In the biblical context, it refers to living a life of integrity and righteousness according to God's commandments. Historically, the Israelites were called to be a people set apart, living in a manner that reflected God's holiness. This phrase emphasizes the importance of moral and ethical conduct, suggesting that those who live in alignment with God's will are the ones who truly walk uprightly. In a conservative Christian perspective, this is a call to live a life that mirrors the teachings of Christ, embodying virtues such as honesty, kindness, and faithfulness.<p><b>enter into peace</b><br />The Hebrew word for peace here is "shalom," which encompasses not just the absence of conflict but a state of completeness, wholeness, and harmony. In the ancient Near Eastern context, peace was a rare and precious commodity, often disrupted by war and strife. The promise of entering into peace is a profound assurance of divine rest and fulfillment. For believers, this peace is not only a future hope but a present reality through faith in Jesus Christ, who is referred to as the Prince of Peace. It signifies a deep, abiding sense of well-being that comes from being reconciled with God.<p><b>they find rest</b><br />The concept of rest, or "nuach" in Hebrew, is deeply rooted in the biblical narrative, beginning with God's rest on the seventh day of creation. It signifies a cessation from labor and a state of tranquility. In the historical context of Israel, rest was often associated with the Promised Land, a place where God's people could dwell securely. For Christians, this rest is ultimately found in Christ, who invites all who are weary to come to Him for rest. It is a spiritual rest that transcends physical circumstances, offering solace and comfort to the soul.<p><b>as they lie in death</b><br />This phrase acknowledges the reality of death, yet frames it in a context of hope and peace. The Hebrew word for death, "mavet," is often seen as the ultimate enemy, but here it is portrayed as a gateway to rest for the righteous. In the ancient world, death was a mysterious and often feared transition, but for those who walk uprightly, it is depicted as a peaceful passage. From a conservative Christian viewpoint, death is not the end but a transition to eternal life with God. The assurance of rest in death reflects the Christian hope of resurrection and eternal life, where believers will experience the fullness of God's peace.<div class="vheading2"><a href="/commentaries/ellicott/isaiah/57.htm">Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers</a></div>(2) <span class= "bld">He shall enter into peace . . .</span>--Notice- able as presenting the brighter side of the dim thoughts of Israel as to the life behind the veil, and so far contrasted with Hezekiah's shrinking fear. Not merely into "stillness" or "silence" (<a href="/psalms/115-17.htm">Psalm 115:17</a>), but into "peace," or, as the word might be rendered (Cheyne), "a state of peace." There is, no doubt, primarily, "<span class="accented">a</span> contrast to the awful troubles which the survivors will have to encounter" (Hengstenberg); but perhaps this contrast is not all that is meant. The "peace" is positive rather than negative, or it would scarcely be a consolation to any one. They shall rest in their beds; or, <span class="accented">upon their beds.</span> This expression seems to imply a consciousness of rest, and so a certain enjoyment of it. Each one walking in his uprightness; rather, <span class="accented">whosoever hath walked uprightly</span>, or <span class="accented">in a straight path</span> (see <a href="/proverbs/4-25.htm">Proverbs 4:25-27</a>). The phrase is an equivalent for "the righteous" of ver. 1, and refers to the life on earth of those who have gone down into silence, not to their life after they have reached the silent shore. Of that life the evangelical prophet is not commissioned to give us any information. <span class="p"><br /><br /></span><span class="versiontext"><a href="/commentaries/isaiah/57-2.htm">Parallel Commentaries ...