<a href ="../mark/4.htm">Mark 4:1–20</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>And when a great multitude was gathered together, of those that came to Him out of every city, He spake a parable <i>saying,</i> <A name="6"></a><span class="red"><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span><FR>A sower went out to sow his seed, and as he was sowing, some fell by the way-<Fr><i>side,</i><FR> and was trodden down, and the birds of the air devoured it.<Fr> <A name="7"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span><FR>And some fell upon stony ground, and as soon as it sprung up, it withered away, because it had no moisture.<Fr> <A name="8"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span><FR>And some fell among thorns, and the thorns sprang up with <Fr><i>it</i><FR> and choked it.<Fr> <A name="9"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span><FR>But some fell on good ground, and sprang up and yielded fruit an hundred-fold.<Fr> And as He said these things He cried out, <FR>"He that hath ears to hear, let him hear."<Fr><p> <A name="10"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>And his disciples asked Him, what might be <i>the meaning of</i> this parable. <A name="11"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>And He said, <FR>To you it is granted to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God: but <Fr><i>I</i><FR> <Fr><i>speak</i><FR> to others in parables, that <Fr><i>in</i><FR> seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand.<Fr><p> <A name="12"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span><FR>Now this is <Fr><i>the meaning of</i><FR> the parable, The seed is the word of God:<Fr> <A name="13"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span><FR>and those by the way-<Fr><i>side,</i><FR> are such as hear <Fr><i>indeed; but</i><FR> then the devil cometh and taketh away the word from their hearts, least they should believe and be saved.<Fr> <A name="14"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span><FR>And those on stony-ground <Fr><i>are</i><FR> such as when they hear, receive the word with joy; but have no root, and <Fr><i>so</i><FR> believe <Fr><i>only</i><FR> for a while, and in <Fr><i>the</i><FR> time of trial fall away.<Fr> <A name="15"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span><FR>And that which fell among thorns, are those who when they have heard <Fr><i>the word</i><FR> go away and are choked with <Fr><i>the</i><FR> cares and riches, and pleasures of life, and bring no fruit to perfection.<Fr> <A name="16"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span><FR>But that on the good ground, are those who having heard the word, retain <Fr><i>it</i><FR> in a good and honest heart, and bring forth fruit with patience.<Fr><p> <A name="17"></a><p class="hdg">The Lesson of the Lamp<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../mark/4.htm#21">Mark 4:21–25</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span><FR>No man when he hath lighted a candle covereth it with a vessel, or putteth it under a couch; but setteth it on a candlestick, that they who come in may see the light.<Fr> <A name="18"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span><FR>(For there is nothing secret, that shall not be made manifest: nor any thing concealed, which shall not be <Fr><i>made</i><FR> known and come to light.)<Fr> <A name="19"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span><FR>Take heed therefore how ye hear: for whosoever <Fr><i>improveth what he</i><FR> hath, to him shall <Fr><i>more</i><FR> be given; <a href ="../mark/4.htm#35">Mark 4:35–41</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>And it came to pass on one of the days <i>that</i> He went into a ship, Himself and his disciples, and He said to them, <FR>Let us go over to the other side of the lake.<Fr> <A name="24"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>And they launched forth: but as they were failing, He fell asleep: and a storm of wind came down upon the lake, and they were filled <i>with water,</i> and were in <i>great</i> danger. <A name="25"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>And they came to <i>Him</i> and awoke Him, saying, Master, master, we are perishing. Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and the raging of the water, and they ceased, and there was a calm. <A name="26"></a><span class="red"><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>And He said unto them, <FR>Where is your faith?<Fr> But they were struck with awe and amazement, and said one to another, who is this? for He commandeth even the winds and the sea, and they obey Him.<p> <A name="27"></a><p class="hdg">The Demons and the Pigs<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/8.htm#28">Matthew 8:28–34</a>; <a href ="../mark/5.htm">Mark 5:1–20</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>And they sailed to the country of the Gadarenes, which is over against Galilee. <A name="28"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>And when He was landed, there met Him a man out of the city, who had <i>been possessed by</i> demons a long while, and wore no clothes, and abode in no dwelling but the tombs. <A name="29"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>But when he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell down to Him, and said with a loud voice, What have I <i>to do</i> with thee, Jesus, <i>thou</i> Son of the most high God? I beseech thee, do not torment me. <A name="30"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>(For He commanded the impure spirit to come out of the man; which had oftentimes seized him <i>so violently,</i> that tho' he was bound with chains and fetters, yet he broke the bands asunder, and was driven by the demon into <i>those</i> lonely places.) <A name="31"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>And Jesus asked him, saying, <FR>What is thy name?<Fr> and he said, Legion: because many demons were entred into him. <A name="32"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>And they besought Him that He would not command them to go into the abyss:<p> <A name="33"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>but <i>as</i> there was there an herd of many swine feeding on the mountain, they intreated Him that He would suffer them to enter into them, and He permitted them. <A name="34"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>So the demons went out of the man and entred into the swine: and the herd ran violently down the hill into the lake and were drowned.<p> <A name="35"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>And when those that looked after them saw what was done they fled; and went and told <i>it</i> in city and country: <A name="36"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>and <i>the people</i> went out to see what was done, and came to Jesus; and found the man, from whom the demons were gone out, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind: <A name="37"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>and they were afraid, for those that saw <i>it</i> told them how the demoniac was healed. <A name="38"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>And all the people of the country round about the Gadarenes desired Him to depart from them; for they were seized with great fear: and He went into the ship and returned. <A name="39"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span>Now the man from whom the demons were gone out, prayed Him to <i>let him</i> be with Him: but Jesus sent him away, <A name="40"></a><span class="red"><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-39.htm"><b>39</b></a></span>saying, <FR>Return home, and relate what God hath done for thee.<Fr> So he went away publishing through the whole city what great <i>things</i> Jesus had done to him.<p> <A name="41"></a><p class="hdg">The Healing Touch of Jesus<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/9.htm#18">Matthew 9:18–26</a>; <a href ="../mark/5.htm#21">Mark 5:21–43</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-40.htm"><b>40</b></a></span>And when Jesus returned, a <i>great</i> multitude <i>of people</i> received Him; for they were all waiting for Him. <A name="42"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-41.htm"><b>41</b></a></span>And behold there came a man whose name was Jairus, a ruler of the synagogue, and he fell at the feet of Jesus, and intreated Him to come into his house: <A name="43"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-42.htm"><b>42</b></a></span>for he had an only daughter, about twelve years <i>old,</i> and she was dying.
