Throughout the preceding chapters, Job has been in dialogue with his friends, who have offered various explanations for his suffering. This divine response signifies a shift from human reasoning to divine revelation. The use of "LORD" in all caps indicates the Hebrew name Yahweh, emphasizing God's covenantal relationship with His people. This moment underscores the personal nature of God, who is not distant but actively engages with His creation. It also highlights the theme of divine sovereignty, as God chooses the timing and manner of His response.<p><b>out of the whirlwind</b><br>The whirlwind, or storm, is a powerful symbol of God's majesty and might. In the ancient Near Eastern context, storms were often associated with divine presence and power. This imagery is consistent with other biblical accounts where God reveals Himself through natural phenomena, such as the burning bush in <a href="/exodus/3.htm">Exodus 3</a> or the fire and smoke on Mount Sinai in <a href="/exodus/19.htm">Exodus 19</a>. The whirlwind signifies both the awe-inspiring and uncontrollable nature of God, reminding Job and the readers of God's ultimate authority over creation. It also serves as a reminder of the limitations of human understanding when faced with the divine.<p><b>and said:</b><br>The fact that God speaks directly to Job is significant. In the biblical narrative, divine speech often conveys authority and truth. God's words are not merely for Job's benefit but serve as a revelation for all readers of the text. This moment is a reminder of the power of God's word, which is creative, sustaining, and transformative. It also sets the stage for the subsequent chapters, where God will challenge Job's understanding of justice, creation, and divine wisdom. This divine discourse invites readers to reflect on their own perceptions of God and the nature of suffering.<div class="vheading2">Persons / Places / Events</div>1. <b><a href="/topical/t/the_lord.htm">The LORD (Yahweh)</a></b><br>The covenant name of God, emphasizing His eternal, self-existent nature and His relationship with His people. Unless all was to remain hopelessly uncertain and dark, there could be no solution of the questions so fiercely and obstinately debated but by the intervention of Him whose government was the matter in dispute. And so the Lord answered Job out of <span class= "ital">the </span>whirlwind, or tempest: that is to say, the tempest which had been long gathering, and which had been the subject of Elihu's remarks. The one argument which is developed in the remaining chapters is drawn from man's ignorance. There is so much in nature that man knows not and cannot understand, that it is absurd for him to suppose that he can judge aright in matters touching God's moral government of the world. Though Job is afterwards (<a href="/job/42-8.htm" title="Therefore take to you now seven bullocks and seven rams, and go to my servant Job, and offer up for yourselves a burnt offering; and my servant Job shall pray for you: for him will I accept: lest I deal with you after your folly, in that you have not spoken of me the thing which is right, like my servant Job.">Job 42:8</a>) justified by God, yet the tone of all that God says to him is more or less mingled with reproach.<p><div class="vheading2"><a href="/commentaries/pulpit/job/38.htm">Pulpit Commentary</a></div><span class="cmt_sub_title">Verse 1.</span> - <span class="cmt_word">Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind</span>. It is remarked, with reason, that the special mention of Job as the person answered "implies that another speaker had intervened" (Wordsworth); while the attachment of the article to the word "whirlwind" implies some previous mention of that phenomenon, which is only to be found in the discourse of Elihu (<a href="/job/37-9.htm">Job 37:9</a>). Both points have an important bearing on the genuineness of the disputed section, ch. 32- 37. <span class="cmt_word">And said</span>. The question whether there was an objective utterance of human words out of the whirlwind, or only a subjective impression of the thoughts recorded on the minds of those present, is unimportant. In any case, there was a revelation direct from God, which furnished an authoritative solution of the questions debated to all who had been engaged in the debate. <span class="p"><br /><br /></span><span class="versiontext"><a href="/commentaries/job/38-1.htm">Parallel Commentaries ...