and I submitted<MG394> to them the gospel<MG2098> which<MG3739> I preach<MG2784> among<MG1722> the Gentiles<MG1484>, but <i>I did so</i> in private<MG2596, 2398> to those<MG3588> who were of reputation<MG1380>, for<MG3381> fear<MG3381> that<MG3381> somehow<MG4458> I might be running<MG5143>, or<MG2228> had run<MG5143>, in vain<MG2756>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/galatians/2-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>But not even<MG3761> Titus<MG5103>, who<MG3588> was with me, though he was a Greek<MG1672>, was compelled<MG315> to be circumcised<MG4059>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/galatians/2-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>Yet<MG1161> <i>it was a concern</i> because<MG1223> of the false<MG5569> brothers<MG5569> secretly<MG3920> brought<MG3920> in, who had sneaked<MG3920> in<MG3920> to spy<MG2684> on<MG2684> our freedom<MG1657> which<MG3739> we have<MG2192> in Christ<MG5547> Jesus<MG2424>, in<MG2443> order<MG2443> to<MG2443> enslave<MG2615> us. <span class="reftext"><a href="/galatians/2-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>But we did not yield<MG1502> in subjection<MG5292> to them, even<MG3761> for an hour<MG5610>, so<MG2443> that<MG2443> the truth<MG225> of the gospel<MG2098> would remain<MG1265> with you. <span class="reftext"><a href="/galatians/2-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>But from those<MG3588> who <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>were of considerable<MG5100> repute<MG1380> (what<MG3697> they were makes<MG1308> no<MG3762> difference<MG1308> to me; God<MG2316> shows<MG2983> no<MG3756> favoritism<MG4383>)—well<MG1063>, those<MG3588> who were of repute<MG1380> contributed<MG4323> nothing<MG3762> to me. <span class="reftext"><a href="/galatians/2-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>But on the contrary<MG5121>, seeing<MG3708> that I had been entrusted<MG4100> with the gospel<MG2098> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>to the uncircumcised<MG203>, just<MG2531a> as<MG2531a> Peter<MG4074> <i>had been</i> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>to the circumcised<MG4061> <span class="reftext"><a href="/galatians/2-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>(for He who was at work<MG1754> for Peter<MG4074> in <i>his</i> apostleship<MG651> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>to the circumcised<MG4061> was at work<MG1754> for me also<MG2532> to the Gentiles<MG1484>), <span class="reftext"><a href="/galatians/2-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>and recognizing<MG1097> the grace<MG5485> that had been given<MG1325> to me, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>James<MG2385> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>Cephas<MG2786> and John<MG2491>, who were reputed<MG1380> to be pillars<MG4769>, gave<MG1325> to me and Barnabas<MG921> the right<MG1188> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>hand<MG1188> of fellowship<MG2842>, so<MG2443> that<MG2443> we <i>might</i> <i>go</i> to the Gentiles<MG1484>, and they to the circumcised<MG4061>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/galatians/2-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span><i>They</i> only<MG3440> <i>asked</i> us to remember<MG3421> the poor<MG4434>—the very<MG846> thing<MG846> I also<MG2532> was eager<MG4704> to do<MG4160>. <p class="hdg">Peter (Cephas) Opposed by Paul</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/galatians/2-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>But when<MG3753> Cephas<MG2786> came<MG2064> to Antioch<MG490>, I opposed<MG436> him to his face<MG4383>, because<MG3754> he <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>stood condemned<MG2607>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/galatians/2-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>For prior<MG4253> to the coming<MG2064> of some<MG5100> men<MG5100> from <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>James<MG2385>, he used to eat<MG4906> with the Gentiles<MG1484>; but when<MG3753> they came<MG2064>, he <i>began</i> to withdraw<MG5288> and separate<MG873> himself<MG1438>, fearing<MG5399> those from the circumcision<MG4061>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/galatians/2-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>The rest<MG3062> of the Jews<MG2453> joined<MG4942> him in<MG4942> hypocrisy<MG4942>, with<MG5620> the<MG5620> result<MG5620> that<MG5620> even<MG2532> Barnabas<MG921> was carried<MG4879> away<MG4879> by their hypocrisy<MG5272>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/galatians/2-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>But when<MG3753> I saw<MG3708> that they were not <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>straightforward<MG3716> about<MG4314> the truth<MG225> of the gospel<MG2098>, I said<MG3004> to Cephas<MG2786> in<MG1715> the<MG1715> presence<MG1715> of all<MG3956>, “If<MG1487> you, being<MG5225> a Jew<MG2453>, live<MG2198> like<MG1483> the Gentiles<MG1483> and not like<MG2452> the Jews<MG2452>, how<MG4459> <i>is it that</i> you compel<MG315> the Gentiles<MG1484> to live<MG2450> like<MG2450> Jews<MG2450>?<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span> <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/galatians/2-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>“We <i>are</i> Jews<MG2453> by nature<MG5449> and not sinners<MG268> from the Gentiles<MG1484>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/galatians/2-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>nevertheless<MG1161>, knowing<MG3609a> that a person<MG444> is not justified<MG1344> by works<MG2041> of <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>the Law<MG3551> but through<MG1223> faith<MG4102> in Christ<MG5547> Jesus<MG2424>, even<MG2532> we have believed<MG4100> in Christ<MG5547> Jesus<MG2424>, so<MG2443> that<MG2443> we may be justified<MG1344> by faith<MG4102> in Christ<MG5547> and not by works<MG2041> of <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>the Law<MG3551>;
