He hailed from the tribe of Issachar and came to power by overthrowing King Nadab, the son of Jeroboam, during a military campaign against the Philistine city of Gibbethon. Baasa's rise to the throne was marked by violence and bloodshed, as he not only killed Nadab but also exterminated the entire house of Jeroboam, fulfilling the prophecy of Ahijah the Shilonite (1 Kings 15:27-29).

Baasa's reign lasted for 24 years, during which he continued the idolatrous practices initiated by Jeroboam. He led Israel in sin by maintaining the worship of the golden calves at Bethel and Dan, which Jeroboam had established to prevent the Israelites from going to Jerusalem to worship (1 Kings 15:34). Despite his military prowess and political acumen, Baasa's reign was characterized by spiritual apostasy and moral decline.

The prophet Jehu, son of Hanani, delivered a message from the LORD to Baasa, condemning him for walking in the ways of Jeroboam and leading Israel into sin. The LORD declared that Baasa's house would suffer the same fate as Jeroboam's, with his lineage being cut off and his family being consumed by dogs and birds (1 Kings 16:1-4). This prophecy underscored the divine judgment against Baasa's unfaithfulness and idolatry.

Baasa's political maneuvers included fortifying the city of Ramah to control access to Jerusalem and prevent his subjects from defecting to the southern kingdom of Judah. This strategic move prompted Asa, king of Judah, to seek an alliance with Ben-Hadad, king of Aram, to counter Baasa's aggression. Asa's alliance with Ben-Hadad resulted in the Aramean forces attacking Baasa's northern territories, forcing him to abandon his fortification efforts at Ramah (1 Kings 15:16-22).

Baasa's death marked the end of his dynasty, as his son Elah succeeded him but reigned for only two years before being assassinated by Zimri, one of his own officials. This fulfilled the prophetic word spoken by Jehu, as Baasa's entire household was eventually destroyed (1 Kings 16:8-13).

Baasa's legacy is a cautionary tale of the consequences of idolatry and disobedience to God's commandments. His reign serves as a reminder of the importance of faithfulness to the LORD and the dangers of leading others astray through false worship and moral compromise.
Library

In his Room Abiud his Son Held the Kingdom at Jerusalem for Six ...
... of the government.
