In the Old Testament, "The Lord" often translates the Hebrew name YHWH (Yahweh), which is considered the most sacred name of God, revealed to Moses at the burning bush (<a href="/exodus/3-14.htm">Exodus 3:14-15</a>). This name signifies God's eternal existence and His covenantal faithfulness to Israel. In the Berean Standard Bible, "The Lord" is used to convey the reverence and majesty associated with God's name. Attributes of The Lord The Lord is depicted as omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent. He is the Creator of the heavens and the earth, as stated in <a href="/genesis/1.htm">Genesis 1:1</a>, "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." His power and majesty are further emphasized in <a href="/psalms/24.htm">Psalm 24:1</a>, "The earth is the LORD’s, and the fullness thereof, the world and all who dwell therein." The Lord is also characterized by His holiness and righteousness. <a href="/isaiah/6-3.htm">Isaiah 6:3</a> declares, "Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of Hosts; all the earth is full of His glory." His righteousness is a foundation of His throne, as expressed in <a href="/psalms/89-14.htm">Psalm 89:14</a>, "Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne; loving devotion and truth go before You." The Lord as Redeemer and Savior Throughout the Bible, The Lord is portrayed as the Redeemer and Savior of His people. In the Old Testament, He delivers Israel from bondage in Egypt, as recounted in <a href="/exodus/6-6.htm">Exodus 6:6</a>, "Therefore tell the Israelites: I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians." This act of deliverance is a foreshadowing of the ultimate redemption through Jesus Christ in the New Testament. In the New Testament, Jesus is identified as The Lord, affirming His divinity and role in salvation. <a href="/philippians/2-11.htm">Philippians 2:11</a> states, "and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father." This confession acknowledges Jesus as the incarnate Lord who fulfills the promises of the Old Testament. The Lord's Covenant Relationship The Lord establishes covenants with His people, demonstrating His commitment and love. The Abrahamic Covenant (<a href="/genesis/12.htm">Genesis 12:1-3</a>), the Mosaic Covenant (Exodus 19-24), and the Davidic Covenant (<a href="/2_samuel/7-12.htm">2 Samuel 7:12-16</a>) are key examples of His covenantal dealings. These covenants reveal The Lord's plan for redemption and His desire for a relationship with humanity. In the New Testament, the New Covenant is inaugurated through Jesus Christ, as described in <a href="/hebrews/8-10.htm">Hebrews 8:10</a>, "This is the covenant I will establish with the people of Israel after that time, declares the Lord. I will put My laws in their minds and inscribe them on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they will be My people." The Lord's Role in Worship and Prayer The Lord is the object of worship and prayer throughout the Scriptures. Worship is directed to Him alone, as commanded in <a href="/deuteronomy/6-13.htm">Deuteronomy 6:13</a>, "Fear the LORD your God, serve Him only, and take your oaths in His name." The Psalms are replete with calls to worship The Lord for His greatness and goodness, such as in <a href="/psalms/95-6.htm">Psalm 95:6</a>, "Come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the LORD our Maker." Prayer is a means of communication with The Lord, who hears and responds to the cries of His people. Jesus taught His disciples to pray to The Lord in the Lord's Prayer, beginning with "Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name" (<a href="/matthew/6-9.htm">Matthew 6:9</a>). The Lord's Justice and Mercy The Lord is just and merciful, balancing His righteous judgment with compassion. <a href="/psalms/103-8.htm">Psalm 103:8-10</a> describes His mercy, "The LORD is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in loving devotion. He will not always accuse, nor will He harbor His anger forever; He does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities." His justice is evident in His dealings with nations and individuals, holding them accountable for their actions. Yet, His mercy offers forgiveness and restoration to those who repent and turn to Him, as seen in <a href="/2_chronicles/7-14.htm">2 Chronicles 7:14</a>, "if My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, forgive their sin, and heal their land." The Lord's Eternal Reign The Lord's reign is eternal, transcending time and history. <a href="/revelation/11-15.htm">Revelation 11:15</a> proclaims, "The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ, and He will reign forever and ever." This eternal reign assures believers of The Lord's ultimate victory over evil and the establishment of His everlasting kingdom.<a name="isb" id="isb"></a><div class="vheading2">International Standard Bible Encyclopedia</div>The LordLORD; THE LORDThe Aramaic designation, Mare', occurs only in Daniel (e.g. 2:47; 5:23), and the same word refers to a man (4:24). Of the Greek words, Kurios is freely used of both the Deity and men. Despotes, of men in classic usage, occurs only of God, including the ascended Jesus, and is employed only 5 times. Megistanes (plural) is found once, of men (<a href="/mark/6-21.htm">Mark 6:21</a>). Rabboni (Hebrew in Greek letters) is applied only to the Christ, and is simply transliterated in the Revised Version (British and American), but rendered "Lord" in the King James Version (compare <a href="/mark/10-51.htm">Mark 10:51</a>). Our English versions distinguish the 3 main uses of the term thus: (1) "LORD" represents the Hebrew Yahweh, Septuagint Kurios, except where 'Adhonay or 'Adhon is combined with Yahweh (= "Lord God"); the American Standard Revised Version has in these examples employed the name as it is found in the Hebrew, simply transliterated. (2) "Lord" corresponds to 'Adhonay, 'Adhon, Mare', also Greek Kurios (see (1)), and Despotes, for which the American Standard Revised Version has always "Master" in either the text or the margin. (3) "Lord" ("lord") translates all the remaining 8 Hebrew words and the Greek words except Despotes. It is thus seen that Kurios corresponds to all three forms of writing the English term.
