This ‘āina-centered framework of solidarity asks us to consider our positionality through our relationship to distinct lands and the responsibilities that we have to them and to each other. This model of solidarity informed our journey as delegates to the International Network of Women Against Militarism (IWNAM) gathering in Okinawa in 2017 where we confronted the transnational workings of militarization in the Pacific.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Demilitarizing Hawai‘i’s Multiethnic Solidarity Decolonizing Settler Histories and Learning Our Responsibilities to ‘Āina","attachmentId":62207069,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/42078944/Demilitarizing_Hawai_i_s_Multiethnic_Solidarity_Decolonizing_Settler_Histories_and_Learning_Our_Responsibilities_to_%C4%80ina","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/42078944/Demilitarizing_Hawai_i_s_Multiethnic_Solidarity_Decolonizing_Settler_Histories_and_Learning_Our_Responsibilities_to_%C4%80ina"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="2" data-entity-id="75455153" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/75455153/Unsettling_settler_colonialism_The_discourse_and_politics_of_settlers_and_solidarity_with_Indigenous_nations">Unsettling settler colonialism: The discourse and politics of settlers, and solidarity with Indigenous nations</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="30269439" href="https://uvic.academia.edu/RitaDhamoon">Rita Dhamoon</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--metadata ds2-5-body-xs">Decolonization Indigeneity Education Society, 2014</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Unsettling settler colonialism: The discourse and politics of settlers, and solidarity with Indigenous nations","attachmentId":83216962,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/75455153/Unsettling_settler_colonialism_The_discourse_and_politics_of_settlers_and_solidarity_with_Indigenous_nations","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/75455153/Unsettling_settler_colonialism_The_discourse_and_politics_of_settlers_and_solidarity_with_Indigenous_nations"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="3" data-entity-id="8675879" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/8675879/Unsettling_settler_colonialism">Unsettling settler colonialism</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="34877" href="https://uvic.academia.edu/JeffCorntassel">Jeff Corntassel</a><span>, </span><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="30269439" href="https://uvic.academia.edu/RitaDhamoon">Rita Dhamoon</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--metadata ds2-5-body-xs">Decolonization: Indigeneity, Education & Society, 2014</p><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">Our goal in this article is to intervene and disrupt current contentious debates regarding the predominant lines of inquiry bourgeoning in settler colonial studies, the use of ‘settler’, and the politics of building solidarities between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. Settler colonial studies, ‘settler’, and solidarity, then, operate as the central themes of this paper. While somewhat jarring, our assessment of the debates is interspersed with our discussions in their original form, as we seek to explore possible lines of solidarity, accountability, and relationality to one another and to decolonization struggles both locally and globally. Our overall conclusion is that without centering Indigenous peoples’ articulations, without deploying a relational approach to settler colonial power, and without paying attention to the conditions and contingency of settler colonialism, studies of settler colonialism and practices of solidarity run the risk of reifying (and possibly replicating) settler colonial as well as other modes of domination.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Unsettling settler colonialism","attachmentId":35205055,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/8675879/Unsettling_settler_colonialism","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/8675879/Unsettling_settler_colonialism"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="4" data-entity-id="26904655" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/26904655/The_multiplicity_of_Hawaiian_sovereignty_claims_and_the_struggle_for_meaningful_autonomy_Comparative_American_Studies">The multiplicity of Hawaiian sovereignty claims and the struggle for meaningful autonomy Comparative American Studies</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="33855760" href="https://princeton.academia.edu/JKehaulaniKauanui">J Kehaulani Kauanui</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">There are multiple Hawaiian political claims and entitlements. Is independence appropriate forHawaìi? Is it appropriate for Hawaiians? These two questions are not one and the same. In the movement today, there are multiple levels of ambiguity about these two claims – the right to indigenous self-determination under US domestic law andHawaìi's right to self-determination under international law – as evidenced in the strategic invocation of both. The persistent maintenance of the dual claim reveals a particular sort of political ambivalence having to do with the dilemmas over the exercise of sovereignty in the 21st century. This article examines two different claims – one which is specific to Hawaiians as an indigenous people subjugated by US colonial-ism, and the other which is not limited to the indigenous and focuses on the broader national claims toHawaìi's independence. Within this latter arena, there are two distinct lines of political activism and legal claims – one that calls for de-colonization protocols and the other that calls for de-occupation. In August 2002, while I was delivering a public lecture at Chaminade University in Honolulu,Hawaìi, a hostile audience member confronted me during the question and answer period. She was