Dear readers,

A belated welcome to the New Year. Spring is upon us in this part of the globe. Time for a little update on the Journal of Applied Botany and Food Quality!

Last year, we published 19 original research articles (read full issue at https://ojs.openagrar.de/index.php/JABFQ/issue/view/2469) from a total of 122 submitted manuscripts. Several submissions are still in review or revision. A big thank you to our authors and reviewers for their quality contributions!

But now let’s talk about new developments this year. A new Special Section with the focus on “Applied botany in urban areas - Mitigation of climate change” is open for submission! Plants in urban areas do not usually provide food, feed or raw materials. Nevertheless, they do provide a wide range of other ecosystem services to urban populations. To highlight what these might be and how they can be improved, we invite you all to contribute to our understanding and further the development of green cities. To support us in this endeavour, we welcome Prof. Petra Schneider as Guest Editor. She is Professor for International Water Management and Head of the working group Ecological Engineering and will broaden our usual scope to include topics at the interface between engineering and botany. We welcome original research articles as well as reviews. Further information can be found at https://ojs.openagrar.de/index.php/JABFQ/special_section.

We bid farewell to Dr. Maik Kleinwächter, who has done an excellent job for us as section editor in the fields of medicinal and aroma plants, plant analysis, secondary metabolites and alkaloids. He is moving on to new professional challenges and we wish him every success.

Further on, we welcome three new section editors. Time for a small update on the Journal of Applied Botany and Food Quality!

Last year, we published 27 original research articles (read full issue at https://ojs.openagrar.de/index.php/JABFQ/issue/view/2384) from a total of 119 submitted manuscripts. Several submissions are still under review.

Our impact factor improved to 1.451.

The publication charge for non-society-members remains stable at 400€ (incl. VAT), with possible waivers for authors from low-income and lower-middle-income economies. In 2021, two articles received a 100% waiver and where published free of charge for the authors. For two other articles, a reduced article processing charge of 260€ was applied.

The average journal usage is about 200 fulltext pdf downloads per day. We are working on including a download and view counter on the article pages to give better feedback to the authors.

Last year, we have partnered with ORCID and are now a data provider. Upon publication, our authors have the chance to import their new article directly into their ORCID profile.

But now lets talk about new developments this year! We have just opened this year’s Special Section with the title “Applied Botany for Sustainability”. With this special section, we offer the opportunity to demonstrate how applied botany can contribute to reach the Sustainable Development Goals. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs https://sdgs.un.org/goals) are a collection of 17 interlinked global goals designed to be a "blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all people and the world by 2030". They were set up in 2015 by the United Nations General Assembly. You can find more details on the special section and many suggestions for suitable topics at the journal’s website.

We invite everyone to participate by submitting a manuscript until August 31, 2022!

This special section is also connected to the symposium “Applied Botany for Sustainability” by the Section Applied Botany of the DGB at this year’s International Conference of the German Society for Plant Sciences. If you plan to contribute to the symposium, we invite you to submit a connected manuscript to the Journal of Applied Botany and Food Quality until May 31, 2022.

This newsletter will be send only once or twice a year and contains general information on the journal’s work. We started this year with a look into the very first issue of ‘Angewandte Botanik’ from 1919, which is now online free to read. Hopefully, more of the historic issues will follow. To this considerable collection of findings and reports from previous generations, we added another 50 scientific articles this year, eight of which are special reviews to show the whole range of topics that are applied botany.

The next year will bring some changes to the Journal of Applied Botany and Food Quality, which you might have noticed when looking around this website carefully. More detailed information will follow. Also, a new special section is in planning for 2020 in remembrance of Prof. Dr. Reinhard Lieberei, who sadly passed away this year. He was one of the leading scientists in applied botany in Germany and we are very much looking forward to the contributions of his former students and co-workers.

At this point, we want to thank all authors for their contributions, also those whose manuscripts we had to decline. Don’t be discouraged! Hand in any new, high qualitative work that fits the journal’s scope. We also thank the vast number of reviewers, who support the journal with their expertise and oftentimes very constructive criticism. Finally yet importantly, we thank our readers. We haven’t installed a newsletter with newly published journal content yet, but feel free to subscribe to our rss feed or follow us on Twitter, if you aren’t already.

We hope you have relaxing holidays and a happy new year. Please bear with us, when replies during the next two weeks are a bit slow. We are recharging our batteries as well for a good start into 2020.

Your JABFQ Editorial Team
Read More Read more about Goodbye, 100th anniversary

Farewell to two section editors and welcome to new article processing charge

2019-08-23

Dear readers,

the holiday season is over and at the editorial office, we notice an increased influx of manuscript submissions. So far, 22 manuscripts have been published this year. Have a look at the current issue and discover interesting studies on the cryopreservation of sorghum seeds, pelargonium breeding or analyses of bitter gourd, ginseng berries, Tunisian figs, Kenyan guava and many more plant derived foods.

But there are more news than this. We have to say farewell to two of our section editors. Jürgen Bender, who covered the fields of agroecology and stress physiology in crops, will be retiring. Furthermore, Karl H. Mühling, current president of the German Society for Quality Research on Plant Foods and responsible for manuscripts on plant nutrition and soil fertility at our journal, has been appointed Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Plant Nutrition and Soil Science earlier this year. This post comes with a heavy work load and will demand his full attention. We thank both, Jürgen and Karl, for their dedication and the energy they spent at the Journal of Applied Botany and Food Quality in the last years and wish them all the best.

Another important change for our authors is, that the article processing charge for manuscripts accepted for publication will raise to 400€ (incl. VAT) per article for all manuscripts submitted from 1st January 2020 onwards. As before, members of the German Society for Quality Research on Plant Foods and members of the Section Applied Botany of the German Botanical Society will not be charged, since this is included in the regular membership fees of their respective societies.
Read More Read more about Farewell to two section editors and welcome to new article processing charge

100 years Journal of Applied Botany, the oldest and the newest articles are online!

2019-02-01

Dear readers,

This year we want to celebrate the 100th birthday of our journal, which was first published as Angewandte Botanik (= Applied Botany) in 1919.

It started as journal for members of the Vereinigung für Angewandte Botanik (German Society for Applied Botany) only. On a monthly basis, it delivered the newest research results in the field of applied botany as well as short communications, literature reviews and reports from scientific meetings to the German speaking research community. After a short publication hiatus in the 1940ies, society members continued to report their findings, quickly exhausting the available print pages. Throughout the years, English titles and summaries where added, making the journal accessible for a wider, non-German speaking audience. The final step into the international research community was the opening of the journal for authors, who were not society members in the 1980ies. In 2004, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Qualitätsforschung - Pflanzliche Lebensmittel (German Society for Quality Research in Plant Foods) joined the journal due to partial overlap in their research focus, thus, making it the Journal of Applied Botany and Food Quality as we know it today. The latest change happened in 2013, with the switch from a subscription based print journal to an online-only gold open access journal. This once again broadened the readership and gained the attention of even more international researchers, which nowadays make up the majority of our journal authors.

Today, we bring you both, the oldest volume of the journal from 1919 (in German only) and with volume 92 (2019) the newest articles. Happy reading!
Read More Read more about 100 years Journal of Applied Botany, the oldest and the newest articles are online!

9 more articles and a new Impact Factor!

2018-08-02

Dear Readers,

I hope to find you well.
