The root "εὐσχημόνως" (euschemonōs) suggests a sense of decorum and propriety, emphasizing the importance of living a life that reflects the values and teachings of Christ. Historically, the early Christian community was under scrutiny by both Jewish and pagan observers, and Paul encourages the Thessalonians to live in a way that would not bring reproach upon the Gospel. This call to proper behavior is a reminder that our actions are a testimony to our faith and can either attract or repel those who do not yet know Christ.
toward outsiders
The term "outsiders" refers to those who are not part of the Christian community, often translated from the Greek "τοὺς ἔξω" (tous exō). In the context of the early church, this would include both Jews and Gentiles who had not accepted the message of Jesus. Paul is urging the Thessalonians to be mindful of their witness to the world, recognizing that their conduct can influence how the Gospel is perceived by those outside the faith. This exhortation underscores the missional aspect of Christian living, where believers are called to be salt and light, demonstrating the love and truth of Christ through their interactions with non-believers.
without being dependent on anyone
The phrase "without being dependent on anyone" is translated from the Greek "μηδενὸς χρείαν ἔχοντες" (mēdenos chreian echontes), which literally means "having need of nothing from anyone." This reflects a call to self-sufficiency and industriousness, encouraging believers to work diligently and provide for themselves so as not to be a burden to others. In the historical context, this was particularly important as the early church sought to maintain a positive reputation and avoid accusations of idleness or exploitation. Paul’s instruction here aligns with the broader biblical principle of stewardship and responsibility, reminding Christians that their work is a form of worship and a means of serving both God and their community.
Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers
(12) Honestly.--Not in our modern sense of the word, but "honourably," "creditably."
Toward--i.e., "in reference to," "in your connection with." The heathen were certain to be watching the conduct of the members of the new religion, and it would bring down political suspicion if they were seen to be acting more like agitators for a secret society than honest citizens who worked at their handicraft and calling.
Of nothing.--Right: the marginal version is hardly consistent with the Greek. Two purposes will be fulfilled by their industry: (1) to allay heathen suspicion; (2) to be well supplied themselves. It seems as if they had been reduced to begging of other Churches in return for their own expensive charities.

Pulpit Commentary
Verse 12. - That ye walk honestly; that is, honorably; seemly. Toward them that are without; without the pale of the Christian Church, toward those who are not Christians, whether Jews or Gentiles, the unbelieving world.
