The included talks revolve around the idea of a 'second major turn in biosemiotics' following the more 'Peircean inspired biology' turn of the last few decades of the 20th century, and reconciling its findings with other theoretical foundations of general semiotics, such as structural semiology. The aesthetic and textual concerns of the latter invite commentary from the biosemiotic perspective. Semiosalong is the afterhours Tartu semiotic salon, active since 2011. 2 Semiosalong went fully online in autumn of 2020, but as conditions allowed, it returned for a fully in-person special session in the summer of 2021. The included talks revolve around the idea of a 'second major turn in biosemiotics' following the more 'Peircean inspired biology' turn of the last few decades of the 20th century, and reconciling its findings with other theoretical foundations of general semiotics, such as structural semiology. The aesthetic and textual concerns of the latter invite commentary from the biosemiotic perspective. Semiosalong is the afterhours Tartu semiotic salon, active since 2011. 2 Semiosalong went fully online in autumn of 2020, but as conditions allowed, it returned for a fully in-person special session in the summer of 2021. The event titled "Funktionskreis and the biosemiotic signifieds" was held on 13 July, 2021, and was intended as a pre-gathering seminar for the Stockholm Gatherings in Biosemiotics 2021 that took place on 26-29 July. Or, as it was written in the introduction to the 17th Gatherings in Biosemiotics in Lausanne, “biosemiotics is [...] the study of meaning-making and its consequences in living systems, and much of its focus is on investigating and understanding pre-linguistic sign processes in both humans and other organisms”. Biology, on the one hand, has an important and impressive history of studying the systematicity of nature, as it is exhibited in the analyses of the genetic, physiological and morphogenetic processes of living systems. Yet biology, at the same time, must also certainly recognize that it is likewise the study of the systematicity of freedom, in as much as its object of study is the phenomenon of life itself. And so biology, understood as biosemiotics, studies life’s capacity for aboutness, for establishing mediated and arbitrary relationships that result in the creation of novelty, for making choices, and for the ongoing exploration of possibility. The world meetings on biosemiotics – Gatherings in Biosemiotics – have been taking place annually since 2001. The first twelve years of these conferences was described in a volume of 2012, while the current volume covers the meetings from 2012 to 2020. In addition to the accounts and programs of these events, and including over sixty contributions to the twentieth meeting, the current volume includes review articles, evaluating the work done thus far, and predicting future developments. Both deal with signal and meaning. One difference is that Biosemiotics covers a domain (life) that is less complex that the one addressed by Semiotics (human). We believe that this difference can be used to have Biosemiotics bringing added value to Semiotics. This belief is based on the fact that a theory of meaning is easier to build up for living elements than for humans, and that the results obtained for life can make available some tools for a higher level of complexity. Semiotic has been encountering some difficulties to deliver a scientific theory of meaning that can be efficient at the level of human mind. The obstacles come from our ignorance on the nature of human. As it is true that we do not understand the nature of human mind on a scientific basis. On the other hand, the nature and properties of life are better understood. And we can propose a modelization for a generation of meaningful information in the field of elementary life. Once such a modelization is established, it is possible to look at extending it to the domain of human life. Such an approach on a theory of meaning (begininig in Biosemiotics and aiming at Semiotics), is what we present in this paper. Taking an elementary living element as reference, we introduce the bases of a systemic theory of meaning. Using a simple living system submitted to a constraint, we define a meaningful information, a meaning generator system and some elements related to meaningful information transmission. At this occasion we provide in this editorial introduction a short overview of the most important characteristics, tendencies and figures of the journal Biosemiotics. An agreement to establish the journal was made in 2007 in cooperation between the International Society for Biosemiotics Studies and Springer Science + Business Media, with the first issues appearing in 2008. The agreed aim was to stimulate and communicate research in the field of biosemiotics, and to bring together scholars in biology, semiotics and the humanities with an interest in sign processes in nature. The history of biosemiotics as a discipline can be dated back at least to the 1960’s (for overviews, see Favareau 2010; Kull 1999; Barbieri 2009).
