Their relationship unfolds in 28 hotel rooms over the course of an unspecified period of time.

We caught up with the busy Messina to ask him 28 questions about his fantastic new film opening Friday at the Cinema 16:9.

GK: Chris, when your character starts to get to know Marin Ireland’s character, he bombards her with questions. So let me start to get to know you by asking you the same questions. Do you have any brothers or sisters?

CM: Yes, I have an older brother and older sister.

GK: Are your mom and dad still together?

CM: Yes.

GK: Are you Democrat or Republican?

CM: Democrat.

GK: Have you ever seen a Ronald Reagan film?

CM: Not in its full length.

GK: Vanilla or Chocolate?

CM: Vanilla

GK: Me too. Would you rather be eaten by a shark or die in an earthquake?

CM: Die in an earthquake. You might even get out of there.

GK: If you had a superpower, would you want to fly or turn me into a buffalo?

CM: Fly.

GK: I like the way you think. So let’s discus your acting career. You often play memorable supporting roles, and you have real leading man qualities. I saw the film Monogamy you did a few years back, and you got a leading man role in 28 Hotel Rooms. Do you feel pressure to “carry” a film?

CM: I like both supporting and lead parts. There’s less pressure to do supporting roles, and there’s a lot to say about having to carry a film. There is a lot to learn from doing films like Monogamy and 28 Hotel Rooms. You learn a lot as an actor taking a character over a long part–like stamina.

GK: Do you prefer to do leads or character parts?

CM: I like to move back and forth

GK: You’re on TV in The Mindy Project and had roles in about a half dozen films and shows this year alone. You’ve work on Hollywood films (Julia and Julia) and tiny indies (Monogamy); Worked for Woody Allen (Vicky Cristina Barcelona) and Ben Affleck (Argo). What makes you want to take a project, especially something intimate like this for a first time director?

CM: Each project is always different. 28 Hotel Rooms is very much what I long to do. I love getting lost in the material, to play, and be on an intimate set. We didn’t have money, or have stuff at stake. That is something I always want to do to perform. Julia & Julia was an amazing experience–but that’s a certain film, and my character is only allowed to do so much–eat food and support Amy’s character [Julia]. And the camera isn’t going to run for 20 minutes on that one. There are all different reasons you take a part–the other actors, or it scares you. Damages was an amazing character, and I was terrified of doing it–but I was so happy I did. Mindy–I never saw myself doing a network sitcom. I loved the script and was a fan of hers, so it’s always so different. That’s the fun part of being an actor–finding where to go.

GK: What was the attraction–and the challenge–of this role?

CM: We [director Matt Ross and Messina] developed it together for a year and a half, back and forth. He wrote it. We improvised stuff. Matt’s a great actor, and we discussed ways we like to work, and what we didn’t like. We wanted to come up with a project where we were setting it up to do 15-25 minute takes, no marks. Matt was very interested in there not being a right/wrong answer and examining the characters and situations, and then improvise.

GK: Great answer. How did you develop your rapport with Marin Ireland?

CM: We were lucky because we did a play together in New York, which is how we first met. It was great, and she was amazing and she took off in the New York theatre scene. We kept in contact and stayed friends, and when [Matt and I] met with women to do this, Marin was someone we came back to because she and I had a [working] relationship. We didn’t want to make a movie with someone who was afraid of being daring–doing nudity not for the sake of nudity, but to be as raw as possible. And we knew Marin would not shy away from the emotion, the nakedness of the intimacy, or baring her soul.

GK: How long did it take to shoot the film?

CM: We shot the film for like a week or two in LA and then we looked at that footage and looked to see what was missing from the relationship and see what would emotionally have an audience latch on to these folks. Then went to New York and shot a week there. Matt had five different cuts of the film, but it was him who gave it the final shape.

GK: OK, let’s talk more about hotel rooms. What do you like to do in the crucible of an anonymous hotel room?

CM: When you walk into a hotel room, you could get into so much trouble. The mini bar, call up a prostitute, and especially a hotel room in New York you can hear the noise on the street. I enjoy the quiet a hotel room provides. And that you can take your towel and throw it on the floor.

GK: [Laughs]. What do you like to order when you get room service?

CM: Depends on the hotel. I like to stay at the Bowery in New York they have great Italian–Spaghetti Bolognese.

GK: You ran drunk through hallways, stood/shouted naked on a balcony, and watched fireworks on a rooftop. These seem like fun stunts. What were your favorite activities?

