but he did not give<MH5414> an inheritance<MH5159> to the Levites<MH3881> among<MH8432> them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/14-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>For the sons<MH1121> of Joseph<MH3130> were two<MH8147> tribes<MH4294>, Manasseh<MH4519> and Ephraim<MH669>, and they did not give<MH5414> a portion<MH2506> to the Levites<MH3881> in the land<MH776>, except<MH3588, 518> cities<MH5892b> to live<MH3427> in, with their pasture<MH4054> lands<MH4054> for their livestock<MH4735> and for their property<MH7075>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/14-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>The sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> did<MH6213a> exactly<MH3651, 3512c> as<MH3512c> the LORD<MH3068> had commanded<MH6680> Moses<MH4872>, and they divided<MH2505a> the land<MH776>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/14-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>Then the sons<MH1121> of Judah<MH3063> approached<MH5066> Joshua<MH3091> in Gilgal<MH1537>, and Caleb<MH3612> the son<MH1121> of Jephunneh<MH3312> the Kenizzite<MH7074> said<MH559> to him, “You know<MH3045> the word<MH1697> which<MH834> the LORD<MH3068> spoke<MH1696> to Moses<MH4872> the man<MH376> of God<MH430> on account<MH182> of <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>you and me in Kadesh-barnea<MH6947>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/14-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>I was forty<MH705> years<MH8141> old<MH1121> when Moses<MH4872> the servant<MH5650> of the LORD<MH3068> sent<MH7971> me from Kadesh-barnea<MH6947> to spy<MH7270> out<MH7270> the land<MH776>, and I brought<MH7725> word<MH1697> back<MH7725> to him as <i>it was</i> in my heart<MH3824>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/14-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Nevertheless my brothers<MH251> who<MH834> went<MH5927> up<MH5927> with me made the heart<MH3820> of the people<MH5971a> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>melt<MH4529> <i>with fear;</i> but I followed<MH310> the LORD<MH3068> my God<MH430> fully<MH4390>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/14-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>So Moses<MH4872> swore<MH7650> on that day<MH3117>, saying<MH559>, ‘The land<MH776> on which<MH834> your foot<MH7272> has walked<MH1869> shall certainly<MH518, 3808> be an inheritance<MH5159> to you and to your children<MH1121> forever<MH5704, 5769>, because<MH3588> you have followed<MH310> the LORD<MH3068> my God<MH430> fully<MH4390>.’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/14-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>And now<MH6258> behold<MH2009>, the LORD<MH3068> has let me live<MH2421a>, just<MH3512c> as<MH3512c> He spoke<MH1696>, these<MH2088> forty-five<MH705, 2568> years<MH8141>, from the time<MH227> that the LORD<MH3068> spoke<MH1696> this<MH2088> word<MH1697> to Moses<MH4872>, when<MH834> Israel<MH3478> walked<MH1980> in the wilderness<MH4057b>; and now<MH6258> behold<MH2009>, I am eighty-five<MH8084> years<MH8141> old<MH1121> today<MH3117>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/14-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>I am still<MH5750> as strong<MH2389> today<MH3117> as I was on the day<MH3117> Moses<MH4872> sent<MH7971> me; as my strength<MH3581b> was then<MH227>, so my strength<MH3581b> is now<MH6258>, for war<MH4421> and for going<MH3318> out<MH3318> and coming<MH935> in<MH935>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/14-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Now<MH6258> then, give<MH5414> me this<MH2088> hill<MH2022> country<MH2022> about which<MH834> the LORD<MH3068> spoke<MH1696> on that day<MH3117>, for you heard<MH8085> on that day<MH3117> that Anakim<MH6062> <i>were</i> there<MH8033>, with great<MH1419> fortified<MH1219> cities<MH5892b>; perhaps<MH194> the LORD<MH3068> will be with me, and I will <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>drive<MH3423> them out<MH3423> just<MH3512c> as<MH3512c> the LORD<MH3068> has spoken<MH1696>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/14-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>So Joshua<MH3091> blessed<MH1288> him and gave<MH5414> Hebron<MH2275a> to Caleb<MH3612> the son<MH1121> of Jephunneh<MH3312> as an inheritance<MH5159>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/14-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Therefore<MH5921, 3651>, Hebron<MH2275a> became<MH1961> the inheritance<MH5159> of Caleb<MH3612> the son<MH1121> of Jephunneh<MH3312> the Kenizzite<MH7074> to this<MH2088> day<MH3117>, because<MH3282, 834> he followed<MH310> the LORD<MH3068> God<MH430> of Israel<MH3478> fully<MH4390>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/14-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Now the name<MH8034> of Hebron<MH2275a> was previously<MH6440> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>Kiriath-arba<MH7153>; <i>for Arba</i> was the greatest<MH1419> man<MH120> among the Anakim<MH6062>.
