This awakening follows a series of prophecies about the restoration of Israel, suggesting a renewed understanding of God's promises. The context here is significant, as Jeremiah had been delivering messages of both judgment and hope. The act of looking around implies a new perspective or clarity, possibly indicating a shift from despair to hope. This phrase can be connected to other biblical instances where awakening signifies a turning point, such as in <a href="/genesis/28-16.htm">Genesis 28:16</a>, where Jacob awakes from his dream of the ladder reaching to heaven, realizing God's presence and promise.<p><b>My sleep had been most pleasant to me.</b><br>The pleasant sleep symbolizes peace and reassurance, contrasting with the turmoil and distress often associated with Jeremiah's prophetic ministry. In the ancient Near Eastern context, dreams were considered significant, often seen as divine communication. This pleasant sleep could represent the comfort and assurance that comes from trusting in God's future restoration and faithfulness. It echoes the peace that surpasses understanding mentioned in <a href="/philippians/4-7.htm">Philippians 4:7</a>. Theologically, this can be seen as a type of the rest found in Christ, who offers spiritual rest to those who are weary and burdened (<a href="/matthew/11-28.htm">Matthew 11:28-30</a>). The pleasantness of the sleep underscores the hope and joy found in God's promises, even amidst current struggles.<div class="vheading2">Persons / Places / Events</div>1. <b><a href="/topical/j/jeremiah.htm">Jeremiah</a></b><br>The prophet who received this vision from God. By some writers (Rosenmller) they have been referred to Jehovah under the figure of the husband who has dreamt of his wife's return. Others (Ewald) have seen in them a quotation from some well-known psalm or hymn, like <a href="/psalms/17-15.htm" title="As for me, I will behold your face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with your likeness.">Psalm 17:15</a>, indicating that in the golden days to which Jeremiah looked forward there should be freedom even from the evil and dark dreams of a time of peril, so that every man should be able to give thanks for the "sweet" gift of sleep (<a href="/psalms/127-2.htm" title="It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he gives his beloved sleep.">Psalm 127:2</a>). It is, however, far more natural to take them as the prophet's own words. The vision of a restored Israel, such as he paints it in the preceding verses, had come to him in his sleep. (See <a href="/jeremiah/23-28.htm" title="The prophet that has a dream, let him tell a dream; and he that has my word, let him speak my word faithfully. What is the chaff to the wheat? said the LORD.">Jeremiah 23:28</a>; <a href="/joel/2-28.htm" title="And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit on all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:">Joel 2:28</a>, as to this mode of revelation.) And when he woke up there was no sense of bitter disappointment like that of the dreamer described in <a href="/isaiah/29-8.htm" title="It shall even be as when an hungry man dreams, and, behold, he eats; but he wakes, and his soul is empty: or as when a thirsty man dreams, and, behold, he drinks; but he wakes, and, behold, he is faint, and his soul has appetite: so shall the multitude of all the nations be, that fight against mount Zion.">Isaiah 29:8</a>. The promise that came to him when he woke was as distinct and blessed as the dream had been. The "sweet sleep" has its parallel in <a href="/proverbs/3-24.htm" title="When you lie down, you shall not be afraid: yes, you shall lie down, and your sleep shall be sweet.">Proverbs 3:24</a>.<span class= "bld"> . . . <div class="vheading2"><a href="/commentaries/pulpit/jeremiah/31.htm">Pulpit Commentary</a></div><span class="cmt_sub_title">Verse 26.</span> - <span class="cmt_word">Upon this I awaked,</span> etc. Who the speaker is here has been much debated. That Jehovah is meant is not an admissible view. A weak believer may say complainingly, "Why sleepest thou?" but God himself cannot be represented under the image of a sleeper. There seems, however, to be no reason why the prophet should not have used this language. The doubt is whether a real, physical sleep is meant, or merely an ecstatic condition resembling sleep. Hengstenberg decides for the latter. But there is no parallel for sleep in the sense of ecstasy, and, on the other hand, there is evidence enough for dreams as the channels of Divine revelation (<a href="/genesis/31-10.htm">Genesis 31:10, 11</a>; <a href="/1_kings/3-5.htm">1 Kings 3:5</a>; <a href="/1_kings/9-2.htm">1 Kings 9:2</a>; <a href="/joel/2-28.htm">Joel 2:28</a>). As Naegelsbach points out, this is the only unqualifiedly comforting prophecy in the whole book, and may well have left a sweet savour in the prophet's memory. Stern, indeed, was the reality which the moment of his waking brought back to him. <span class="p"><br /><br /></span><span class="versiontext"><a href="/commentaries/jeremiah/31-26.htm">Parallel Commentaries ...