many societies place on youth, it’s a difficult time to be young. In May 2022, the McKinsey Health Institute (MHI) surveyed 6,000 Generation Z respondents in ten European countries to understand their perspectives on mental health, particularly in the context of an unprecedented moment of global and regional crises.<span class="FootNote_footnote-holder__tjRqy"><a aria-label="footnote" href="javascript:void(0);" class="FootNote_footnote-wrapper__AIRwL undefined FootNote_bottom__9aoSL FootNote_inactive__VZfCp" aria-describedby="42a6bea9-445c-4f03-bfda-11c25051fc5b"><sup class="FootNote_footnotesup__e73z_">1</sup><span class="FootNote_notch-wrapper__b_5NS"><span class="FootNote_notch__omKtY"></span></span><span class="FootNote_tooltip__QtrbA mdc-u-mt-2"><span class="FootNote_footnote-content__r2OVl"><span id="42a6bea9-445c-4f03-bfda-11c25051fc5b" aria-hidden="true" data-module-theme="light" class="FootNote_footnote-text__VjKgO mck-u-links-inline">Generation Z ages can vary, with some analyses including ages as young as nine. In this article, we focus on those between the ages of 18 and 24, and define millennials as landing between ages 25 and 40.</span></span></span></a></span> What MHI found was consistent with what respondents in the <a href="/industries/healthcare/our-insights/addressing-the-unprecedented-behavioral-health-challenges-facing-generation-z">United States said</a> in January 2022: Gen Z reports poorer mental health when compared with older generations, including millennials. At play are specific external triggers: nearly half of Gen Z respondents cite a high level of distress due to climate change, while 41 percent list distress related to the war in Ukraine. It turns a “whole” person into someone who feels “broken” or ashamed.</li> <li>Social stigma (which is sometimes referred to as public stigma) is the negative attitude of society toward a particular group of people. In the case of behavioral-health conditions, it creates an environment in which those with such conditions are discredited, feared, and isolated.</li> <li>Structural stigma (including workplace stigma) refers to system-level discrimination—such as cultural norms, institutional practices, and healthcare policies not at parity with other health conditions—that constrains resources and opportunities and therefore impairs well-being.</li> </ul></div></div></div></div></div></div> <p>Gen Z respondents, however, appear to have a more nuanced framework around the stigma surrounding mental illness.<span class="FootNote_footnote-holder__tjRqy"><a aria-label="footnote" href="javascript:void(0);" class="FootNote_footnote-wrapper__AIRwL undefined FootNote_bottom__9aoSL FootNote_inactive__VZfCp" aria-describedby="f96f2ee9-bf11-4222-bbbd-2b6b315135c9"><sup class="FootNote_footnotesup__e73z_">2</sup><span class="FootNote_notch-wrapper__b_5NS"><span class="FootNote_notch__omKtY"></span></span><span class="FootNote_tooltip__QtrbA mdc-u-mt-2"><span class="FootNote_footnote-content__r2OVl"><span id="f96f2ee9-bf11-4222-bbbd-2b6b315135c9" aria-hidden="true" data-module-theme="light" class="FootNote_footnote-text__VjKgO mck-u-links-inline">In behavioral health, “stigma” is defined as the perception of shame, prejudice, or discrimination toward people with mental-health or substance use conditions.</span></span></span></a></span> In Europe, Gen Z seems less inclined to stigmatize or discriminate against people with mental illness, even though they do stigmatize themselves. Responses were garnered from 10,273 people, including 6,247 Gen Z individuals between 18 and 24 years old. Individuals from four other generations were also surveyed: 1,229 millennials (25–40 years old), 1,300 Gen Xers (41–56 years old), 1,391 baby boomers (57–75 years old), and 106 from the Silent Generation (76–93 years old).</p> <p>This consumer insights survey focused on how respondents—mainly Gen Z—were feeling at a point in time (winter/spring 2022). It will be the work of our future research to identify which sentiments are more closely related to developmental stage (that is, adolescence) and evolve as Gen Z ages versus those that are specific to their generation (that is, individuals born in 1997 through 2012). The survey was based on a representative sample of individuals who have access to the internet.</p></div></div></div></div></div></div> <p>The personal, professional, and educational networks serving Gen Z in Europe can benefit from a better understanding of specific challenges facing this generation. In the <a href="/industries/healthcare/our-insights/addressing-the-unprecedented-behavioral-health-challenges-facing-generation-z">US Gen Z survey</a>, one in four respondents reported being emotionally distressed. Roughly half say that they would be comfortable talking to a friend about their mental-health conditions.</p> <p>Less than a third of all respondents report being comfortable talking about their mental-health conditions with colleagues or work supervisors; for Gen Z, the number is even lower. In May 2022, the McKinsey Health Institute (MHI) surveyed 6,000 Generation Z respondents in ten European countries to understand their perspectives on mental health, particularly in the context of an unprecedented moment of global and regional crises.[[footnote 1]] What MHI found was consistent with what respondents in the \u003ca href=\"/industries/healthcare/our-insights/addressing-the-unprecedented-behavioral-health-challenges-facing-generation-z\"\u003eUnited States said\u003c/a\u003e\u0026nbsp;in January 2022: Gen Z reports poorer mental health when compared with older generations, including millennials. At play are specific external triggers: nearly half of Gen Z respondents cite a high level of distress due to climate change, while 41 percent list distress related to the war in Ukraine. More than a fourth said COVID-19 caused them high distress.\u003c/p\u003e\n[[Sidebar 1]]\n\u003cp\u003eGen Z respondents, however, appear to have a more nuanced framework around the stigma surrounding mental illness.[[footnote 2]] In Europe, Gen Z seems less inclined to stigmatize or discriminate against people with mental illness, even though they do stigmatize themselves. Negative attitudes around mental illnesses, aimed at oneself or others, can prevent people from discussing their mental-health conditions (for more on stigma, see sidebar \u0026ldquo;Defining stigma\u0026rdquo;).\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cbr /\u003e\n[[Sidebar 2]]\n\u003cp\u003eThe personal, professional, and educational networks serving Gen Z in Europe can benefit from a better understanding of specific challenges facing this generation. Responses were garnered from 10,273 people, including 6,247 Gen Z individuals between 18 and 24 years old.
