramaic"><b>37</b></a></span>And Rubil said to his father, “Put my two sons to death if I shall not bring him to you;