</a></span><span class="p"><br /><br /><br /></span><a name="lexicon" id="lexicon"></a><div class="vheading">Hebrew</div><span class="word">At</span><br /><span class="heb">&#1506;&#1463;&#1500;&#1470;</span> <span class="translit">(&#8216;al-)</span><br /><span class="parse">Preposition<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_5921.htm">Strong's 5921: </a> </span><span class="str2">Above, over, upon, against</span><br /><br /><span class="word">this</span><br /><span class="heb">&#1494;&#1465;&#1430;&#1488;&#1514;</span> <span class="translit">(z&#333;&#7791;)</span><br /><span class="parse">Pronoun - feminine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_2063.htm">Strong's 2063: </a> </span><span class="str2">Hereby in it, likewise, the one other, same, she, so much, such deed, that, </span><br /><br /><span class="word">I awoke</span><br /><span class="heb">&#1492;&#1457;&#1511;&#1460;&#1497;&#1510;&#1465;&#1443;&#1514;&#1460;&#1497;</span> <span class="translit">(h&#277;&#183;q&#238;&#183;&#7779;&#333;&#183;&#7791;&#238;)</span><br /><span class="parse">Verb - Hifil - Perfect - first person common singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_6974.htm">Strong's 6974: </a> </span><span class="str2">Arise, be awake, watch </span><br /><br /><span class="word">and looked around.</span><br /><span class="heb">&#1493;&#1464;&#1488;&#1462;&#1512;&#1456;&#1488;&#1462;&#1425;&#1492;</span> <span class="translit">(w&#257;&#183;&#8217;er&#183;&#8217;eh)</span><br /><span class="parse">Conjunctive waw &#124; Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - first person common singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_7200.htm">Strong's 7200: </a> </span><span class="str2">To see</span><br /><br /><span class="word">My sleep</span><br /><span class="heb">&#1493;&#1468;&#1513;&#1473;&#1456;&#1504;&#1464;&#1514;&#1460;&#1430;&#1497;</span> <span class="translit">(&#363;&#183;&#353;&#601;&#183;n&#257;&#183;&#7791;&#238;)</span><br /><span class="parse">Conjunctive waw &#124; Noun - feminine singular construct &#124; first person common singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_8142.htm">Strong's 8142: </a> </span><span class="str2">Sleep</span><br /><br /><span class="word">had been most pleasant to me.</span><br /><span class="heb">&#1506;&#1464;&#1445;&#1512;&#1456;&#1489;&#1464;&#1492;</span> <span class="translit">(&#8216;&#257;&#183;r&#601;&#183;&#7687;&#257;h)</span><br /><span class="parse">Verb - Qal - Perfect - third person feminine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_6149.htm">Strong's 6149: </a> </span><span class="str2">To be sweet or pleasing</span><br /><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><div class="vheading">Links</div><a href="/niv/jeremiah/31-26.htm">Jeremiah 31:26 NIV</a><br /><a href="/nlt/jeremiah/31-26.htm">Jeremiah 31:26 NLT</a><br /><a href="/esv/jeremiah/31-26.htm">Jeremiah 31:26 ESV</a><br /><a href="/nasb/jeremiah/31-26.htm">Jeremiah 31:26 NASB</a><br /><a href="/kjv/jeremiah/31-26.htm">Jeremiah 31:26 KJV</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="//bibleapps.com/jeremiah/31-26.htm">Jeremiah 31:26 BibleApps.com</a><br /><a href="//bibliaparalela.com/jeremiah/31-26.htm">Jeremiah 31:26 Biblia Paralela</a><br /><a href="//holybible.com.cn/jeremiah/31-26.htm">Jeremiah 31:26 Chinese Bible</a><br /><a href="//saintebible.com/jeremiah/31-26.htm">Jeremiah 31:26 French Bible</a><br /><a href="/catholic/jeremiah/31-26.htm">Jeremiah 31:26 Catholic Bible</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="/jeremiah/31-26.htm">OT Prophets: Jeremiah 31:26 On this I awakened and saw (Jer.) </a></div></div></td></tr></table></div><div id="left"><a href="/jeremiah/31-25.htm" onmouseover='lft.src="/leftgif.png"' onmouseout='lft.src="/left.png"' title="Jeremiah 31:25"><img src="/left.png" name="lft" border="0" alt="Jeremiah 31:25" /></a></div><div id="right"><a href="/jeremiah/31-27.htm" onmouseover='rght.src="/rightgif.png"' onmouseout='rght.src="/right.png"' title="Jeremiah 31:27"><img src="/right.png" name="rght" border="0" alt="Jeremiah 31:27" /></a></div><div id="botleft"><a href="#" onmouseover='botleft.src="/botleftgif.png"' onmouseout='botleft.src="/botleft.png"' title="Top of Page"><img src="/botleft.png" name="botleft" border="0" alt="Top of Page" /></a></div><div id="botright"><a href="#" onmouseover='botright.src="/botrightgif.png"' onmouseout='botright.src="/botright.png"' title="Top of Page"><img src="/botright.png" name="botright" border="0" alt="Top of Page" /></a></div><div id="bot"><iframe width="100%" height="1500" scrolling="no" src="/botmenubhnew2.htm" frameborder="0"></iframe></div></td></tr></table></div></body></html>