no stranger to me; we had met many times at various political events over the course of the last decade. The project tracks Indigenous claims, negotiations, and articulations of sovereignty in Hawai‘i. Using a critically Indigenous approach to Hawaiian studies, I advance two main theses. First, Kānaka Maoli (Native Hawaiians) are discussed as a community divided on Hawaiian sovereignty. However, I contend that Kānaka Maoli exercise a diversity of strategies and tactics for Hawaiian sovereignty. I show how Kānaka Maoli practice multiple modalities of sovereignty that cumulatively produce the Kanaka ‘Ōiwi (Indigenous Hawaiian) politics of ea (life and sovereignty). Second, the historical development of settler colonial capitalism operationalized the US settler-state in Hawai‘i and fuels its management of Kānaka Maoli in contemporary struggles with federal recognition, nation-building, and astronomy industry development. How do we assist the original Earthkeepers and First Nations of Turtle Island in their landback, sovereignty and resistance efforts? The allyship framework provides protocols for solidarity and anti-racism work, as well as a template for the return to earth-emergent societies for all people. Uncolonizing our hearts, minds and communities is the first step toward rejecting the paradigm of “endless growth,” recognizing the value of IK (Indigenous Knowledge), and supporting the repatriation of lands to First Nations. Uncolonizing insists that we understand ourselves as we existed before modern civilization, and that implementing traditional earth-emergent ways of life are vital to pre-coloniality. If we collectively reject the delusional separation from nature that Empire has forced upon us, the potential is there to move back into right relationship with Earth Community. Anchoring ourselves into our own ethnoculture and reclaiming our own ancestral wisdom is a powerful blow against the monolith of cultural imperialism.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Centering Indigenous Resistance and Unsettling Colonial Patterns","attachmentId":66700279,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/47758646/Centering_Indigenous_Resistance_and_Unsettling_Colonial_Patterns","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/47758646/Centering_Indigenous_Resistance_and_Unsettling_Colonial_Patterns"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="8" data-entity-id="35224308" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/35224308/Pacific_Moves_Beyond_Colonialism_A_Conversation_from_Hawaii_and_Gu%C3%A5han">Pacific Moves Beyond Colonialism: A Conversation from Hawai'i and Guåhan</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="15625691" href="https://uci.academia.edu/TiaraNaputi">Tiara R Naputi</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--metadata ds2-5-body-xs">Feminist Studies, 2017</p><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">Recognizing the tensions between decolonial and postcolonial frameworks, this essay argues that a combined post/decolonial approach can illuminate colonial processes and reassert indigeneity. Writing as a Chamorro and a haole scholar, we weave together examples from Guåhan and Hawai'i to illustrate how a joint mobilization of decolonial and postcolonial approaches expose settler colonial processes and resistances. Engaging in sociopolitical forms of recognition, such as treaty making, which acknowledge other Indigenous people and the traditional tribal territories on which they reside, diasporic Native Hawaiians living in California can also be understood as embodying a praxis of kuleana. Maintaining reciprocal relationships with land and people is an essential quality of being Indigenous. However, as displacement is a specific modality of settler colonialism, around 50 percent of Native Hawaiians now live outside of their homeland, with the largest populations of the displaced residing in California. This work reveals that trans-Indigenous recognitions actively regenerate social and political futures for Indigenous communities and are thus invaluable in combatting settler colonial institutions that continue to displace both California Indians and Native Hawaiians from their own lands and resources.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Sovereign Embodiment: Native Hawaiians and Expressions of Diasporic Kuleana","attachmentId":62981147,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/42759581/Sovereign_Embodiment_Native_Hawaiians_and_Expressions_of_Diasporic_Kuleana","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/42759581/Sovereign_Embodiment_Native_Hawaiians_and_Expressions_of_Diasporic_Kuleana"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div></div></div><div class="ds-sticky-ctas--wrapper js-loswp-sticky-ctas hidden"><div class="ds-sticky-ctas--grid-container"><div class="ds-sticky-ctas--container"><button class="ds2-5-button js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"continue-reading-button--sticky-ctas","attachmentId":66621789,"attachmentType":"pdf","workUrl":null}">See full PDF</button><button class="ds2-5-button ds2-5-button--secondary js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"download-pdf-button--sticky-ctas","attachmentId":66621789,"attachmentType":"pdf","workUrl":null}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 20px" translate="no">download</span>Download PDF</button></div></div></div><div class="ds-below-fold--grid-container"><div class="ds-work--container js-loswp-embedded-document"><div class="attachment_preview" data-attachment="Attachment_66621789" style="display: none"><div class="js-scribd-document-container"><div class="scribd--document-loading js-scribd-document-loader" style="display: block;"><img alt="Loading..." src="//a.academia-assets.com/images/loaders/paper-load.gif" /><p>Loading Preview</p></div></div><div style="text-align: center;"><div class="scribd--no-preview-alert js-preview-unavailable"><p>Sorry, preview is currently unavailable.
