Il s'avère que cette compréhension classique réaffirmée à la Renaissance a fait de la mimesis, de l'imitatio une vertu plutôt qu'un mode de connaissance propre et un savoir-faire particulier. L'imitation est la voie qui respecte et reproduit les formes qui ont une beauté éternelle. Imiter les classiques est une voie de la vérité ; imiter la nature peut en même temps être motivé par le fait que la nature étant désormais aussi belle nature est désormais en soi un sujet approprié pour l'imitation. On a pourtant exposé comment, si, d'après Aristote, la forme des objets mimétiques que sont les tragédies doit être comprise comme celle d'un être vivant, c'est-à-dire normativement, cela ne constituait pas la norme en idéal 1 . On a même vu que la norme du vivant est bien seulement une analogie dans la mesure où la meilleure tragédie aurait la teneur du tour de force : tout en respectant la forme de la tragédie, la meilleure tragédie accomplit en frôlant de manière risquée les limites qui sont la condition de sa contenance.
