His presence is noted in several key events, and he is recognized for his support and leadership among the Israelites.

Lineage and Family

Hur is identified as a member of the tribe of Judah. According to 1 Chronicles 2:19, he is the son of Caleb and Ephrathah. This lineage places him within the prominent tribe of Judah, which is significant in the history of Israel. Hur's family is noted for its leadership and influence, as Caleb is a well-known figure for his faithfulness and courage.

Role in the Battle Against the Amalekites

One of the most notable accounts involving Hur is during the battle against the Amalekites at Rephidim. In Exodus 17:10-12 , Hur, along with Aaron, plays a crucial role in supporting Moses. As Joshua leads the Israelites in battle, Moses stands on a hill with the staff of God. When Moses' hands are raised, Israel prevails, but when he lowers them, the Amalekites gain the advantage. To ensure victory, Aaron and Hur support Moses' hands, one on each side, allowing him to keep them steady until sunset. This act of support leads to a decisive victory for Israel.

Leadership Role

Hur is also mentioned in the context of leadership among the Israelites. In Exodus 24:14 , when Moses ascends Mount Sinai to receive the tablets of the Law, he leaves Aaron and Hur in charge of the people, saying, "Wait here for us until we return to you. Aaron and Hur are with you; whoever has a dispute can go to them." This indicates that Hur was entrusted with significant responsibility and authority, highlighting his leadership qualities and the trust Moses placed in him.

Possible Connection to Bezalel

There is a possible connection between Hur and Bezalel, the chief artisan of the Tabernacle. In Exodus 31:2 , Bezalel is described as the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah. This suggests that Hur may be the grandfather of Bezalel, further emphasizing his family's importance in the religious and cultural life of Israel.

Legacy and Significance

Hur's legacy is one of support, leadership, and faithfulness. His actions during the battle against the Amalekites demonstrate the importance of cooperation and support within the community of God's people. By holding up Moses' hands, Hur exemplifies the role of a faithful servant leader, contributing to the success and well-being of the nation. His leadership alongside Aaron during Moses' absence further underscores his reliability and capability as a leader among the Israelites.
Hitchcock's Bible Names Dictionary
Hur
liberty; whiteness; hole
ATS Bible Dictionary
Hur
A chief man among the Hebrews in the desert, associated with Aaron in upholding the hands of Moses at Rephidim, and in supplying his place while on the summit of Sinai, Exodus 17:10; 24:14.

Easton's Bible Dictionary
A hole, as of a viper, etc.
(1.)
