And Pilate saith unto them, "Behold the man." <A name="7"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>When the chief priests therefore and the officers saw Him, they cried out, saying, "Crucify <i>Him,</i> crucify <i>Him.</i>" Pilate saith unto them, Take Him yourselves, and crucify <i>Him:</i> for I find no fault in Him. <A name="8"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law He ought to die, because He made himself the Son of God.<p> <A name="9"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Now when Pilate heard this he was the more afraid; <A name="10"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>and went into the palace again, and saith to Jesus, From whence art thou? but Jesus gave him no answer. <A name="11"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>Pilate therefore saith unto Him, Dost thou not speak to me? knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee? <A name="12"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Jesus answered, <FR>Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above; wherefore he, that delivered me up to thee, hath the greater sin.<Fr> <A name="13"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Upon this Pilate sought to release Him; but the Jews cried out, saying, If thou release this <i>man,</i> thou art not Cesar's friend; <i>for</i> whosoever maketh himself a king, opposeth Cesar.<p> <A name="14"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Therefore when Pilate heard this he brought Jesus forth, and sat down on the tribunal, in a place called the Pavement, but in Hebrew, Gabbatha. <A name="15"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>(And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour.) And he saith to the Jews, Behold your king. But they cried out, <A name="16"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Away with <i>Him,</i> away with <i>Him,</i> crucify Him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your king? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Cesar.<p> <A name="17"></a><p class="hdg">The Crucifixion<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/27.htm#32">Matthew 27:32&#8211;44</a>; <a href ="../mark/15.htm#21">Mark 15:21&#8211;32</a>; <a href ="../luke/23.htm#26">Luke 23:26&#8211;43</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>Then delivered he Him therefore unto them to be crucified.<p> <A name="18"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>And they took Jesus, and led Him away. And He went out, bearing his cross, into a place called <i>the place</i> of a scull, in Hebrew Golgotha: <A name="19"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>where they crucified Him, and with Him two others, <i>one</i> on each side, and Jesus in the middle. <A name="20"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross: and there was written, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS. <A name="21"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>Many of the Jews therefore read this inscription; for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Hebrew, Greek, <i>and</i> Latin. <A name="22"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>And the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, Write not "The king of the Jews," but that "He said, I am king of the Jews." <A name="23"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>Pilate answered, What I have written, I have written.<p> <A name="24"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>And the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, (and made four parts, to each soldier a part,) and <i>his</i> coat. Now the coat had no seam <i>in it,</i> being woven from the top throughout: <A name="25"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>they said therefore to one another, Let us not cut it, but let us cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, "They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots." These <i>things</i> therefore the soldiers did. <A name="26"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>Now there stood near the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary <i>the wife</i> of Cleopas, and Mary Magdalene. <A name="27"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>Jesus therefore seeing <i>his</i> mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing by, saith to his mother, <FR>Woman, behold thy son:<Fr> <A name="28"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span><i>and</i> then saith to the disciple, <FR>Behold thy mother.<Fr> And from that hour the <i>same</i> disciple took her to his own home.<p> <A name="29"></a><p class="hdg">The Death of Jesus<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/27.htm#45">Matthew 27:45&#8211;56</a>; <a href ="../mark/15.htm#33">Mark 15:33&#8211;41</a>; <a href ="../luke/23.htm#44">Luke 23:44&#8211;49</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>After this Jesus knowing that all <i>things</i> were now finished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, <FR>I thirst.<Fr> <A name="30"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>Now there was set a vessel <i>there</i> full of vinegar: so they filled a spunge with <i>the</i> vinegar, and putting it upon hyssop, held it up to his mouth. <A name="31"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>And when Jesus had received the vinegar, He said, <FR>It is finished.<Fr> And reclining his head, He yielded up the ghost.<p> <A name="32"></a><p class="hdg">Jesus&#8217; Side Is Pierced<p><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>The Jews therefore, that the bodies might not remain upon the cross on the sabbath-<i>day,</i> because it was <i>now</i> the preparation, (for that sabbath-day was an high-<i>day</i>) desired Pilate that their legs might be broken, and <i>that</i> they might be taken away. <A name="33"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>So the soldiers came, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other that was crucified with Him.
