I adjure thee by God, not to torment me." <A name="9"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/5-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>(for Jesus had said to him, "come out of the man, thou impure spirit.") <A name="10"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/5-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>and Jesus asked him, what is thy name? my name is legion, answered he: for we are many. <A name="11"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/5-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>and he was very importunate with Jesus not to drive them away from that country. <A name="12"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/5-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>now there was a great herd of swine feeding upon the mountain; <A name="13"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/5-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>and all the demons intreated him, saying, "send us to the swine, that we may enter into them." <A name="14"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/5-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Jesus immediately gave them leave, and the impure spirits quitting the possessed, entred into the swine, and the whole herd, which were about two thousand, ran down a precipice into the sea, and were there stifled.<p> <A name="15"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/5-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>then they that fed the swine fled, and told the news to town and country, and they went out to see what had been done. <A name="16"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/5-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>when they were come to Jesus, and saw him that had been possessed with the legion of demons, sitting in his clothes, and in his right mind, they were afraid. <A name="17"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/5-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>and when the eye-witnesses had related what had pass'd with respect to the demoniack, and to the swine: <A name="18"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/5-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>they intreated him to withdraw from their territories. <A name="19"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/5-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>as he was embarking, the late demoniack desired, that he might be with Jesus. <A name="20"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/5-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>however, Jesus refused him, and said, go home to thy friends, and tell them what great things the Lord hath done for thee, and how he hath had compassion on thee. <A name="21"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/5-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>and he departed, and published in Decapolis, what Jesus had done for him: and all were filled with admiration.<p> <A name="22"></a><p class="hdg">The Healing Touch of Jesus<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/9.htm#18">Matthew 9:18&#8211;26</a>; <a href ="../luke/8.htm#40">Luke 8:40&#8211;56</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/5-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>When Jesus had repassed in the vessel to the other side, a crowd of people gathered about him, while he was nigh the sea. <A name="23"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/5-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>when one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name, came, and as soon as he saw him, fell at his feet, <A name="24"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/5-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>and earnestly intreated him, saying, "my little daughter is at the last extremity, pray come and lay thy hands on her, that she may be healed, and live." <A name="25"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/5-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>so Jesus went with him, attended by a great crowd, that press'd about him.<p> <A name="26"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/5-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>Now there was a woman, who had been affected with an hemorrhage twelve years: <A name="27"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/5-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>having suffered much from several physicians, she had spent all her fortune, and instead of being any thing the better, she rather grew worse. <A name="28"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/5-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>but having heard of Jesus; she came behind him in the crowd, and touched his garment. <A name="29"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/5-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>for said she, if I do but touch his clothes, I shall be cured. <A name="30"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/5-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>and immediately the source of her disorder was dried up: and she sensibly perceived she was healed of that indisposition. <A name="31"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/5-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>Jesus conscious of the influence he had exerted, immediately turned towards the crowd, and said, who touched my clothes? <A name="32"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/5-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>his disciples replied, you see the multitude press about you, and do you ask, who touched you? <A name="33"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/5-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>however, he looked about to see who it was. <A name="34"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/5-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>then the woman, conscious of what had been effected in her, came trembling with fear, and falling down before him, confess'd the whole truth. <A name="35"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/5-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>and he said to her, daughter, thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace, entirely freed from your indisposition.<p> <A name="36"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/5-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>Before he had done speaking, messengers came from the ruler of the synagogue's house, who said, "your daughter is dead, why do you give the master any further trouble?" <A name="37"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/5-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>Jesus, upon hearing that, immediately said to the ruler of the synagogue, "be not afraid, only believe." <A name="38"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/5-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>and he suffered no man to follow him, except Peter, and James, and John the brother of James: <A name="39"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/5-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span>being come to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and seeing a tumultuous crowd of people weeping and howling, <A name="40"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/5-39.htm"><b>39</b></a></span>at his going in he said to them, what's the meaning of this uproar, what do you weep for?
