To identify settings that identify periods of wakefulness during
sleep,we used data from a subsample of women who reported discrete wake bouts while nursing at night.
Setting: Equatorial Tanzania in January to February 2016.
Participants: The Hadza—a non-industrial foraging population.
Measurements: Thirty-three subjects participated in the study for 393 observation days. Using the Bland-
Altman technique to determine concordance, we analyzed reported events of daytime napping and nighttime
wake bouts.
Results: Only 1 parameter setting could reliably detect reported naps (15-minute nap length, ≤50 counts).
Moreover, of the 6 tested parameter settings to detect wake bouts, the setting where the sleep-wake
algorithm was parameterized to detect 20 consecutive minutes throughout the designated sleep period
did not overestimate or underestimate wake bouts, had the lowest mean difference, and did not
significantly differ from reported wake-bout events.
Conclusion: We propose operational definitions for multiple dimensions of segmented sleep and conclude
that actigraphy is an effective method for detecting segmented sleep in future cross-site comparative
research. The implications of such work are far reaching, as sleep research in preindustrial and developing
societies is documenting natural sleep-wake patterns in previously inaccessible environments.

<a id="df41c0aa4012caf96ca8582a9c511f31" class="wp-workCard--action" rel="nofollow" data-click-track="profile-work-strip-download" data-download="{"attachment_id":50707569,"asset_id":30242563,"asset_type":"Work","button_location":"profile"}" href="https://www.academia.edu/attachments/50707569/download_file?s=profile">DownloadEdit

require.config({ waitSeconds: 90 })(["https://a.academia-assets.com/assets/wow_profile-a9bf3a2bc8c89fa2a77156577594264ee8a0f214d74241bc0fcd3f69f8d107ac.js","https://a.academia-assets.com/assets/work_edit-ad038b8c047c1a8d4fa01b402d530ff93c45fee2137a149a4a5398bc8ad67560.js"], function() { // from javascript_helper.rb var dispatcherData = {} if (true){ window.WowProfile.dispatcher = window.WowProfile.dispatcher || _.clone(Backbone.Events); dispatcherData = { dispatcher: window.WowProfile.dispatcher, downloadLinkId: "df41c0aa4012caf96ca8582a9c511f31" } } $('.js-work-strip[data-work-id=30242563]').each(function() { if (!$(this).data('initialized')) { new WowProfile.WorkStripView({ el: this, workJSON: {"id":30242563,"title":"What is segmented sleep? We find that all three show
similar sleep organization, suggesting that they
express core human sleep patterns, most likely characteristic
of pre-modern era Homo sapiens. Sleep
periods, the times from onset to offset, averaged
6.9–8.5 hr, with sleep durations of 5.7–7.1 hr,
amounts near the low end of those industrial societies
[4–7]. There was a difference of nearly 1 hr between
summer and winter sleep. Daily variation in
sleep duration was strongly linked to time of onset,
rather than offset. None of these groups began sleep
near sunset, onset occurring, on average, 3.3 hr after
sunset. Awakening was usually before sunrise. The
sleep period consistently occurred during the nighttime
period of falling environmental temperature,
was not interrupted by extended periods of waking,
and terminated, with vasoconstriction, near the nadir
of daily ambient temperature. The daily cycle of temperature
change, largely eliminated from modern
sleep environments, may be a potent natural regulator
of sleep. To identify settings that identify periods of wakefulness during\nsleep,we used data from a subsample of women who reported discrete wake bouts while nursing at night.\nSetting: Equatorial Tanzania in January to February 2016.\nParticipants: The Hadza—a non-industrial foraging population.\nMeasurements: Thirty-three subjects participated in the study for 393 observation days. Using the Bland-\nAltman technique to determine concordance, we analyzed reported events of daytime napping and nighttime\nwake bouts.\nResults: Only 1 parameter setting could reliably detect reported naps (15-minute nap length, ≤50 counts).\nMoreover, of the 6 tested parameter settings to detect wake bouts, the setting where the sleep-wake\nalgorithm was parameterized to detect 20 consecutive minutes throughout the designated sleep period\ndid not overestimate or underestimate wake bouts, had the lowest mean difference, and did not\nsignificantly differ from reported wake-bout events.\nConclusion: We propose operational definitions for multiple dimensions of segmented sleep and conclude\nthat actigraphy is an effective method for detecting segmented sleep in future cross-site comparative\nresearch. We find that all three show
similar sleep organization, suggesting that they
express core human sleep patterns, most likely characteristic
of pre-modern era Homo sapiens. Sleep
periods, the times from onset to offset, averaged
6.9–8.5 hr, with sleep durations of 5.7–7.1 hr,
amounts near the low end of those industrial societies
[4–7]. There was a difference of nearly 1 hr between
summer and winter sleep. Daily variation in
sleep duration was strongly linked to time of onset,
rather than offset. None of these groups began sleep
near sunset, onset occurring, on average, 3.3 hr after
sunset. Awakening was usually before sunrise. The
sleep period consistently occurred during the nighttime
period of falling environmental temperature,
was not interrupted by extended periods of waking,
and terminated, with vasoconstriction, near the nadir
of daily ambient temperature. The daily cycle of temperature
change, largely eliminated from modern
sleep environments, may be a potent natural regulator
of sleep. Light exposure was maximal in the
morning and greatly decreased at noon, indicating
that all three groups seek shade at midday and that
light activation of the suprachiasmatic nucleus
is maximal in the morning.
