His role was to maintain order and enforce Roman law. Pilate's questioning of Jesus highlights the political tension between Roman authority and Jewish leadership. The Jewish leaders had brought Jesus to Pilate, seeking a death sentence that they could not legally carry out themselves. Pilate's involvement fulfills the prophecy of Jesus being handed over to the Gentiles (<a href="/mark/10-33.htm">Mark 10:33</a>).“Are You the King of the Jews?” This question addresses the charge of treason against Jesus.