</a></span><span class="p"><br /><br /><br /></span><a name="lexicon" id="lexicon"></a><div class="vheading">Hebrew</div><span class="word">Then the LORD</span><br /><span class="heb">&#1497;&#1456;&#1492;&#1493;&#1464;&#1443;&#1492;</span> <span class="translit">(Yah&#183;weh)</span><br /><span class="parse">Noun - proper - masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_3068.htm">Strong's 3068: </a> </span><span class="str2">LORD -- the proper name of the God of Israel</span><br /><br /><span class="word">answered</span><br /><span class="heb">&#1493;&#1463;&#1497;&#1468;&#1463;&#1469;&#1506;&#1463;&#1503;&#1470;</span> <span class="translit">(way&#183;ya&#183;&#8216;an-)</span><br /><span class="parse">Conjunctive waw &#124; Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_6030.htm">Strong's 6030: </a> </span><span class="str2">To answer, respond</span><br /><br /><span class="word">Job</span><br /><span class="heb">&#1488;&#1460;&#1453;&#1497;&#1468;&#1493;&#1465;&#1489;</span> <span class="translit">(&#8217;&#238;&#183;y&#333;&#183;w&#7687;)</span><br /><span class="parse">Noun - proper - masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_347.htm">Strong's 347: </a> </span><span class="str2">Job -- a patriarch</span><br /><br /><span class="word">out of</span><br /><span class="heb">&#1502;&#1460;&#1445;&#1503; &#1472;</span> <span class="translit">(min)</span><br /><span class="parse">Preposition<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_4480.htm">Strong's 4480: </a> </span><span class="str2">A part of, from, out of</span><br /><br /><span class="word">the whirlwind</span><br /><span class="heb">&#1492;&#1463;&#1505;&#1468;&#1456;&#1506;&#1464;&#1512;&#1464;&#1431;&#1492;</span> <span class="translit">(has&#183;s&#601;&#183;&#8216;&#257;&#183;r&#257;h)</span><br /><span class="parse">Article &#124; Noun - feminine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_5591.htm">Strong's 5591: </a> </span><span class="str2">A hurricane</span><br /><br /><span class="word">and said:</span><br /><span class="heb">&#1493;&#1463;&#1497;&#1468;&#1465;&#1488;&#1502;&#1463;&#1469;&#1512;&#1475;</span> <span class="translit">(way&#183;y&#333;&#183;mar)</span><br /><span class="parse">Conjunctive waw &#124; Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_559.htm">Strong's 559: </a> </span><span class="str2">To utter, say</span><br /><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><div class="vheading">Links</div><a href="/niv/job/38-1.htm">Job 38:1 NIV</a><br /><a href="/nlt/job/38-1.htm">Job 38:1 NLT</a><br /><a href="/esv/job/38-1.htm">Job 38:1 ESV</a><br /><a href="/nasb/job/38-1.htm">Job 38:1 NASB</a><br /><a href="/kjv/job/38-1.htm">Job 38:1 KJV</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="//bibleapps.com/job/38-1.htm">Job 38:1 BibleApps.com</a><br /><a href="//bibliaparalela.com/job/38-1.htm">Job 38:1 Biblia Paralela</a><br /><a href="//holybible.com.cn/job/38-1.htm">Job 38:1 Chinese Bible</a><br /><a href="//saintebible.com/job/38-1.htm">Job 38:1 French Bible</a><br /><a href="/catholic/job/38-1.htm">Job 38:1 Catholic Bible</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="/job/38-1.htm">OT Poetry: Job 38:1 Then Yahweh answered Job out (Jb) </a></div></div></td></tr></table></div><div id="left"><a href="/job/37-24.htm" onmouseover='lft.src="/leftgif.png"' onmouseout='lft.src="/left.png"' title="Job 37:24"><img src="/left.png" name="lft" border="0" alt="Job 37:24" /></a></div><div id="right"><a href="/job/38-2.htm" onmouseover='rght.src="/rightgif.png"' onmouseout='rght.src="/right.png"' title="Job 38:2"><img src="/right.png" name="rght" border="0" alt="Job 38:2" /></a></div><div id="botleft"><a href="#" onmouseover='botleft.src="/botleftgif.png"' onmouseout='botleft.src="/botleft.png"' title="Top of Page"><img src="/botleft.png" name="botleft" border="0" alt="Top of Page" /></a></div><div id="botright"><a href="#" onmouseover='botright.src="/botrightgif.png"' onmouseout='botright.src="/botright.png"' title="Top of Page"><img src="/botright.png" name="botright" border="0" alt="Top of Page" /></a></div><div id="bot"><iframe width="100%" height="1500" scrolling="no" src="/botmenubhnew2.htm" frameborder="0"></iframe></div></td></tr></table></div></body></html>
