the Virtavia B-47E, previously payware for XP11. Virtavia have generously given permission for the model to be updated and released for XP12 as freeware. </p> <p> <br /> <strong>The Original Aircraft</strong> </p> <p> <br /> The Boeing B-47 was an important milestone in aviation history – the world’s first swept wing jet bomber. Development work started in 1943, with the design being radically altered in 1945 as the result of Boeing gaining access to German WW2 swept wing research. First flight was in December 1947.<br /> It employed six J- 47 jet engines in pods below the wings, which was novel for the time as was the thin, flexible, laminar flow wing together with complex lift devices to increase lift for landing and take-off. All those features were innovations at the time.<br /> The tandem undercarriage allowed a long, uninterrupted bomb bay around the centre of gravity, which was successfully applied to the later B-52. <br /> Huge internal fuel capacity could be supplemented by air to air refuelling to allow intercontinental range of operation. <br /> The B-47 could be operated with a crew of 3, half that of the previous generation of bombers, making use of what was at the time all new electronic navigation equipment.<br /> The B-47 was initially developed and used as a nuclear bomber. With the arrival of the B-52, its role migrated to reconnaissance – with a fleet of RB-47 aircraft equipped for a variety of roles including photography and jamming.<br /> All swept wing jet aircraft owe a debt of gratitude to the pioneering features of the B-47. It did have limitations, but the lessons learned from its operation were applied to subsequent aircraft such as the military Boeing B-52 and civilian 707, itself a milestone in the development of the airliners of today. </p> <p> <br /> <strong>Background to the model</strong> </p> <p> <br /> This update came about as the result of a request from vi66sopot at X-Plane.org to the original developer, Virtavia to make their payware model for XP11 available for XP12 as freeware. Virtavia gave consent on the condition that “seasoned” XP freeware developers made the changes for XP12. The developer initially approached was Alpeggio, who invited danhopgood1. Troopie subsequently provided assistance with plugins. </p> <p> <strong>Features</strong><br /> Considerable improvements have been made as follows:<br /> • All new flight model with scratch-built airfoils using the original archived wing airfoil data as published by Boeing.<br /> • Wing flex added.<br /> • All new Fmod sounds produced that include separate engine sound recordings for front, side and rear.<br /> • Weapons added.<br /> • Separate brake and approach parachutes now included.<br /> • Improvements to cockpit textures.<br /> • TACAN navigation added including cockpit manipulators.<br /> • Navigation and Comm radios added.<br /> • Texture Improvements.<br /> • KC-97 air to air refuelling tanker added – including animation and sound.<br /> • Second livery of the Strategic Air Command, with an aged finish as opposed to the polished metallic finish of the default livery. </p> <p> <br /> The changes made by Alpeggio comprise the KC-97 3d model, textures and weapons. the Stratojet in FS9 from Alphasim which was bought out or taken over by Virtavia way back then.<br /> Then in XP11, I again obtained the Stratojet but was not really happy with the handling characteristics in XP11.<br /> Now here in XP12 I've again acquired the Stratojet & took her for my first hop. <br /> That's were the speechless part comes in. I don't know what improvements you've made to the handling characteristics or airfoils or whatever, I've just got to say you've done an outstanding job.<br /> Thank You for all your time an effort in putting this project together. </p> <p> Virtavia should look into your talents. </p> <p> I do have 1 complaint though: WHICH PLANE DO I USE NOW? The B-47, the F-86, the Stirling, the Blenheim. I can't make up my mind. Using that, plus real world data for everything else resulted in the model flying nicely and "by the numbers" straight off. Thanks. A pop up GPS for the EO in the back would be nice to help long range navigation with but otherwise it all worked beautifully. Even converted a few old paints for it not that there were many around anyway. It loads ok, but when the loading process finishes and it tries to open the flight window, it crashes immediately. The log gives no info on the cause, probably indicating that this crash was captured by the OS. </p> <p> But the bomber version loads and flies just fine. What a beast ! Streamilined and heavy makes for long takeoff runs and landing apporaches. I like the challenge. </p> <p> B-47e log is attached. It looks like there might have been a drm (?) issue before it crashed. </p> <p> The plugin is all XLUA so there shiould be no issue with mseries mac execution. To keep the file size down, I used one aircraft folder for both versions. The Fmod is shared, so you can't use one version in AI and another as a piloted aircraft. This XP model is of the slightly later "E", which had more power and thus used either no JATO and a long runway, or external JATO bottles fixed in a horseshoe cradle arrangement, with the whole lot falling away after take-off.
