<t><p class="indent1">And I will make you serve<MH5647> your enemies<MH340> <t><p class="indent1">In the land<MH776> which<MH834> you do not know<MH3045>; <t><p class="indent1">For you have kindled<MH6919> a fire<MH784> in My anger<MH639> <t><p class="indent1">Which will burn<MH3344> forever<MH5704, 5769>. <poetry><p class="paragraph"><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/17-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>This<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> the LORD<MH3068> says<MH559>: <p class="indent1stline">“Cursed<MH779> is the man<MH1397> who<MH834> trusts<MH982> in mankind<MH120> <t><p class="indent1">And makes<MH7760> flesh<MH1320> his <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>strength<MH2220>, <t><p class="indent1">And whose heart<MH3820> turns<MH5493> away<MH5493> from the LORD<MH3068>. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/17-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>“For he will be like a bush<MH6176> in the desert<MH6160>, <t><p class="indent1">And will not see<MH7200> when<MH3588> prosperity<MH2896b> comes<MH935>, <t><p class="indent1">But will live<MH7931> in<MH7931> stony<MH2788> wastes<MH2788> in the wilderness<MH4057b>, <t><p class="indent1">A land<MH776> of salt<MH4420> that is not inhabited<MH3427>. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/17-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>“Blessed<MH1288> is the man<MH1397> who<MH834> trusts<MH982> in the LORD<MH3068>, <t><p class="indent1">And whose trust<MH4009> is the LORD<MH3068>. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/17-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>“For he will be like a tree<MH6086> planted<MH8362> by the water<MH4325> <t><p class="indent1">That extends<MH7971> its roots<MH8328> by a stream<MH3105>, <t><p class="indent1">And does not fear<MH3372a> when<MH3588> the heat<MH2527> comes<MH935>; <t><p class="indent1">But its leaves<MH5929> will be green<MH7488>, <t><p class="indent1">And it will not be anxious<MH1672> in a year<MH8141> of drought<MH1226>, <t><p class="indent1">Nor<MH3808> cease<MH4185> to yield<MH6213a> fruit<MH6529>. <poetry><p class="paragraph"><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/17-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>“The heart<MH3820> is more<MH4480> deceitful<MH6121a> than<MH4480> all<MH3605> else <t><p class="indent1">And is desperately<MH605> sick<MH605>; <t><p class="indent1">Who<MH4310> can understand<MH3045> it? <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/17-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>“I, the LORD<MH3068>, search<MH2713> the heart<MH3820>, <t><p class="indent1">I test<MH974> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>mind<MH3629>, <t><p class="indent1">To give<MH5414> to each<MH376> person<MH376> according to his ways<MH1870>, <t><p class="indent1">According to the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>results<MH6529> of his deeds<MH4611>. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/17-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>“As a partridge<MH7124> that hatches<MH1716> eggs<MH1716> which it has not laid<MH3205>, <t><p class="indent1"><i>So</i> is a person who makes<MH6213a> a fortune<MH6239>, but unjustly<MH4941, 3808>; <t><p class="indent1">In the middle<MH2677> of his days<MH3117> it will abandon<MH5800a> him, <t><p class="indent1">And in <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>the end<MH319> he will be a fool<MH5036>.” <poetry><p class="paragraph"><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/17-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>A glorious<MH3519b> throne<MH3678> on high<MH4791> from the beginning<MH7223> <t><p class="indent1">Is the place<MH4725> of our sanctuary<MH4720>. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/17-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>LORD<MH3068>, the hope<MH4723a> of Israel<MH3478>, <t><p class="indent1">All<MH3605> who abandon<MH5800a> You will be put<MH954> to<MH954> shame<MH954>. <t><p class="indent1">Those who turn<MH5493> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>away<MH5493> on earth<MH776> will be written<MH3789> down<MH3789>, <t><p class="indent1">Because<MH3588> they have forsaken<MH5800a> the fountain<MH4726> of living<MH2416a> water<MH4325>, <i>that is</i> the LORD<MH3068>. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/17-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Heal<MH7495> me, LORD<MH3068>, and I will be healed<MH7495>; <t><p class="indent1">Save<MH3467> me and I will be saved<MH3467>, <t><p class="indent1">For You are my praise<MH8416>. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/17-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Look<MH2009>, they keep saying<MH559> to me, <p class="indent1stline">“Where<MH346> is the word<MH1697> of the LORD<MH3068>? <t><p class="indent1">Let it come<MH935> now<MH4994>!” <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/17-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>But as for me, I have not hurried<MH213> away from <i>being</i> a shepherd<MH7462a> <i>following</i> after<MH310> You, <t><p class="indent1">Nor<MH3808> have I longed<MH183> for the disastrous<MH605> day<MH3117>; <t><p class="indent1">You Yourself<MH859> know<MH3045> that the utterance<MH4161> of my lips<MH8193> <t><p class="indent1">Was in Your presence<MH6440>. