<span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/7-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>and <i>when they come</i> from the marketplace<MG58>, they do not eat<MG2068> unless<MG1437, 3361> they <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>completely<MG907> cleanse<MG907> themselves; and there are many<MG4183> other<MG243> things<MG4183> which<MG3739> they have received<MG3880> <i>as traditions</i> to firmly<MG2902> hold<MG2902>, <i>such as</i> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>washing<MG909> of cups<MG4221>, pitchers<MG3582>, and copper<MG5473> pots<MG5473>.) <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/7-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>And the Pharisees<MG5330> and the scribes<MG1122> *asked<MG1905> Him, “Why<MG1223, 5101> do Your disciples<MG3101> not walk<MG4043> in<MG2596> accordance<MG2596> with<MG2596> the tradition<MG3862> of the elders<MG4245>, but eat<MG2068> their bread<MG740> with <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>unholy<MG2839> hands<MG5495>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/7-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>But He said<MG3004> to them, “Rightly<MG2573> did Isaiah<MG2268> prophesy<MG4395> about<MG4012> you hypocrites<MG5273>, as it is written<MG1125>: <t><p class="indent1">‘THIS<MG3778> PEOPLE<MG2992> HONORS<MG5091> ME WITH THEIR LIPS<MG5491>, <t><p class="indent1">BUT THEIR HEART<MG2588> IS FAR<MG4206> AWAY<MG568, 4206> FROM ME. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/7-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>‘AND IN<MG3155> VAIN<MG3155> DO THEY WORSHIP<MG4576> ME, <t><p class="indent1">TEACHING<MG1321> AS DOCTRINES<MG1319> THE COMMANDMENTS<MG1778> OF MEN<MG444>.’ <A><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/7-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Neglecting<MG863> the commandment<MG1785> of God<MG2316>, you hold<MG2902> to the tradition<MG3862> of men<MG444>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/7-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>He was also<MG2532> saying<MG3004> to them, “You are experts<MG2573> at setting<MG114> aside<MG114> the commandment<MG1785> of God<MG2316> in<MG2443> order<MG2443> to<MG2443> keep<MG5083> your tradition<MG3862>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/7-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>For Moses<MG3475> said<MG3004>, ‘HONOR<MG5091> YOUR FATHER<MG3962> AND YOUR MOTHER<MG3384>’; and, ‘THE ONE WHO SPEAKS<MG2551> EVIL<MG2551> OF<MG2551> FATHER<MG3962> OR<MG2228> MOTHER<MG3384>, IS <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>CERTAINLY TO BE PUT<MG5053> TO DEATH<MG2288>’; <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/7-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>but you say<MG3004>, ‘If<MG1437> a person<MG444> says<MG3004> to his father<MG3962> or<MG2228> his mother<MG3384>, whatever<MG3739, 1437> I have<MG1473> that would help<MG5623> you is Corban<MG2878a> (that is, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>given<MG1435> <i>to God</i>),’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/7-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>you no<MG3765> longer<MG3765> allow<MG863> him to do<MG4160> anything<MG3762> for <i>his</i> father<MG3962> or<MG2228> <i>his</i> mother<MG3384>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/7-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span><i>thereby</i> invalidating<MG208> the word<MG3056> of God<MG2316> by your tradition<MG3862> which<MG3739> you have handed<MG3860> down<MG3860>; and you do<MG4160> many<MG4183> things<MG4183> such<MG3946> as that.” <p class="hdg">The Heart of Man</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/7-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>After He called<MG4341> the crowd<MG3793> to Him again<MG3825>, He <i>began</i> saying<MG3004> to them, “Listen<MG191> to Me, all<MG3956> of you, and understand<MG4920>: <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/7-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>there is nothing<MG3762> outside<MG1855> the person<MG444> which can<MG1410> defile<MG2840> him if it goes<MG1531> into him; but the things which come<MG1607> out<MG1607> of the person<MG444> are what defile<MG2840> the person<MG444><span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/7-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>And when<MG3753> He <i>later</i> entered<MG1525> a house<MG3624>, away<MG575> from the crowd<MG3793>, His disciples<MG3101> asked<MG1905> Him about the parable<MG3850b>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/7-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>And He *said<MG3004> to them, “Are you so<MG3779> lacking<MG801> in<MG801> understanding<MG801> as<MG2532> well<MG2532>? Do you not understand<MG3539> that whatever<MG3956> goes<MG1531> into the person<MG444> from<MG1855> outside<MG1855> cannot<MG1410, 3756> defile<MG2840> him, <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/7-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>because<MG3754> it does not go<MG1531> into his heart<MG2588>, but into his stomach<MG2836>, and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>is eliminated<MG1519, 856, 1607>?” (<i>Thereby</i> He declared<MG2511> all<MG3956> foods<MG1033> clean<MG2511>.) <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/7-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>And He was saying<MG3004>, “That which