The Hebrew word "אִי" (i) and the Greek word "νήσος" (nēsos) are commonly translated as "island" or "coastland" in the Bible. These terms are used both literally and metaphorically throughout the Scriptures.

Geographical References

Islands are mentioned in various contexts in the Bible, often symbolizing distant or remote places. In the Old Testament, the prophet Isaiah frequently refers to islands and coastlands as regions that will witness God's glory and judgment. For example, Isaiah 42:10 states, "Sing to the LORD a new song, His praise from the ends of the earth, you who go down to the sea, and all that is in it, you islands, and all who dwell in them."

The New Testament also references islands, particularly in the context of the Apostle Paul's missionary journeys. In Acts 27:26 , during Paul's voyage to Rome, it is mentioned, "However, we must run aground on some island." This refers to the island of Malta, where Paul and his companions were shipwrecked.

Symbolic and Prophetic Significance

Islands in the Bible often symbolize isolation, remoteness, or the far reaches of the earth. They are sometimes depicted as places awaiting the revelation of God's power and salvation. Isaiah 49:1 calls out, "Listen to Me, O islands, pay attention, you peoples from afar. The LORD called Me from the womb; from the body of My mother He named Me."

In prophetic literature, islands are sometimes associated with the eschatological hope of the nations turning to God. Isaiah 60:9 proclaims, "Surely the islands will wait for Me, and the ships of Tarshish will come first, to bring your children from afar, with their silver and gold, to the honor of the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, for He has glorified you."

Cultural and Historical Context

In the ancient Near East, islands and coastlands were often seen as mysterious and exotic, representing the unknown parts of the world. They were places of trade and cultural exchange, as well as potential threats from foreign powers. The biblical narrative sometimes uses islands to illustrate the vastness of God's dominion and the reach of His covenant promises.

Theological Implications

The mention of islands in the Bible underscores the universality of God's message and His sovereignty over all creation. It highlights the inclusivity of the Gospel, extending to the "ends of the earth" and encompassing all peoples, regardless of their geographical location. The prophetic vision of islands turning to God serves as a reminder of the ultimate fulfillment of God's redemptive plan for humanity.

Conclusion

While the Bible does not provide detailed descriptions of specific islands, the references to islands and coastlands serve as powerful symbols of God's expansive reach and the global scope of His salvation. Through these references, the Scriptures convey a message of hope and divine purpose that transcends geographical boundaries.
Easton's Bible Dictionary
(Hebrews `i, "dry land, " as opposed to water) occurs in its usual signification (Isaiah 42:4, 10, 12, 15, Comp. Jeremiah 47:4), but more frequently simply denotes a maritime region or sea-coast (Isaiah 20:6, R.V., " coastland;23:2, 6; Jeremiah 2:10; Ezek. 27:6, 7). The Jews were not a maritime people, and in early times their geographical knowledge was very limited. In the New Testament, besides the passages noted above, and Patmos (Revelation 1:9), various islands are mentioned by name in connection with the voyages of Paul, e.g. Cyprus, Crete, Lesbos, Samos, Samothrace, Chios, Melita, Sicily (Syracuse, Acts 28:12).