</a></span><span class="p"><br /><br /><br /></span><a name="lexicon" id="lexicon"></a><div class="vheading">Hebrew</div><span class="word">Those who walk</span><br /><span class="heb">הֹלֵ֖ךְ</span> <span class="translit">(hō·lêḵ)</span><br /><span class="parse">Verb - Qal - Participle - masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_1980.htm">Strong's 1980: </a> </span><span class="str2">To go, come, walk</span><br /><br /><span class="word">uprightly</span><br /><span class="heb">נְכֹחֽוֹ׃</span> <span class="translit">(nə·ḵō·ḥōw)</span><br /><span class="parse">Adjective - masculine singular construct | third person masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_5228.htm">Strong's 5228: </a> </span><span class="str2">Straightforward, equitable, correct, integrity</span><br /><br /><span class="word">enter</span><br /><span class="heb">יָב֣וֹא</span> <span class="translit">(yā·ḇō·w)</span><br /><span class="parse">Verb - Qal - Imperfect - third person masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_935.htm">Strong's 935: </a> </span><span class="str2">To come in, come, go in, go</span><br /><br /><span class="word">into peace;</span><br /><span class="heb">שָׁל֔וֹם</span> <span class="translit">(šā·lō·wm)</span><br /><span class="parse">Noun - masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_7965.htm">Strong's 7965: </a> </span><span class="str2">Safe, well, happy, friendly, welfare, health, prosperity, peace</span><br /><br /><span class="word">they find rest,</span><br /><span class="heb">יָנ֖וּחוּ</span> <span class="translit">(yā·nū·ḥū)</span><br /><span class="parse">Verb - Qal - Imperfect - third person masculine plural<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_5117.htm">Strong's 5117: </a> </span><span class="str2">To rest, settle down</span><br /><br /><span class="word">lying down in death.</span><br /><span class="heb">מִשְׁכְּבוֹתָ֑ם</span> <span class="translit">(miš·kə·ḇō·w·ṯām)</span><br /><span class="parse">Noun - masculine plural construct | third person masculine plural<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_4904.htm">Strong's 4904: </a> </span><span class="str2">Place of lying, a couch, act of lying</span><br /><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><div class="vheading">Links</div><a href="/niv/isaiah/57-2.htm">Isaiah 57:2 NIV</a><br /><a href="/nlt/isaiah/57-2.htm">Isaiah 57:2 NLT</a><br /><a href="/esv/isaiah/57-2.htm">Isaiah 57:2 ESV</a><br /><a href="/nasb/isaiah/57-2.htm">Isaiah 57:2 NASB</a><br /><a href="/kjv/isaiah/57-2.htm">Isaiah 57:2 KJV</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="//bibleapps.com/isaiah/57-2.htm">Isaiah 57:2 BibleApps.com</a><br /><a href="//bibliaparalela.com/isaiah/57-2.htm">Isaiah 57:2 Biblia Paralela</a><br /><a href="//holybible.com.cn/isaiah/57-2.htm">Isaiah 57:2 Chinese Bible</a><br /><a href="//saintebible.com/isaiah/57-2.htm">Isaiah 57:2 French Bible</a><br /><a href="/catholic/isaiah/57-2.htm">Isaiah 57:2 Catholic Bible</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="/isaiah/57-2.htm">OT Prophets: Isaiah 57:2 He enters into peace (Isa Isi Is)</a></div></div></td></tr></table></div><div id="left"><a href="/isaiah/57-1.htm" onmouseover='lft.src="/leftgif.png"' onmouseout='lft.src="/left.png"' title="Isaiah 57:1"><img src="/left.png" name="lft" border="0" alt="Isaiah 57:1" /></a></div><div id="right"><a href="/isaiah/57-3.htm" onmouseover='rght.src="/rightgif.png"' onmouseout='rght.src="/right.png"' title="Isaiah 57:3"><img src="/right.png" name="rght" border="0" alt="Isaiah 57:3" /></a></div><div id="botleft"><a href="#" onmouseover='botleft.src="/botleftgif.png"' onmouseout='botleft.src="/botleft.png"' title="Top of Page"><img src="/botleft.png" name="botleft" border="0" alt="Top of Page" /></a></div><div id="botright"><a href="#" onmouseover='botright.src="/botrightgif.png"' onmouseout='botright.src="/botright.png"' title="Top of Page"><img src="/botright.png" name="botright" border="0" alt="Top of Page" /></a></div><div id="bot"><iframe width="100%" height="1500" scrolling="no" src="/botmenubhnew2.htm" frameborder="0"></iframe></div></td></tr></table></div></body></html>
