The repetition of "comfort" emphasizes the depth of God's compassion and the certainty of His promise. Historically, this message was directed to the Israelites during their Babylonian exile, a period of great suffering and longing for deliverance. Theologically, it reflects God's enduring covenant with His people, despite their disobedience. This comfort is not just emotional but is rooted in the assurance of God's future actions. The call to comfort is also seen as a foreshadowing of the coming of Jesus Christ, who is the ultimate source of comfort and salvation for humanity, as seen in the New Testament (e.g., <a href="/matthew/11-28.htm">Matthew 11:28-30</a>).<p><b>says your God.</b><br>This phrase reaffirms the personal relationship between God and His people. The possessive "your" indicates a covenantal bond, reminding the Israelites that despite their current circumstances, they remain God's chosen people. This assurance is crucial for a people in exile, as it reinforces their identity and God's faithfulness. The declaration "says your God" underscores the authority and reliability of the message. It connects to other scriptural affirmations of God's promises, such as in <a href="/deuteronomy/7-9.htm">Deuteronomy 7:9</a>, which speaks of God's faithfulness to His covenant. This phrase also points to the prophetic nature of Isaiah's message, as it is God Himself who speaks through the prophet, ensuring that the words are not merely human consolation but divine assurance.<div class="vheading2">Persons / Places / Events</div>1. <b><a href="/topical/i/isaiah.htm">Isaiah</a></b><br>The prophet who conveyed God's messages to the people of Israel. It has a link, as has been noticed, with the earlier collection of his writings in <a href="/context/isaiah/35-9.htm" title="No lion shall be there, nor any ravenous beast shall go up thereon, it shall not be found there; but the redeemed shall walk there:">Isaiah 35:9-10</a>. The prophet's mind is obviously projected at the outset into the future, which it had been given him to see, when the time of punishment and discipline was to be succeeded, having done its work, by blessedness and peace. The key-note is struck in the opening words. The phrase "my people" is a distinct echo of Hos. ii. 1. <span class= "ital">Lo Ammi </span>(<span class= "ital">i.e. </span>"not my people,") has been brought back to his true position as <span class= "ital">Ammi </span>(<span class= "ital">i.e. </span>"my people").<p><span class= "bld">Saith your God.</span>--Noticeable as a formula which is at once peculiar to Isaiah and common to both his volumes (<a href="/isaiah/1-11.htm" title="To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices to me? said the LORD: I am full of the burnt offerings of rams, and the fat of fed beasts; and I delight not in the blood of bullocks, or of lambs, or of he goats.">Isaiah 1:11</a>; <a href="/isaiah/1-18.htm" title="Come now, and let us reason together, said the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.">Isaiah 1:18</a>; <a href="/isaiah/33-10.htm" title="Now will I rise, said the LORD; now will I be exalted; now will I lift up myself.">Isaiah 33:10</a>; <a href="/isaiah/41-21.htm" title="Produce your cause, said the LORD; bring forth your strong reasons, said the King of Jacob.">Isaiah 41:21</a>; <a href="/isaiah/66-9.htm" title="Shall I bring to the birth, and not cause to bring forth? said the LORD: shall I cause to bring forth, and shut the womb? said your God.">Isaiah 66:9</a>). . . . <div class="vheading2"><a href="/commentaries/pulpit/isaiah/40.htm">Pulpit Commentary</a></div><span class="cmt_sub_title">Verse 1.</span> - <span class="cmt_word">Comfort ye, comfort ye my people</span>. The key-note is struck at once. With that iteration which is his favourite mode of emphasizing what is important (see the comment on Isaiah 38:11), the prophet declares that he and his brethren have a direct mission from God to "comfort" Israel. Note the encouragement contained in the expressions, "my people," and "your God." Israel is not cast off, even when most deeply afflicted. <span class="p"><br /><br /></span><span class="versiontext"><a href="/commentaries/isaiah/40-1.htm">Parallel Commentaries ...