The group was split into two, with half reading a story about blaming a workplace mistake on a colleague while the other group “read a similar story which ended in them taking responsibility for the mistake,” according to The Independent.
\n\n\n
In the second experiment, participants wrote about a time they acted immorally and then were asked “to take an unsolvable IQ test in order to test if intuitive individuals would cheat less,” according to The Independent.
\n\n\n
Participants were then told to grade their own papers, with knowledge that the top 10 performers would get a lottery ticket at the end of the study. In total, 23 percent ended up cheating.
\n\n\n
“Our second experiment showed that people who tend to rely on their gut feelings are less likely to cheat after reflecting on a time when they behaved immorally,” University of Missouri’s Sarah Ward told The Independent. “We feel this is because people try to compensate for past bad behavior by acting morally in the present, and that this tendency to try to compensate for past actions may be especially pronounced among people who rely on intuition.”
\n\n\n
The researchers hope this study will help people in workplaces and schools figure out better ways to curb cheating.
\n\n\n
And that’s not a bad idea, given that cheating has seen an increase in the United States, according to ABC News. A 2002 survey of 12,000 high school students found that 74 percent of students admitted to cheating on a test that year, ABC reported. A larger survey found that more than half of all high school students admitted to cheating on a test one or more times a year.
\n\n\n
Students often cheat because they feel school has become so systematic and that it’s more important to pass a test and get a good grade than to learn material, ABC reported.
\n\n\n
“The bottom line is not just that many students have more temptation — but they seem to have a whole new mindset,” according to ABC.
\n\n\n
Other students don’t see a problem with cheating, according to an essay by professor Michael Bishop of the Iowa State University department of philosophy and religion.
\n\n\n
“Get below the surface, and you'll find an implicit attitude that says: everybody cheats, it doesn't really hurt anybody, and this material isn't important to me,” he wrote in 1998. “There is seldom a deep understanding of why cheating is wrong.”
\n\n\n

Cheating has only increased with the rise of the Internet, where students can find [past exams, essays and homework assignments](http://www.educationworld.com/a_admin/admin/admin375.shtml), according to Education World.\n\n
That’s why teachers have come up with a number of different strategies to help curb cheating, including appealing to a student’s personal integrity and moral beliefs, Education World reported.
\n\n\n
\"I try to prevent cheating in my classes from the very beginning of the school year by discussing personal integrity and then going over expectations and logical consequences for failure to abide by class policy concerning cheating,\" LeRon Ware, a science teacher in Utah, told Education World.
\n\n\n
Some teachers will also require a heavy amount of deadlines so that students are constantly under pressure to finish their assignments, leaving them little time to cheat or look for answers elsewhere, Education World reported.
\n\n\n
\"In the end, no foolproof approach to preventing or exposing cheating exists,\" Education World concluded. \"But teachers can structure assignments and classrooms to discourage cheating and ensure its negative consequences, always remaining careful to accuse only those students who have clearly done wrong.\"
\n\n\n
For more on cheating:
\n\n\n
What makes us lie and cheat and what we can do about it
\n\n\n
How China is catching cheaters on college access exams
\n\n\n
When standardized testing goes wrong: Atlanta teachers falsified test scores to meet goals
\n\n\n
Herb Scribner is a writer for Deseret News National.