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/17-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>Do not be a terror<MH4288> to me; <t><p class="indent1">You are my refuge<MH4268> in a day<MH3117> of disaster<MH7463a>. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/17-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>Let those who persecute<MH7291> me be put<MH954> to<MH954> shame<MH954>, but as for me, let me not be put<MH954> to<MH954> shame<MH954>; <t><p class="indent1">Let them be dismayed<MH2865>, but let me not be dismayed<MH2865>. <t><p class="indent1">Bring<MH935> on them a day<MH3117> of disaster<MH7463a>, <t><p class="indent1">And crush<MH7665> them with double<MH4932> destruction<MH7670>! <p class="hdg">The Sabbath Must Be Kept</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/17-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>This<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> the LORD<MH3068> said<MH559> to me: “Go<MH1980> and stand<MH5975> at the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>public<MH1121, 5971a> gate<MH8179>, through which<MH834> the kings<MH4428> of Judah<MH3063> come<MH935> in<MH935> and go<MH3318> out<MH3318>, as well as at all<MH3605> the gates<MH8179> of Jerusalem<MH3389>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/17-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>and say<MH559> to them, ‘Listen<MH8085> to the word<MH1697> of the LORD<MH3068>, you kings<MH4428> of Judah<MH3063>, and all<MH3605> Judah<MH3063>, and all<MH3605> inhabitants<MH3427> of Jerusalem<MH3389> who come<MH935> in<MH935> through these<MH428> gates<MH8179>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/17-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>This<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> the LORD<MH3068> says<MH559>: “Take<MH8104> care<MH8104> for yourselves<MH5315>, and do not carry<MH5375> <i>any</i> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>load<MH4853a> on the Sabbath<MH7676> day<MH3117> or bring<MH935> <i>anything</i> in<MH935> through the gates<MH8179> of Jerusalem<MH3389>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/17-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>You shall not bring<MH3318> a load<MH4853a> out<MH3318> of your houses<MH1004> on the Sabbath<MH7676> day<MH3117> nor<MH3808> do<MH6213a> any<MH3605> work<MH4399>, but keep<MH6942> the Sabbath<MH7676> day<MH3117> holy<MH6942>, just<MH3512c> as<MH3512c> I commanded<MH6680> your <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>forefathers<MH1>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/17-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>Yet they did not listen<MH8085> or incline<MH5186> their ears<MH241>, but stiffened<MH7185> their necks<MH6203> so as not to listen<MH8085> or accept<MH3947> discipline<MH4148>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/17-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>“But it will come<MH1961> about<MH1961>, if<MH518> you give<MH8085> your attention<MH8085> to Me,” declares<MH5002> the LORD<MH3068>, “to bring<MH935> no<MH1115> load<MH4853a> in<MH935> through the gates<MH8179> of this<MH2088> city<MH5892b> on the Sabbath<MH7676> day<MH3117>, but to keep<MH6942> the Sabbath<MH7676> day<MH3117> holy<MH6942> by doing<MH6213a> no<MH1115, 3605> work<MH4399> on it, <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/17-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>then there will come<MH935> in<MH935> through the gates<MH8179> of this<MH2088> city<MH5892b> kings<MH4428> and officials<MH8269> sitting<MH3427> on the throne<MH3678> of David<MH1732>, riding<MH7392> in chariots<MH7393> and on horses<MH5483b>, they and their officials<MH8269>, the men<MH376> of Judah<MH3063> and the inhabitants<MH3427> of Jerusalem<MH3389>, and this<MH2088> city<MH5892b> will be inhabited<MH3427> forever<MH5769>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/17-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>They will come<MH935> in<MH935> from the cities<MH5892b> of Judah<MH3063> and from the areas<MH5439> surrounding<MH5439> Jerusalem<MH3389>, from the land<MH776> of Benjamin<MH1144>, from the lowland<MH8219>, from the hill<MH2022> country<MH2022>, and from the Negev<MH5045>, bringing<MH935> burnt<MH5930a> offerings<MH5930a>, sacrifices<MH2077>, grain offerings<MH4503>, and frankincense<MH3828>, and bringing<MH935> sacrifices<MH8426> of<MH8426> thanksgiving<MH8426> to the house<MH1004> of the LORD<MH3068>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/17-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>But if<MH518> you do not listen<MH8085> to Me, to keep<MH6942> the Sabbath<MH7676> day<MH3117> holy<MH6942> by not carrying<MH5375> a load<MH4853a> and coming<MH935> in<MH935> through the gates<MH8179> of Jerusalem<MH3389> on the Sabbath<MH7676> day<MH3117>, then I will set<MH3341> fire<MH784> to its gates<MH8179>, and it will devour<MH398> the palaces<MH759> of Jerusalem<MH3389> and not go<MH3518> out<MH3518>.”’”<A name="fn"></a></p><br /><br /><span class="footnotesbot">[a]</span> <span class="fnverse">1</span> As in ancient versions;