CM: Being naked on the balcony was fun. That was at the end of a long day of shooting. People were acting out and we just did it. Not sure whose idea it was. Maybe drinking some wine and were dancing, and laughing. It was the most free I’ve ever been.

GK: Did you have a favorite location/hotel room from the shoot?

CM: That hotel room was nice. It was on Sunset. 30th floor Great view.

GK: Let’s explore your character. He was a writer, but what the books he wrote were never specified. I liked that we had to imagine. What kinds of books did you think he wrote?

CM: We were thinking of Less Than Zero–a pop book that became a big deal and was hard to duplicate. We thought of him like Ellis. Not based on Ellis, but a book like that.

GK: I really like your answer, but I kept thinking he was more a John Grisham/Lee Childs type writer. What made you come to that decision?

CM: We we thinking about great bands and their first album–how when you try to follow up a smash hit, how do you do it? And the pressure of that. He was a guy who soon feels mediocre; he starts cocky but at end of the day he’s not the greatest writer.

GK: And how did you relate to that?

CM: I can relate to that as an actor. When I first stated out I thought I was Brando, and now I feel lucky I have a job. I don’t think I’m Brando anymore.

GK: What do you think of his (and her) morality? Do you think that audiences might find this adulterous couple unlikable?

CM: We were worried about that–that they are lying. I know so many people who are stuck in relationship they don’t want to be in. We talked about timing. You think you’re happy and in love, or years later you meet someone you once loved and you’re both in different places in your life. The film doesn’t condone cheating, but these characters couldn’t break away from each other. They had the wrong timing. He’s got a girlfriend, and they both get married [to other people]. They can’t find that window where they were both available to each other. I think people can relate to that–a love lost, or on that got away.

GK: What’s your secret for playing charming, angry, and forceful?

CM: Geez, I don’t know. [laughs]. You don’t think about the emotion, just go moment to moment and hope something happens. We wanted to be as truthful as we can, and there are times where you’re in a stage and put your best self forward and your real reactions come out–such as jealousy.

GK: You mentioned improvising earlier. I suspect making 28 Hotel Rooms was like making 28 short films, really. How did you work?

CM: It was like no other movie I’d done before. The director and producer didn’t shy away from the anarchy of rolling 20 minutes waiting for something to happen. We set up an environment where it was just “wait and see.”

GK: Your character does a bit of dancing in the film. Do you like to dance?

CM: My mom was a dance teacher, and she put me in classes in 3rd grade. I wanted to be Baryshnikov until 9th or 10th grade when I burned out. I was really into dancing. I loved it.

GK: WOW! That surprises me. OK, how can I transition this: Let’s talk about sex. I’ve heard actors say that making love on screen is nerve-wracking, unpleasant, and also that everyone who says that is lying–having sex on screen is great fun. How was it for you making 28 Hotel Rooms?

CM: It’s a little bit of everything. It starts off amped up with energy that’s crazy/fun then strange, and then static. I guess it’s different for each situation, and this film is unlike what I’ve done–long takes, completely naked. You jump and go for it, so it’s electric and exciting. You want to take care of your scene partner, that they are comfortable and feel good about what they are doing.

GK: You are bareass-ed in the first scene and have several full frontal scenes later in the film. What can you say about exposing it all–liberating, scary, or a really good excuse to keep fit?

CM: Liberating. I’d done nudity in the theatre. After you do it, or take nude pictures, and seeing photos on line you’re like why?! But we were going after the truth, and we weren’t going to ask the woman to go full-frontal and not the man. It’s a powerful feeling. I don’t love the way I look.

GK: Your character gives his blowjob chronicles in one scene. Do you want to recount any stories about blowjobs you received?

CM: No. I think they’re all in the film.

GK: OK, last question, and it’s the one you posed on the rooftop, naked: Did your life turn out the way you thought it would?

CM: Great question! No. It turned out better. I definitely have a great family and lucky to work steady, and play different parts with great people. I would have never thought I’d play a gynecologist on a network comedy. I’m doing The Newsroom and Damages. I feel lucky. I’m a good actor, and I know a lot of great actors who can’t get hired. I feel lucky. And that doesn’t mean that there isn’t more that I want to do and will do and will push and fight for, but this very moment, I feel lucky. I didn’t turn out the way I thought it would, but it might have turned out better.

<fb:like href="http://www.aroundphilly.com/blog/2012/11/19/28-questions-for-chris-messina-about-28-hotel-rooms/" show_faces="true" width="450"></fb:like>

Related Posts:

<div style="border: 0pt none ;