comes<MG1607> out<MG1607> of the person<MG444>, that <i>is what</i> defiles<MG2840> the person<MG444>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/7-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>For from<MG2081> within<MG2081>, out of the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>hearts<MG2588> of people<MG444>, come<MG1607> the evil<MG2556> thoughts<MG1261>, <i>acts of</i> sexual<MG4202> immorality<MG4202>, thefts<MG2829>, murders<MG5408>, <i>acts of</i> adultery<MG3430>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/7-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>deeds<MG4124> of<MG4124> greed<MG4124>, wickedness<MG4189>, deceit<MG1388>, indecent<MG766> behavior<MG766>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>envy<MG3788, 4190>, slander<MG988>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>pride<MG5243>, <i>and</i> foolishness<MG877>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/7-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>All<MG3956> these<MG3778> evil<MG4190> things<MG4190> come<MG1607> from<MG2081> within<MG2081> and defile<MG2840> the person<MG444>.” <p class="hdg">The Syrophoenician Woman</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/7-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> Jesus got<MG450> up<MG450> and went<MG565> from<MG1564> there<MG1564> to the region<MG3725> of Tyre<MG5184><span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>. And when He had entered<MG1525> a house<MG3614>, He wanted<MG2309> no<MG3762> one<MG3762> to know<MG1097> <i>about it;</i> and <i>yet</i> He could<MG1410> not escape<MG2990> notice<MG2990>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/7-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>But after hearing<MG191> about<MG4012> Him, a woman<MG1135> whose<MG3739> little<MG2365> daughter<MG2365> had<MG2192> an unclean<MG169> spirit<MG4151> immediately<MG2117> came<MG2064> and fell<MG4363> at His feet<MG4228>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/7-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> the woman<MG1135> was a <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>Gentile<MG1674>, of Syrophoenician<MG4949> descent<MG1085>. And she <i>repeatedly</i> asked<MG2065> Him to cast<MG1544b> the demon<MG1140> out<MG1544b> of her daughter<MG2364>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/7-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>And He was saying<MG3004> to her, “Let<MG863> the children<MG5043> be satisfied<MG5526> first<MG4413>, for it is not <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>good<MG2570> to take<MG2983> the children’s<MG5043> bread<MG740> and throw<MG906> it to the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>dogs<MG2952>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/7-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>But she answered<MG611> and *said<MG3004> to Him, “Yes<MG3483a>, Lord<MG2962>, <i>but</i> even<MG2532> the dogs<MG2952> under<MG5270> the table<MG5132> feed<MG2068> on the children’s<MG3813> crumbs<MG5589>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/7-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>And He said<MG3004> to her, “Because<MG1223> of this<MG3778> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>answer<MG3056>, go<MG5217>; the demon<MG1140> has gone<MG1831> out<MG1831> of your daughter<MG2364>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/7-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>And after going<MG565> back<MG565> to her home<MG3624>, she found<MG2147> the child<MG3813> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[r]</a></span>lying<MG906> on the bed<MG2825b>, and the demon<MG1140> gone<MG1831>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/7-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>Again<MG3825> He left<MG1831> the region<MG3725> of Tyre<MG5184> and came<MG2064> through<MG1223> Sidon<MG4605> to the Sea<MG2281> of Galilee<MG1056>, within<MG303, 3319> the region<MG3725> of Decapolis<MG1179>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/7-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>And they *brought<MG5342> to Him one<MG2974> who was deaf<MG2974> and had<MG3424> difficulty<MG3424> speaking<MG3424>, and they *begged<MG3870> Him to lay<MG2007> His hand<MG5495> on him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/7-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>And <i>Jesus</i> took<MG618> him aside<MG618> from the crowd<MG3793>, by himself<MG2398>, and put<MG906> His fingers<MG1147> in his ears<MG3775>, and after spitting<MG4429>, He touched<MG681> his tongue<MG1100> <i>with the saliva;</i> <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/7-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>and looking<MG308> up<MG308> to heaven<MG3772> with a deep<MG4727> sigh<MG4727>, He *said<MG3004> to him, “Ephphatha<MG2188>!” that is, “Be opened<MG1272>!” <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/7-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>And his ears<MG189> were opened<MG455>, and the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[s]</a></span>impediment<MG1199> of his tongue<MG1100> was <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[t]</a></span>removed<MG3089>, and he <i>began</i> speaking<MG2980> plainly<MG3723>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/7-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>And He gave<MG1291> them orders<MG1291> not to tell<MG3004> anyone<MG3367>;
