How Disney alters the actions of major and minor characters, and the construction of aging female characters and the key characteristics they exhibit during their fight for eternal youth, beauty, and social and political power will be analyzed, attempting to show how Disney is not a harmless substitute for a babysitter for Disney movies are often criticized for their negative, stereotypical portrayal of female characters that are often unrealistically painted. In the context of Disney movies, the word „woman‟ has become synonymous with „victim‟ in a patriarchal society. The Disney Corporation films such as Cinderella, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty et al are in the list of favorite Disney heroines for young girls for the last fifty years. These movies have certain themes in common—the female protagonist in each of these films is shown as a “Disney Princess” but the traits of these princesses, featured through these films are submissiveness and servitude. Though they possess divine beauty, these princesses only seem to be capable of suffering in silence, and it is because of this, they are finally given the ultimate reward: salvation through the handsome Prince Charming. This negative portrayals of women and girls in Disney movies gain force through the way in which similar messages are consistently circulated and reproduced in varying degrees in many of the Disney movies even till today. The pervasiveness of Disney movies has transformed the pop-culture and cultural landscape of not just the American culture but the rest of the world. The franchise has become a favourite of children all over the world. Inspiring children to desire a life of grandeur, adventure, where dreams become a reality. It reveals itself in generations of children keenly seeking a Prince Charming or wanting to be the price charming, an unrealistic fairy tale relationships and the omnipotent, happily-ever after. The themes revolve around the grandeur of true love, the power of humanity, and the infamous good versus evil with good winning at the end. However, despite being the forerunner of adventure and motivation, Disney is also known for the lack of agency given to its female characters. It has also been criticised for promoting female subservience and subjugation in addition to the glorification of abusive relationships. The paper's investigation of Disney's earlier animations submits that they contribute to the circulation of the normative gender roles that girls should be passive, submissive and weak. In sharp contrast, its modern Disney animations suggest that girls should be strong, energetic, resourceful and they should seek to achieve greatness with hard work. Consequently, with the world now clamouring and fighting for gender equality and equity, Disney no longer writes women's life stories through a male discourse or reinforcing the patriarchal ideals and philosophies towards women with the new movies being released. Consequently, this paper investigates how Walt Disney Animations changes its narrative from the damsel in distress and male saviourism to female strength and agency. Bordieu (2002), when discussing the differentiation between the sexes, points out that the anatomical opposition between the male and female bodies would have been used to justify and naturalize the different social roles attributed to men and women. When we think about history, an inevitable element over time is always present: transformations. The relationships established between the male and the female are no different. These relations were many until the twentieth century and it is at that moment that changes are perceived concerning the roles assigned to both genders. The aim of this work was to analyze the transformations of the feminine and the masculine in the Disney princess films during the 20 th and early 21 st centuries. The methodology used was bibliographic research, with Bourdieu (2002), Chartier (2002) and Castells (2006) being the main references. Beginning with Snow White and the Seven Dwarf in 1937, it now includes Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora, Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, Pocahontas, Mulan, Tiana and Rapunzel. This essay attempts to show how gender identity in the Disney princess animations still conforms to outmoded patriarchal values. To critique the franchise and its ideology, this essay employs Hélène Cixous’s concept of ‘patriarchal binary’ to reveal how often Disney animations simplify and/or disempower the above-mentioned heroines. It examines how the Brothers Grimm and then Disney adapted the fairy tales so to conform better into the patriarchal society of their times and in what ways the Snow White model has persisted in spite of seventy years of rethinking gender roles and models. A total of twenty-four female characters are classified based on their representation, actions, personality traits, appearance, and relationship status. Traditional female figures are beautiful, dependent on male figures, and engage in a heterosexual relationship as part of their 'happily ever after.' The traditional female figures in this study are Cinderella from Cinderella (1950), Lady from Lady and the Tramp (1955), Aurora (Sleeping Beauty) from Sleeping Beauty (1959), and Duchess from The AristoCats (1970). Complex female figures are, in the beginning of a film, independent from male figures, and outspoken, but by the end of a film, they are dependent on male figures and they always end their tale with a man beside them. The study is carried out through an analysis of the themes of the stories with a critical feminist approach in three chronological stages. Previous studies have explored these themes, but no report to date has used a chronological approach to compare the significance of the mentioned themes with the stages of feminism. These stories develop in line with developments in society and widen their perspective when examined through a feminist lens, and this change is also reflected in the Disney treatments of these tales.
