The concept of islands appears in various contexts throughout the Bible, symbolizing both physical locations and metaphorical ideas. The Hebrew word often translated as "isle" is "אי" (i), and in Greek, it is "νήσος" (nēsos).

Old Testament References

In the Old Testament, the term "isles" is frequently used to refer to distant lands or coastlands, often in the context of prophecy and divine judgment. For instance, in Isaiah 42:10, the prophet calls for praise from the "ends of the earth" and includes the "islands" in this call: "Sing to the LORD a new song, His praise from the ends of the earth, you who go down to the sea, and all that is in it, you islands, and all who dwell in them."

The isles are sometimes depicted as places that will witness God's glory and power. Isaiah 66:19 speaks of God's intention to send messengers to the distant lands, including the "islands afar off," to declare His glory among the nations.

New Testament References

In the New Testament, the Apostle Paul’s missionary journeys include visits to several islands. One notable instance is his shipwreck on the island of Malta, as recorded in Acts 28:1: "Once we were safely ashore, we learned that the island was called Malta." This event led to the spread of the Gospel among the island's inhabitants, demonstrating the reach of the early Christian mission.

The Book of Revelation also mentions islands in the context of eschatological events. Revelation 6:14 describes a scene of cosmic upheaval: "The sky receded like a scroll being rolled up, and every mountain and island was moved from its place." This imagery underscores the totality of God's judgment and the transformation of creation.

Symbolic and Theological Significance

Islands in the Bible often symbolize remoteness and separation, yet they are also depicted as places that will ultimately be reached by God's message and power. The inclusion of islands in prophetic visions and missionary journeys highlights the universality of God's plan for salvation and judgment.

Theologically, the mention of islands serves as a reminder of God's sovereignty over all creation, including the most distant and isolated places. It reflects the biblical theme that no part of the earth is beyond God's reach or concern.

Cultural and Historical Context

In the ancient Near Eastern context, islands were often seen as mysterious and distant lands. They were places of trade and cultural exchange, as well as potential threats due to their association with seafaring peoples. The biblical references to islands may have resonated with the Israelites' understanding of the world as a place filled with diverse peoples and lands, all under the dominion of the one true God.

Overall, the concept of "isle" in the Bible serves as a multifaceted symbol, representing both physical locations and the broader reach of God's redemptive work across the earth.
Smith's Bible Dictionary
Isle
The radical sense of the Hebrew word seems to be "habitable places," as opposed to water, and in this sense it occurs in (Isaiah 42:15) Hence it means secondarily any maritime district, whether belonging to a continent or to an island; thus it is used of the shore of the Mediterranean, (Isaiah 20:6; 23:2,6) and of the coasts of Elishah, (Ezekiel 27:7) i.e. of Greece and Asia Minor.
Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary
1.
