He answered and said to him: You say it. <A name="5"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>Pilate said to the chief priests and to the multitudes: I find no fault in this man. <A name="6"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>But they became the more urgent, and said: He excites the people, teaching throughout the whole of Judea, be ginning from Galilee to this place.<p> <A name="7"></a><p class="hdg">Jesus before Herod<p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>When Pilate heard of Galilee, he asked if the man was a Galilean.<CM><p> <A name="8"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>And when he learned that he belonged to the dominion of Herod, he sent him to Herod, who was at that time in Jerusalem.<p> <A name="9"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>When Herod saw Jesus, he rejoiced greatly; for he had, for a long time, desired to see him, because he had heard many things of him; and he hoped to see some sign done by him. <A name="10"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>And he questioned him concerning many things; but he made him no answer. <A name="11"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>And the chief priests and the scribes stood by, and vehemently accused him. <A name="12"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>But Herod and his guards treated him with contempt; and having mocked him, and put on him a gaudy robe, he sent him back to Pilate. <A name="13"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>And on the same day, Pilate and Herod became friends to each other; for, before this, they had been at enmity the one toward the other.<CM><p> <A name="14"></a><p class="hdg">The Crowd Chooses Barabbas<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/27.htm#15">Matthew 27:15–23</a>; <a href ="../mark/15.htm#6">Mark 15:6–11</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>And Pilate called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people, <A name="15"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>and said to them: You have brought to me this man as one that turns the people away; and behold, I have examined him before you, and have found in this man no fault, with respect to the things of which you accuse him; <A name="16"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>nor indeed did Herod; for I sent you to him, and behold, nothing worthy of death has been done by him. <A name=""></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>I will, therefore, chastise him, and release him.<CM> <A name="18"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-16.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>For it was necessary that he should release to them one at the feast.<p> <A name="19"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>And the whole multitude cried out, saying: Away with this man, and release to us Barabbas. <A name="20"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>He, for a certain seditious movement that had been made in the city, and for murder, had been thrown into prison. <A name="21"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>Therefore Pilate, desiring to release Jesus, again called to them. <A name="22"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>But they answered, saying: Crucify, crucify him. <A name="23"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>He said to them the third time: Why, what evil has he done? I have found nothing in him worthy of death. I will, therefore, chastise him, and release him. <A name="24"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>But they were urgent with loud voices, demanding that he should be crucified. And their voices, and those of the chief priests, prevailed. <A name="25"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>And Pilate gave sentence that it should be as they demanded. <A name="26"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>And he released him that for a seditious movement, and for murder, had been thrown into prison, whom they demanded; but Jesus, he delivered up to their will.<CM><p> <A name="27"></a><p class="hdg">The Crucifixion<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/27.htm#32">Matthew 27:32–44</a>; <a href ="../mark/15.htm#21">Mark 15:21–32</a>; <a href ="../john/19.htm#16">John 19:16–27</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>And as they led him away, they laid hold of Simon, a certain Cyrenian, who was coming from the country, and on him they laid the cross, that he might carry it after Jesus.<p> <A name="28"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>And there followed him a great number of the people, and of women that bewailed and lamented him. <A name="29"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>But Jesus turned, and said to them, Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. <A name="30"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>For, behold, the days are coming in which they will say, Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bore, and the breasts that never gave suck. <A name="31"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>Then shall they begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us; and to the hills, Cover us. <A name="32"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>For, if they do these things in the green tree, what shall be done in the dry?<CM><p> <A name="33"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>And two others, who were evil-doers, were led out to be put to death with him.<p> <A name="34"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>And when they came to the place called Skull, they there crucified him and the evil-doers; one on the right, and the other on the left. <A name="35"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>And Jesus said: Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do. And dividing his clothing into parts, they cast lots. <A name="36"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>And the people stood and looked on. And the rulers, with them scoffed at him, saying: He saved others, let him save himself if he is the Christ, the chosen of God. <A name="37"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>The soldiers also derided him, coming to him and offering him vinegar, <A name="38"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>and saying: If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself. <A name="39"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span>And a superscription was also written over him in Greek and in Roman and in Hebrew letters, THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.<CM><p> <A name="40"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-39.htm"><b>39</b></a></span>And one of the evil-doers that were hanged reviled him, saying: If you are the Christ, save yourself and us. <A name="41"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-40.htm"><b>40</b></a></span>But the other answering, rebuked him, saying: Do you not fear God, since you are in the same condemnation? <A name="42"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-41.htm"><b>41</b></a></span>And we justly; for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong. <A name="43"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-42.htm"><b>42</b></a></span>And he said to Jesus: remember me, Lord, when thou comest in thy kingdom. <A name="44"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-43.htm"><b>43</b></a></span>And Jesus said to him: Verily I say to you, today you shall be with me in paradise.<CM><p> <A name="45"></a><p class="hdg">The Death of Jesus<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/27.htm#45">Matthew 27:45–56</a>; <a href ="../mark/15.htm#33">Mark 15:33–41</a>; <a href ="../john/19.htm#28">John 19:28–30</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-44.htm"><b>44</b></a></span>And it was about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over the whole land till the ninth hour. <A name="46"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-45.htm"><b>45</b></a></span>And the sun was darkened, and the vail of the temple was rent in the midst. <A name="47"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-46.htm"><b>46</b></a></span>And Jesus cried with a loud voice, and said: Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit.
