It is a term that appears in various contexts, often highlighting God's power to restore individuals and nations to a state of wholeness and well-being.

Old Testament Usage

In the Old Testament, the idea of recovery is frequently associated with physical healing and the restoration of health. For instance, in 2 Kings 5:14, we read about Naaman, the commander of the army of the king of Aram, who was healed of leprosy after following the prophet Elisha's instructions: "So he went down and dipped himself in the Jordan seven times, according to the word of the man of God, and his flesh was restored and became like that of a young boy."

The theme of recovery also extends to the restoration of fortunes and the return from exile. In Jeremiah 30:17, God promises the restoration of Israel: "But I will restore you to health and heal your wounds,’ declares the LORD, ‘because they called you an outcast, Zion for whom no one cares.’"

New Testament Usage

In the New Testament, recovery is often linked to the ministry of Jesus Christ, who healed the sick and restored the broken. In Mark 8:25, Jesus heals a blind man: "Once again Jesus placed His hands on the man’s eyes, and when he opened them his sight was restored, and he could see everything clearly."

The concept of recovery is also spiritual, referring to the redemption and restoration of sinners. In Luke 19:10, Jesus states His mission: "For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost." This recovery is not merely physical but involves a comprehensive restoration of the individual to a right relationship with God.

Theological Implications

Theologically, recovery in the Bible underscores God's sovereignty and compassion. It reflects His desire to restore creation to its intended state, free from the corruption of sin and death. The process of recovery is often initiated by faith and obedience, as seen in the healing miracles of Jesus, where individuals' faith played a crucial role in their restoration.

Moreover, recovery is a foretaste of the ultimate restoration that will occur at the end of times, as described in Revelation 21:4, where God will wipe away every tear, and there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain.

Practical Application

For believers, the biblical concept of recovery offers hope and encouragement. It assures them of God's ability to restore what has been lost or broken, whether it be health, relationships, or spiritual vitality. It calls Christians to trust in God's promises and to seek His intervention in times of need, knowing that He is both willing and able to bring about recovery and renewal.
Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary
1. In the former sense it is in the Old Testament the translation of natsal, "to snatch away" (Judges 11:26 1 Samuel 30:8, 22; in Hosea 2:9, the Revised Version (British and American) "pluck away"); also of shubh (Qal and Hiphil 1 Samuel 30:19 the King James Version; 2 Samuel 8:3, etc.), and of various other words in single instances. In 2 Kings 5:3, 6, 7, 11, "to restore to health" is 'acaph.
