Other translators of this sonnet have chosen things of this kind: unheard-of, legendary, fabled etc. However, the word also suggests something excessive, tremendous, beyond precedent, above and beyond. In some contexts it might mean "outrageous" as when describing a high price. For some reason, the English term "epic" comes to mind. I'm not entirely sure why, but I like what it does in the English.

L2: Augen盲pfel literally means "eye-apples" and many translators have rendered it thus, but it is in fact a normal and unremarkable way of saying "eyeball" in German. Rilke is capitalizing on the dead metaphor by introducing reiften "ripened."

L3: Kandelaber can mean candelabrum, and most translators have taken it to mean that. But here, it refers to a gaslit streetlight, of the sort that dotted cities in the early 20th century, so named in German because they were commonly shaped in a way reminiscent of candelabra. The gaze is thus zur眉ckgeschraubt "turned/dialed down" as a gaslight's flame would be turned down, but not necessarily off, during the day.

L10: Sturz is normally "fall, plunge, drop" and has, without exception I believe, been so translated. It has two further meanings, however. Sturz was a common synonym for "torso" in sculpture. In common usage it also referred, as it still does in Austria, to a glass cover, or belljar, which would be transparent and reveal its contents even as it covers them.

   Labels: German, Rilke, Sonnet

Rilke: The Panther (From German)

The Panther
By Rainer Maria Rilke
Translated by A.Z. Such things are not fashionable to say nowadays, but Goethe actually shows a greater understanding of the character of classical Persian lyric poetry than many western scholars who actually knew Persian. Goethe even includes a poem in the Divan about the shallowness of those who think it worthwhile to call Hafiz a Sufi Mystic.
In 1813, Goethe had begun to read Hafiz in a recently published German translation by Austrian diplomat and Orientalist Joseph Von Hammer, and felt inspired to imitate him. When he met the beautiful and talented Marianne von Willemer in Wiesenbaden, the two fell in love and found a powerful connection in their shared admiration for Hafiz. In the passionate correspondence that developed between them, Marianne and Goethe would send each other coded messages via numerical reference to Hafiz' lyrics. A great many poems drawing on "the East" for inspiration were born of their fruitful, albeit ephemeral, affair. The end result was Goethe's West-脰stlicher Divan "West-Eastern Divan", from which the poem translated here is taken.
The Divan is essentially an imagined and imaginative dialogue between the German poet of Weimar and the Persian poet of Shiraz, a salute to an artist who greatly appealed to Goethe (rather correctly) as an enemy of dogmatism and lover of life's pleasures who prized spiritual experience and disdained religious institution, and in whom he perceived (rather mistakenly) a kind of Persian analogue to Voltaire.

Unbounded
J.W. It is, in fact, an arguably programmatic poetic text for European Romanticism. Faust's sentiment in these lines is a blend of frustration at his own condition as a human being and his longing for infinite satisfaction. Observing the sun as it sets, Faust projects his desire to perpetuate the light through a kind of spiritual ascent. By envisaging himself moving in the sun's company, which increasingly assumes the guise of a feminine divinity (in German, the word for sun die Sonne is feminine, and therefore is referred to as die G枚ttin "the Goddess"), Faust also comes to identify himself with this divine figure, imagining himself beholding it from an ethereal vantage point. He sees himself as the mythical center of comic occurrence, balanced between heaven and earth, day and night, waves and sky. As the sun sinks and evening draws on, however, Faust returns to awareness of himself and a consciousness of his earthly, limited position atop the hill, acknowledging that his fantasy was no more than that. The concluding lines of his speech affirm the validity, nonetheless, for all humanity to maintain such transcendent longings, a quintessentially Faustian feeling of infinite desire embodied in the closing images of larks, eagles and cranes.

From Faust (lines 1070-1099)
By J.W.
