<a href ="../1_corinthians/11.htm#17">1 Corinthians 11:17–34</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>And, when the hour came, He reclined <i>at table</i>, and His apostles with Him. <A name="16"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>And He said to them, <FR>"With desire I desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer:<Fr> <A name="17"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span><FR>for I say to you, I will in no wise eat it, until it be fulfilled in the Kingdom of God."<Fr> <A name="18"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>And, having taken a cup, <i>and</i> giving thanks, He said, <FR>"Take this, and share it among yourselves;<Fr> <A name="19"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span><FR>for I say to you, that I will in no wise drink, henceforth, of the product of the vine, until the Kingdom of God shall come."<Fr> <A name="20"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>And, taking bread, <i>and</i> giving thanks, He broke, and gave to them, saying, <FR>"This is My body, which is given for you; this do in remembrance of Me."<Fr> <A name="21"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>And the cup, in like manner, after supper, saying <FR>"this cup is the new covenant in My blood, which, in your behalf, is being poured out.<Fr> <A name="22"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span><FR>But, behold, the hand of him who is betraying Me <i>is</i> with Me on the table;<Fr> <A name="23"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span><FR>because the Son of Man, indeed, is going according as it has been determined; but woe to that man through whom He is betrayed!"<Fr> <A name="24"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>And they began to inquire together among themselves, which of them it was, who was about to perpetrate this thing.<p> <A name="25"></a><p class="hdg">Who Is the Greatest?<p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>And there arose also a contention among them as to which of them seemed to be greatest. <A name="26"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>But He said to them, <FR>"The kings of the gentiles exercise lordship over them; and those having authority over them are called 'Benefactors.'<Fr> <A name="27"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span><FR>But ye <i>are</i> not so; but let the greater among you become as the younger, and he who leads as he who serves.<Fr> <A name="28"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span><FR>For who is greater, he who reclines <i>at table</i>, or he who serves? Is not he who reclines? But I am in the midst of you as One Who serveth.<Fr><p> <A name="29"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span><FR>But ye are they who have remained with Me in my temptations;<Fr> <A name="30"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span><FR>and I appoint to you, as My Father appointed to Me, a Kingdom,<Fr> <A name="31"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span><FR>that ye may eat and drink at My table in My Kingdom; and ye shall sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.<Fr><p> <A name="32"></a><p class="hdg">Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/26.htm#31">Matthew 26:31–35</a>; <a href ="../mark/14.htm#27">Mark 14:27–31</a>; <a href ="../john/13.htm#36">John 13:36–38</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span><FR>"Simon, Simon, behold, Satan asked for you, to sift <i>you</i> as the wheat;<Fr> <A name="33"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span><FR>but I prayed for you, that your faith fail not; and, when once you have turned again, establish your brethren."<Fr> <A name="34"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>And he said to Him, "Lord, I am ready to go with Thee, both to prison and to death." <A name="35"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>And He said, <FR>"I tell you, Peter, a cock will not crow to-day, until you thrice deny that you know Me."<Fr><p> <A name="36"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>And He said to them, <FR>"When I sent you forth without purse, and wallet, and sandals, did ye lack anything?"<Fr> And they said, "Nothing." <A name="37"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>And He said to them, <FR>"But now let him who has a purse take it, and likewise a wallet; and let him who has not a sword sell his garment, and buy <i>one</i>.<Fr> <A name="38"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span><FR>For I say to you, that that which has been written must be accomplished in Me, 'And He was reckoned with lawless ones;' for that <i>which</i> relates to Me has an end."<Fr> <A name="39"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span>And they said, "Lord, behold, here <i>are</i> two swords." And His sweat became, as it were, large drops of blood falling down upon the ground! <A name="46"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-45.htm"><b>45</b></a></span>And, arising from prayer, <i>and</i> coming to the disciples, He found them sleeping for grief, <A name="47"></a><span class="red"><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-46.htm"><b>46</b></a></span>and said to them, <FR>"Why are ye sleeping? Rising up, pray, that ye enter not into temptation."<Fr><p> <A name="48"></a><p class="hdg">The Betrayal of Jesus<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/26.htm#47">Matthew 26:47–56</a>; <a href ="../mark/14.htm#43">Mark 14:43–52</a>; <a href ="../john/18.htm">John 18:1–14</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-47.htm"><b>47</b></a></span>While He was yet speaking, behold, a multitude, and he who is called Judas, one of the twelve, was coming before them; and he drew near to Jesus to kiss Him. <A name="49"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-48.htm"><b>48</b></a></span>And Jesus said to him, <FR>"Judas, do ye betray the Son of Man with a kiss?"<Fr> <A name="50"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-49.htm"><b>49</b></a></span>And those about Him, seeing what was about to follow, said, "Lord, shall we smite with the sword?" <A name="51"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-50.htm"><b>50</b></a></span>And a certain one of them smote the servant of the high priest, and struck off his right ear. <A name="52"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-51.htm"><b>51</b></a></span>But Jesus, answering, said, <FR>"Suffer ye thus far."<Fr> And, touching the ear, He healed him. <A name="53"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-52.htm"><b>52</b></a></span>And Jesus said to the high priests and captains of the temple and elders, who came up against Him, <FR>"Did ye come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs?<Fr> <A name="54"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-53.htm"><b>53</b></a></span><FR>When I was daily with you in the temple, ye stretched not forth <i>your</i> hands against Me; but this is your hour, and the power of darkness."<Fr><p> <A name="55"></a><p class="hdg">Peter Denies Jesus<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/26.htm#69">Matthew 26:69–75</a>; <a href ="../mark/14.htm#66">Mark 14:66–72</a>; <a href ="../john/18.htm#15">John 18:15–18</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-54.htm"><b>54</b></a></span>And, seizing Him, they led Him away, and brought Him into the house of the high priest. But Peter was following afar off. <A name="56"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-55.htm"><b>55</b></a></span>And, they having kindled a fire in the midst of the court, and having sat down together, Peter was sitting in the midst of them. <A name="57"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-56.htm"><b>56</b></a></span>And a certain maid, seeing him sitting by the light, and looking intently at him, said, "This man also was with Him." <A name="58"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-57.htm"><b>57</b></a></span>But he denied, saying, "I do not know Him, woman." <A name="59"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-58.htm"><b>58</b></a></span>And, after a little while, another, seeing him, said, "You also are <i>one</i> of them." But Peter said, "Man, I am not." <A name="60"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-59.htm"><b>59</b></a></span>And, about one hour having intervened, a certain other was confidently insisting, saying, "Of a truth this one also was with Him; for he also is a Galilaean." <A name="61"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/22-60.htm"><b>60</b></a></span>But Peter said, "Man, I know not what you are saying."
