Das diskutierten im September 1994 die Pressesprecher der Universität Bayreuth (Jürgen Abel), der Ruhr-Universität Bochum (Dr. Josef König), der TU Clausthal (Jochen Brinkmann) und der Leiter des Clausthaler Rechenzentrums (Dr. Gerald Lange) – und eine Idee war geboren, die nun schon mehr als 25 Jahre trägt. </p> <h5>Informationsaustausch per E-Mail – eine technische Neuheit</h5> <p>Nach dem Vorbild der amerikanischen Expertendatenbank "ProfNet" entwickelten die Initiatoren ein Vermittlungsinstrument. Zunächst entstand noch 1994 die Mailingliste „Elster“ (Elektronische Technologie für europaweite Recherche). Per E-Mail und Fax konnten JournalistInnen über sie Expertenanfragen stellen. Diese wurden an die angeschlossenen Pressestellen von Forschungseinrichtungen weitergeleitet. Beim offiziellen Start im Januar 1995 nutzten bereits 32 Pressestellen und 20 Journalisten Elster. </p> <h5>Die erste Website und Themenforen</h5> <p>Die direkte Kommunikation zwischen Wissenschaft, Medien und zunehmend auch privaten Nutzern fand Anklang. Die Idee entstand, den Kommunikationsweg auch in die andere Richtung zu nutzen: Mithilfe einer zweiten Mailingliste konnten nun die Pressesprecher auch den Journalist:innen etwas mitteilen, indem sie ihre Pressemitteilungen versandten. </p> <p>Im Januar 1995 folgte die erste idw-Website. Das Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF) förderte ab November 1996 für drei Jahre den weiteren Aufbau der inzwischen in "Informationsdienst Wissenschaft" umbenannten Internet-Plattform. Seit 2000 finanziert sich der idw aus Beiträgen der angeschlossenen Pressestellen. Er ergänzte und entwickelte seine Angebote immer weiter, z. B. um eine neue datenbankbasierte Website und um den Wissenschaftskalender, über den die Mitglieder nun auch Veranstaltungen ankündigen konnten. </p> <h5>Vom Projekt zum Verein</h5> <p>Seit 2002 ist der Informationsdienst Wissenschaft ein eingetragener Verein mit einer jährlich stattfindenden Mitgliederversammlung. Ein ehrenamtlicher <a href="https://www.idw-online.de/de/imprint">Vorstand</a> verantwortet und ein Team aus festangestellten Mitarbeiter:innn erledigt das operative Geschäft. Heute beschäftigt der idw zehn Teilzeit- und zwei Vollzeitkräfte an den drei Standorten Bayreuth, Bochum und Clausthal.</p> <p>Die Pflege und die Weiterentwicklung des Systems war stets eine der Hauptaufgaben: 2003 entstand die erste Expertenliste, seit 2004 ist der Informationsdienst Wissenschaft als Aussteller auf verschiedenen Konferenzen vertreten, 2005 wurden der RSS-Feed und die Sperrfristmeldungen eingeführt. 2007 wurden Einzelstatistiken zu jeder Pressemitteilung eingeführt, um den Mitgliedern das Monitoring zu erleichtern.</p> <p>Seit 2008 belohnt der idw <a href="https://idw-online.de/de/quality">Qualität</a> in der Wissenschaftskommunikation mit dem <a href="https://www.idw-online.de/de/idwaward">idw-Preis</a>.</p> <h5>Viele Formate, viele Kanäle</h5> <p>Seit 2010 ist der idw auch auf X (damals hieß die Plattform Twitter) und seit 2011 auf <a href="https://www.facebook.com/idwonline">Facebook</a> vertreten. 2013 stand ein kompletter Relaunch des Webauftritts einschließlich eines Redesigns an.</p> <p>2013 startete der idw seine <a href="https://idw-bilder.de/">Bilddatenbank</a>, in der unabhängig von den Pressemitteilungen gezielt nach Bildern gesucht werden kann. Der wachsenden Bedeutung von Bildern wird auch durch ein Video-Projekt <a href="https://idw-online.de/de/wnvproject">"Wissenschaft bewegt"</a> Rechnung getragen: Seit Mitte 2020 steht den Mitgliedspressestellen Werkzeuge zur Verfügung, um Wissenschaftsnachrichtenvideos, Expert:innen- und Erklärvideos produzieren zu können. Die Filme werden über einen <a href="https://videos.idw-online.de" title="Wissenschaftsnachrichtenvideo">eigenen Kanal</a> verbreitet.</p> <p>Seit 2021 gibt es News-Apps für iOS und Android-Mobilgeräte, worüber die Nachrichtensuche feiner und schneller gefiltert werden kann.</p> <p>Seit Ende 2022 ist der idw nicht nur mit einer eigenen Instanz auf <a href="https://wisskomm.social/explore" alt="Mastodon" title="Mastodon">Mastodon</a> vertreten, sondern verbreitet dort auch aktiv die <a href="https://idw-online.social/@idw_online" alt="Pressemitteilungen" title="Pressemitteilungen"> Pressemitteilungen </a> der Art Forschungsergebnisse, Forschungsprojekte und wissenschaftliche Publikationen und stärkt so seine Präsenz im Fediverse. </p> <p>2025 wurde die idw-<a href="https://experten.idw-online.de/" alt="zur Expert:innendatenbank" title="zur Expert:innendatenbank">Expert:innendatenbank</a> freigeschaltet. Die idw-Mitgliedseinrichtungen tragen dort auskunftsbereite Fachleute aller Wissenschaftsdisziplinen ein. Akkreditierte Journalist:innen erhalten Zugriff auf die Daten, können sie nach nach Schlagwörtern durchsuchen und die Ergebnisse filtern unter anderem nach Land und Sprache.</p> </div></div></div>
