for I will not go<MH5927> up<MH5927> in your midst<MH7130>, because<MH3588> you are <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>an obstinate<MH7186, 6203> people<MH5971a>, and I might<MH6435> destroy<MH3615> you on the way<MH1870>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/33-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>When the people<MH5971a> heard<MH8085> this<MH2088> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>sad<MH7451a> word<MH1697>, they went<MH56> into<MH56> mourning<MH56>, and none<MH3808, 376> of them put<MH7896> on his jewelry<MH5716>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/33-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>For the LORD<MH3068> had said<MH559> to Moses<MH4872>, “Say<MH559> to the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478>, ‘You are <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>an obstinate<MH7186, 6203> people<MH5971a>; <i>if</i> I <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>were to go<MH5927> up<MH5927> in your midst<MH7130> for <i>just</i> one<MH259> moment<MH7281>, I would destroy<MH3615> you. So now<MH6258>, take<MH3381> off<MH3381> your <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>jewelry<MH5716> that I may know<MH3045> what<MH4100> I shall do<MH6213a> to you.’” <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/33-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>So the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> stripped<MH5337> themselves of their jewelry<MH5716>, from Mount<MH2022> Horeb<MH2722> <i>onward.</i> <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/33-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>Now Moses<MH4872> used to take<MH3947> the tent<MH168> and pitch<MH5186> it outside<MH4480, 2351> the camp<MH4264>, a good<MH7368> distance<MH7368> from the camp<MH4264>, and he called<MH7121> it the tent<MH168> of meeting<MH4150>. And everyone<MH3605> who sought<MH1245> the LORD<MH3068> would go<MH3318> out<MH3318> to the tent<MH168> of meeting<MH4150> which<MH834> was outside<MH4480, 2351> the camp<MH4264>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/33-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>And it came<MH1961> about<MH1961>, whenever Moses<MH4872> went<MH3318> out<MH3318> to the tent<MH168>, that all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a> would arise<MH6965> and stand<MH5324>, each<MH376> at the entrance<MH6607> of his tent<MH168>, and gaze<MH5027> after<MH310> Moses<MH4872> until<MH5704> he entered<MH935> the tent<MH168>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/33-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>Whenever Moses<MH4872> entered<MH935> the tent<MH168>, the pillar<MH5982> of cloud<MH6051> would descend<MH3381> and stand<MH5975> at the entrance<MH6607> of the tent<MH168>; and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>the LORD would speak<MH1696> with Moses<MH4872>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/33-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>When all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a> saw<MH7200> the pillar<MH5982> of cloud<MH6051> standing<MH5975> at the entrance<MH6607> of the tent<MH168>, all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a> would stand<MH6965> and worship<MH2331c>, each<MH376> at the entrance<MH6607> of his tent<MH168>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/33-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>So the LORD<MH3068> used to speak<MH1696> to Moses<MH4872> face<MH6440> to face<MH6440>, just<MH3512c> as<MH3512c> a man<MH376> speaks<MH1696> to his friend<MH7453>. When <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>Moses returned<MH7725> to the camp<MH4264>, his servant<MH8334> Joshua<MH3091>, the son<MH1121> of Nun<MH5126>, a young<MH5288> man<MH5288>, would not depart<MH4185> from the tent<MH168>. <p class="hdg">Moses Intercedes</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/33-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Then Moses<MH4872> said<MH559> to the LORD<MH3068>, “See<MH7200>, You say<MH559> to me, ‘Bring<MH5927> up<MH5927> this<MH2088> people<MH5971a>!’ But You Yourself<MH859> have not let me know<MH3045> whom<MH834> You will send<MH7971> with me. Moreover, You have said<MH559>, ‘I have known<MH3045> you by name<MH8034>, and you have also<MH1571> found<MH4672> favor<MH2580> in My sight<MH5869>.’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/33-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Now<MH6258> then, if<MH518> I have found<MH4672> favor<MH2580> in Your sight<MH5869> in any<MH4994> way<MH4994>, please<MH4994> let me know<MH3045> Your ways<MH1870> so that I may know<MH3045> You, in<MH4616> order<MH4616> that<MH4616> I may find<MH4672> favor<MH2580> in Your sight<MH5869>. Consider<MH7200> too, that this<MH2088> nation<MH1471> is Your people<MH5971a>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/33-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>And He said<MH559>, “My presence<MH6440> shall go<MH1980> <i>with you,</i> and I will give<MH5117> you rest<MH5117>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/33-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Then he said<MH559> to Him, “If<MH518> Your presence<MH6440> does not go<MH1980> <i>with us,</i> do not lead<MH5927> us up<MH5927> from here<MH2088>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/33-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>For how<MH4100> then<MH645> can it be known<MH3045> that I have found<MH4672> favor<MH2580> in Your sight<MH5869>, I and Your people<MH5971a>?