</a></span><span class="p"><br /><br /><br /></span><a name="lexicon" id="lexicon"></a><div class="vheading">Hebrew</div><span class="word">&#8220;Comfort,</span><br /><span class="heb">&#1504;&#1463;&#1495;&#1458;&#1502;&#1445;&#1493;&#1468;</span> <span class="translit">(na&#183;&#7717;a&#774;&#183;m&#363;)</span><br /><span class="parse">Verb - Piel - Imperative - masculine plural<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_5162.htm">Strong's 5162: </a> </span><span class="str2">To sigh, breathe strongly, to be sorry, to pity, console, rue, to avenge</span><br /><br /><span class="word">comfort</span><br /><span class="heb">&#1504;&#1463;&#1495;&#1458;&#1502;&#1430;&#1493;&#1468;</span> <span class="translit">(na&#183;&#7717;a&#774;&#183;m&#363;)</span><br /><span class="parse">Verb - Piel - Imperative - masculine plural<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_5162.htm">Strong's 5162: </a> </span><span class="str2">To sigh, breathe strongly, to be sorry, to pity, console, rue, to avenge</span><br /><br /><span class="word">My people,&#8221;</span><br /><span class="heb">&#1506;&#1463;&#1502;&#1468;&#1460;&#1425;&#1497;</span> <span class="translit">(&#8216;am&#183;m&#238;)</span><br /><span class="parse">Noun - masculine singular construct &#124; first person common singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_5971.htm">Strong's 5971: </a> </span><span class="str2">A people, a tribe, troops, attendants, a flock</span><br /><br /><span class="word">says</span><br /><span class="heb">&#1497;&#1465;&#1488;&#1502;&#1463;&#1430;&#1512;</span> <span class="translit">(y&#333;&#183;mar)</span><br /><span class="parse">Verb - Qal - Imperfect - third person masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_559.htm">Strong's 559: </a> </span><span class="str2">To utter, say</span><br /><br /><span class="word">your God.</span><br /><span class="heb">&#1488;&#1457;&#1500;&#1465;&#1492;&#1461;&#1497;&#1499;&#1462;&#1469;&#1501;&#1475;</span> <span class="translit">(&#8217;&#277;&#183;l&#333;&#183;h&#234;&#183;&#7733;em)</span><br /><span class="parse">Noun - masculine plural construct &#124; second person masculine plural<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_430.htm">Strong's 430: </a> </span><span class="str2">gods -- the supreme God, magistrates, a superlative</span><br /><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><div class="vheading">Links</div><a href="/niv/isaiah/40-1.htm">Isaiah 40:1 NIV</a><br /><a href="/nlt/isaiah/40-1.htm">Isaiah 40:1 NLT</a><br /><a href="/esv/isaiah/40-1.htm">Isaiah 40:1 ESV</a><br /><a href="/nasb/isaiah/40-1.htm">Isaiah 40:1 NASB</a><br /><a href="/kjv/isaiah/40-1.htm">Isaiah 40:1 KJV</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="//bibleapps.com/isaiah/40-1.htm">Isaiah 40:1 BibleApps.com</a><br /><a href="//bibliaparalela.com/isaiah/40-1.htm">Isaiah 40:1 Biblia Paralela</a><br /><a href="//holybible.com.cn/isaiah/40-1.htm">Isaiah 40:1 Chinese Bible</a><br /><a href="//saintebible.com/isaiah/40-1.htm">Isaiah 40:1 French Bible</a><br /><a href="/catholic/isaiah/40-1.htm">Isaiah 40:1 Catholic Bible</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="/isaiah/40-1.htm">OT Prophets: Isaiah 40:1 Comfort comfort my people says your God (Isa Isi Is)</a></div></div></td></tr></table></div><div id="left"><a href="/isaiah/39-8.htm" onmouseover='lft.src="/leftgif.png"' onmouseout='lft.src="/left.png"' title="Isaiah 39:8"><img src="/left.png" name="lft" border="0" alt="Isaiah 39:8" /></a></div><div id="right"><a href="/isaiah/40-2.htm" onmouseover='rght.src="/rightgif.png"' onmouseout='rght.src="/right.png"' title="Isaiah 40:2"><img src="/right.png" name="rght" border="0" alt="Isaiah 40:2" /></a></div><div id="botleft"><a href="#" onmouseover='botleft.src="/botleftgif.png"' onmouseout='botleft.src="/botleft.png"' title="Top of Page"><img src="/botleft.png" name="botleft" border="0" alt="Top of Page" /></a></div><div id="botright"><a href="#" onmouseover='botright.src="/botrightgif.png"' onmouseout='botright.src="/botright.png"' title="Top of Page"><img src="/botright.png" name="botright" border="0" alt="Top of Page" /></a></div><div id="bot"><iframe width="100%" height="1500" scrolling="no" src="/botmenubhnew2.htm" frameborder="0"></iframe></div></td></tr></table></div></body></html>
