Ephraim<MH669> and Manasseh<MH4519> shall be mine, as Reuben<MH7205> and Simeon<MH8095> are. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/48-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>But your children<MH4138> that you have fathered<MH3205> after<MH310> them shall be yours; they shall be called<MH7121> by the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>names<MH8034> of their brothers<MH251> in their inheritance<MH5159>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/48-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>Now as for me, when I came<MH935> from Paddan<MH6307>, Rachel<MH7354> died<MH4191>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>to my sorrow<MH5921>, in the land<MH776> of Canaan<MH3667a> on the journey<MH1870>, when there was still<MH5750> some<MH3530> distance<MH3530, 776> to go<MH935> to Ephrath<MH672>. I buried<MH6912> her there<MH8033> on the way<MH1870> to Ephrath<MH672> (that is, Bethlehem<MH1035>).” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/48-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>When Israel<MH3478> saw<MH7200> Joseph’s<MH3130> sons<MH1121>, he said<MH559>, “Who<MH4310> are these<MH428>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/48-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>And Joseph<MH3130> said<MH559> to his father<MH1>, “They are my sons<MH1121>, whom<MH834> God<MH430> has given<MH5414> me here<MH2088>.” So he said<MH559>, “Bring<MH3947> them to me, please<MH4994>, so that I may bless<MH1288> them.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/48-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>Now the eyes<MH5869> of Israel<MH3478> were<MH3513> <i>so</i> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>dim<MH3513> from age<MH2207> <i>that</i> he could<MH3201> not see<MH7200>. And <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>Joseph brought<MH5066> them close<MH5066> to him, and he kissed<MH5401a> them and embraced<MH2263> them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/48-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>And Israel<MH3478> said<MH559> to Joseph<MH3130>, “I never<MH3808> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>expected<MH6419> to see<MH7200> your face<MH6440>, and behold<MH2009>, God<MH430> has let me see<MH7200> your <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>children<MH2233> as<MH1571> well<MH1571>!” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/48-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Then Joseph<MH3130> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>took<MH3318> them from his knees<MH1290>, and bowed<MH2331c> with his face<MH639> to the ground<MH776>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/48-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>And Joseph<MH3130> took<MH3947> them both<MH8147>, Ephraim<MH669> with his right<MH3225> hand<MH3225> toward<MH4480> Israel’s<MH3478> left<MH8040>, and Manasseh<MH4519> with his left<MH8040> hand<MH8040> toward<MH4480> Israel’s<MH3478> right<MH3225>, and brought<MH5066> them close<MH5066> to him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/48-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>But Israel<MH3478> reached<MH7971> out<MH7971> his right<MH3225> hand<MH3225> and placed<MH7896> it on the head<MH7218> of Ephraim<MH669>, who<MH1931> was the younger<MH6810>, and his left<MH8040> hand<MH8040> on Manasseh’s<MH4519> head<MH7218>, crossing<MH7919b> his hands<MH3027>, although<MH3588> Manasseh<MH4519> was the firstborn<MH1060>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/48-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>And he blessed<MH1288> Joseph<MH3130>, and said<MH559>, <p class="indent1stline">“The God<MH430> before<MH6440> whom<MH834> my fathers<MH1> Abraham<MH85> and Isaac<MH3327> walked<MH1980>, <t><p class="indent1">The God<MH430> who has been my shepherd<MH7462a> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>all<MH4480, 5750> my life<MH5750> to this<MH2088> day<MH3117>, <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/48-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>The angel<MH4397> who has redeemed<MH1350> me from all<MH3605> evil<MH7451b>, <t><p class="indent1">Bless<MH1288> the boys<MH5288>; <t><p class="indent1">And may my name<MH8034> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>live<MH7121> on<MH7121> in them, <t><p class="indent1">And the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>names<MH8034> of my fathers<MH1> Abraham<MH85> and Isaac<MH3327>; <t><p class="indent1">And may they grow<MH1711> into a multitude<MH7230> in the midst<MH7130> of the earth<MH776>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/48-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>When Joseph<MH3130> saw<MH7200> that his father<MH1> placed<MH7896> his right<MH3225> hand<MH3027> on Ephraim’s<MH669> head<MH7218>, it displeased<MH7489a> him; and he grasped<MH8551> his father’s<MH1> hand<MH3027> to move<MH5493> it from Ephraim’s<MH669> head<MH7218> to Manasseh’s<MH4519> head<MH7218>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/48-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>And Joseph<MH3130> said<MH559> to his father<MH1>, “Not so<MH3651>, my father<MH1>, for this<MH2088> one<MH2088> is the firstborn<MH1060>. Place<MH7760> your right<MH3225> hand<MH3225> on his head<MH7218>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/48-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>But his father<MH1> refused<MH3985> and said<MH559>, “I know<MH3045>, my son<MH1121>, I know<MH3045>; he also<MH1571> will become<MH1961> a people<MH5971a> and he also<MH1571> will be<MH1431> great<MH1431>.
